Sony Casts Tom Holland (as Nathan Drake) for upcoming “Uncharted” Movie

http://www.ign.com/articles/2017/05...s-spider-man-star-tom-holland-as-nathan-drake

The latest Spider-Man, Tom Holland will play Nathan Drake in the long-gestating Uncharted movie.

According to Deadline, the movie will be set around the sequence in Uncharted 3: Drake's Deception in which a young Nathan first meets his mentor, Sullivan, placing it as a prequel to the video game series.

The casting decision was reportedly made after Sony Pictures chief Tom Rothman was impressed by Holland in the latest cut of the upcoming Spider-Man: Homecoming.

^^^ Exactly. Totally agree…. “You cast people to FIT THE STORY … you don’t change the story TO FIT THE CAST”. :smh:
——————————————————————————

Personally, I think there are 2 other people that would be better for this role onscreen…

If Sony needs an ‘older’ version of Drake (who is a KNOWN box-office draw)…. then Bradley Cooper has just the right mix of sarcastic personality, unhinged bravado & witty ‘one-liners’ to play Drake VERY WELL, imo.

BRADLEY COOPER (aka "FACEMAN" from the A-Team Movie)

However, if Sony really wants a ‘younger’ version of Drake… I would cast Joe Dempsie (as long as he can perform a highly believable ’American Accent’ - like Idris Elba did on 'The Wire', that is )… he would make a real good choice as Nathan Drake imo, mainly because...
  • He's not too young... so 'older fans' of the Game wouldn't think he was 'fresh out of high-school'. :dunno:
  • He's not too old... so 'younger fans' of the Game 'would be able to relate' to him.
  • So he could 'grow into the role' and probably stick around for a few potential 'sequels' that may come years apart.

JOE DEMPSIE (aka "GENDRY" from Game of Thrones)

They did a HORRIBLE job breaking this news...he is not cast as Nathan Drake proper...hes simply YOUNG Nathan Drake and hes actually perfect for that role, he looks just like him and has the physicality to pull off stunts thanks to spiderman.

Completely disagree.

The BIG reason why alot of fans do not like this casting choice...
  • is because nobody asked Sony to make a Prequel. :smh:
  • And nobody asked for a 'young Drake' :smh:
  • And Sony has given NO indication that they are EVER going to make an Uncharted Movie with an ADULT version of Nathan Drake. :hmm:
Sony didn't do a bad job of breaking the news.... the fan reception is 'lukewarm' (as it should be)... because the fans have been waiting for YEARS for an Uncharted Movie and Sony has announced some bullshit that nobody asked for.... in order to 'piggy-back' off Marvel's popularity. :hmm:

And this is Sony's BIG problem. People have been talking / complaining about this for YEARS.

http://variety.com/2014/film/news/a...lease-more-release-more-tentpoles-1201118909/

Sony has been relying on Spiderman movies for soo long... that Sony does NOT have any OTHER big tentpole franchise movies. :dunno:

Uncharted could have been their first 'tentpole' movie that could produce multiple sequels.... and what does Sony do?

Connect it to Spiderman..... by actually casting Spiderman as the lead in Uncharted. :smh:

:hithead:

Sony. Leave Spiderman the fuck alone. Create some new shit.

I'd rather Sony make a prequel then to do a BS Uncharted movie with poor casting. The reality is that the games and in-game cinema is sooo good there is no need to create a movie, and it sets the bar VERY high to even try. In reality if Nathan Fillion who drake was created after and of course voiced by was younger he would be drake and it'd be a done deal...but hes too old and cant do it. They were talking Chris Pratt and judging by how Jurassic turned out Im glad they didnt...

Too young. Fillion is perfect
You really think it's a smart choice to start a action franchise off with a 46 year old actor? 15 to 20 years ago he would have worked in the role but that time has passed. Holland is way to young to portray an adult Nathan Drake. Bad casting.

Uncharted is a 'standalone' franchise.

I'd rather Sony not make ANY kind of Uncharted movie whatsoever... if they cannot stop themselves from connecting it to Spiderman, somehow.

Do you really think a Nathan Drake franchise will cover a multitude of films?

Tomb Raider only had two films, yet it had in its lead a much bigger star playing a more popular character.

^^ Very true that they only made 2 Tomb Raider movies .... but I think there were 2 main reasons.....

#1 - The first major problem with the Tomb Raider movies (and 'why' they never made more of them)... is that ‘middle america’ would rather go see a ‘white male’ jump off cliffs and do impossible stunts & search for fantastical lost treasures.

i.e. These types of movies are based on video games that are DOMINATED by 'dark-haired, white males'

VIDEO GAMES ARE A WHITE MAN'S WORLD (2009)
https://psmag.com/social-justice/video-games-dominated-by-whites-3561

#2 - The second biggest problem was….. TIMING.

