Don Blackman Hospitalised With Stage 4 Cancer.

Jazz pianist, songwriter and producer Don Blackman has been hospitalised with stage four cancer.

The news was confirmed by his daughter Irene on Twitter last night, who asked fans to “please pray for us”. Although Twitter is awash with people posting “Don Blackman R.I.P.”, including posts by Deee-lite’s Lady Miss Kier and Lalah Hathaway, the news – to our knowledge – has yet to be confirmed by his family or a representative. Stage Four cancer means that the cancer has spread to various parts of the human body.

As well as a solo artist in his own right, releasing a self-titled album in 1982 that featured the hit ‘Heart’s Desire’, Blackman played with acts like Parliament / Funkadelic, Roy Ayers, Janet Jackson, Sting, Earth, Wind and Fire and more.

Damn, Damn, Damn!!!!

I just played his solo LP a few weeks ago.

A lot of people don't know that he also wrote and sung this classic from Weldon Irvine's The Sisters LP as well.

Blackman was from Queens, NY. He became a successful session musician and contributed to acts like Parliament/Funkadelic, Roy Ayers, Sting, Janet Jacket, Kurtis Blow, Twennynine, and Earth, Wind and Fire.

He released a self-titled solo album in 1982, which has been sampled by the likes of Master P, Madlib, J Dilla (with Slum Village) and DJ Jazzy Jeff. He also received a co-writing credit on Tupac's "Live to Kick It," and put out the record Listen as Don Blackman & the Family Tradition in 2002.

Blackman also contributed various compositions to television.

He was a little before my time but my boy put me onto him. I recognized his joints were heavily sampled. Then I realized the his original stuff was WAY better than the songs using his samples.
