It occurred to me today, as I combed detangler through my baby's hair...as I impossibly tried not to hurt her while I combed and blow dried it...as I damn near stopped before I was properly finished because I could barely stand the thought that I was making tears flow out of her sweet little eyes...

That sisters gotta be WAY tougher than every other group's women... JUST to keep the damn babies hair done and presentable.

Man I'm round here reaching for a drink tripping like damn. Sisters been doing this forever and no other race of people has to deal with hurting their children on a regular basis as a part of their beauty regimen. Hell, basic upkeep.

My old lady and mama laugh and call me everything but a pussy every time I do this. I'll take that. Maybe I am, but its my baby girl. So fuck yall lol.

Hats off to our women. No other creature like them on this earth.

Respect OP. I got 2 girls. I have my differences w/ their mothers but I appreciate and respect them to the utmost. There's nothing i wouldn't do. Sometimes that gets taken advantage of & sometimes causes problems for new 'girlfriends', but i don't care. I live my life on call for them. Period.

you should massage her head with some aloe vera and detangle it with your fingers first..

I love natural hair and doing that for my ladies..

they love it too and are very very thankful...

yes to the lawd they are thankful!!

dont have a daughter or children but if I did,

I would invest in natural hair products...

like that hair milk from carols daughters...

or the 99 to 100 percent clear aloe gel...

no pink lotion shit over here....

Comb from the bottom up, holding her hair firmly with your hand so the tension is from on the hair being held and not pulling directly from her scalp.
yeah, I do this one. Just inevitably there's the times where I'm not holding it firmly enough, or when the firm hold itself is pulling. I do okay but there's SO MUCH HAIR. It's insane. So im bound to have a painful swipe out of every ten.

I told her after that I hate doing it because it hurts her, she grabbed my hand and said "its okay Daddy." Man you could have poured me in a cup.

I also have some books I'll upload for you later. There might be some kids hair care sites listed in SOL from past discussions.
that's what's up, thanks a bunch.

I only really go through this when it's time to get re braided. I have to take it down, shampoo it, blow dry it. We don't perm her hair and she's tender headed so we really can even only do a soft press for now. I think I'ma start letting them shampoo her at the salon. I can't take it lol

Depending on her texture and the look you are going for, you don't need to blow her hair dry. Even really kinky hair will tend to straighten on its own when it is styled.

My one niece had really long, super thick hair. It was down to her waist when she was little and I was the only one who could do it without causing her pain. I was "tender headed" myself growing up, so I didn't want to make her hate getting her hair done.

I'd wash it normally and then condition it, and detangle it with a wide tooth comb with the conditioner in it. (they have a wet brush now, but it still has to be used with LOTS of conditioner) then I'd part it how I was going to style it, and loosely braid it. I'd rinse her hair with the braids still in, making sure to get her scalp really well. You should be able to get the conditioner out the rest of it OK also, but if you don't it's not going to hurt the hair anyway.

Then I'd take the braids out, one at a time, and style it. I didn't have to put her through the pain (or me the time) of being detangled twice. Though with lots of conditioner, it's not a bad experience. I'd grease or oil her scalp also coating her hair a bit. (when it's wet you use less and it doesn't dry with a greasy feel later. Also styling products on wet hair, even if it's only coconut oil and/or leave in, tends to act as a setting lotion helping set the texture if you are going for a smoother/straighter look.) Let it air dry (best) or put her under the dryer hood if it's too cold in the winter. Then redo it later or the next day. When you do this if you put the hair in a ponytail holder at the roots, the pulling of the hair and drying like that straightens it naturally. Normally I'd put it in 3-7 sections, secure at the roots, twist it, like two strand twists, so it would dry less crinkly than braiding, and secure the ends. If her edges are too short to lie flat, you can always do a french braid/corn row along her edges after it dries when you go to redo it. Some people use gel for edges but I hate gel. Part her hair slightly different ever so often so it doesn't get trained to where she has permanent parts.

You want to make it as good an experience as possible so she doesn't hate her hair or think she has bad hair. When my niece moved away, they couldn't take care of it and relaxed it to make it easier. I was so pissed. SMH. She's grown now, but her hair has never been the same since. She finally stopped relaxing it but she flat irons it to within an inch of its life. She won't use a heat protectant or lower heat and I can literally smell burnt hair. I even tried appealing to her vanity: I said if a guy moves in close to see how you smell, do you really want the fragrance he comes back with to be burnt hair? Heffa STILL won't listen. You could even tell if she combed her hair in the bathroom, broken strands all over the sink. Healthy hair doesn't break like that. She'll learn one day. :(

It takes a big man to see & appreciate the little things.

Doing a little girl's hair can be a trying experience if you let it, but it is so important that you treat it as a bonding experience. Massage your baby girl's head. Tell her how beautiful and strong her hair is. Show her a few pictures and let her decide which style you will give her if she is old enough. Also, putting TV or games on works wonders.

Some ladies I know just do their kids' hair in their sleep to avoid the tears.

You will find out what works for you. Hopefully the crying can be cut down, but if not and your heart is too soft to hear her cry, don't push it. Your soft heart towards her is a blessing. Dont be afriad to let someone else do it.

Btw...this is perhaps the BEST instructions I have ever read. You should seriously considering adding pictures and a step by step and selling it as a short book for black dad's and hair.