The first 2 Tomb Raider movies were just ‘too early’ to blow up enough to make alot more of them.

2001 - TOMB RAIDER 1 (Laura Croft)
- Production Budget: $115 million
- Domestic Gross: $131 million
- Worldwide Gross: $275 million

2003 - TOMB RAIDER 2 (Cradle of Life)
- Production Budget: $95 million
- Domestic Gross: $65 million
- Worldwide Gross: $156 million

Now Granted, Angelina Joile was like 24 years old & had just won an Oscar for ‘Girl, Interrupted’ when she was cast for the first Tomb Raider… but some of her 'best work' (playing similar 'gun-wielding' characters) came AFTER Tomb Raider.

s3j592.jpg

  • More importantly, these Tomb Raider movies came out long before the big wave of BLOCKBUSTER Superhero movies became ‘a thing’… and before the whole 'treasure-hunting + wild adventure' genre got ALOT more popular with moviegoers (in general) over the last decade, or so.

  • The very first TR1 movie even came out before ‘The Rock’ starred in the ‘Scorpion King’… and also before 5 different ‘Pirates of the Caribbean’ movies broke the whole ‘epic adventure genre’ wide open at the box-office.

  • They also both came out before 'The Bourne Identity' franchise really took off.

  • All those other movies grew fan interest & popularity in the genre, as a whole.
This is important because the entire 'Uncharted' series is like a mix between several popular movies in those genres, like….
  • Bourne Identity
  • The DaVinci Code
  • Pirates of the Caribbean
  • Raiders of the Lost Ark
Nowadays, with a ‘white male’ as the ‘lead character’ in an ‘action / adventure / treasure-hunt’ genre type of movie…. that provides a ‘wild ride’ for the audience… it can probably do MUCH BETTER than Tomb Raider did, especially because BLOCKBUSTER (tent-pole) Franchise Movies are currently dominating at the box-office.

Just my opinion.

Good point.

But Nathan Drake doesn't wear an 'iron suit' from head-to-toe during 90% of his stunts, fistfights & hand-to-hand combat scenes... which CGI special FX can make up for. :D

I do agree with you btw, that Sony could make it work by casting someone who is a bit 'older' than Tom Holland, who is only 20 yrs old.

This is kinda like what a Nathan Drake 'fight scene' would look like, on camera...

Robert Downey Jr. was 42 yrs old when he filmed Sherlock Holmes, in 2009.

That's why someone like Bradley Cooper (age 42) is tailor-made for this role, imo. (or someone a bit younger, like Joe Dempsie who is 29.)

Instead of using 'scientific narration' during the fistfight... Just swap some of Bradley Cooper's hilarious 'one-liners' and witty Ad-libs and you would get something very close to this...

^^^ This type of 'intense action' is what the Uncharted video game franchise is known for... and does BEST.

But when Sony casts someone as Drake who is only 20 years old (with no superpowers ), he's not going to be onscreen 'slugging it out' in bar fights with grown ass men :smh:... or getting caught up in 'wild gun battles' with ruthless killers, soldiers of fortune & trained mercenaries. :smh:

More than likely, Tom Holland is just going to be constantly 'running away' (parkour style) from every major adversary in the movie... while someone who is much older (like Sully) handles all the real 'dirty work' & gunplay... while trying to keep Tom alive.

Which is exactly what a 'young Nathan Drake' does in the video game, during the flashbacks. (i.e. He ride bikes, climbs fences, runs from the cops, scales buildings, sneaks around, kicks grownups in the shins, crawls thru air vents, finds clues, etc)

There's not much (believable) 'desperate action sequences' in the source material that are a matter of 'life or death'... For a 20-yr old... Or a college-age student.. (with no superpowers.) :smh:

As a result, I could see an Uncharted movie starring Tom Holland as a 'Young Drake' ending up mostly like a (real-life) Grand Theft Auto 'Escort Mission'... with a few (DaVinci Code types of) 'history puzzles' thrown in... to provide some suspense/drama. :dunno:

And whoever guns down (or knocks out) the MOST henchmen in less than 2 hours.... is going to be considered the REAL 'badass' of the film ... (instead of Drake himself) and if that happens, the audience would leave the theater thinking... "This was really Sully's movie. He stole the show. It felt like Drake was HIS sidekick...instead of being the other way around" :dunno:

Lastly, if Sony is casting a 'young Drake' to be the leading character... It pretty much GUARANTEES that the movie will be Rated 'PG-13'. Not Rated 'R' for mature audiences.

I was going to say this!
He actually looks a lot like the young Nathan Drake.

Now I'm not into video games much at all.
I only play Uncharted, GTA, and Watch Dogs.
Hell, the only reason I bought the PS4 was for Uncharted 4. The damn thing has been collecting dust ever since I beat it.

I love the Uncharted series.
Please don't fuck this movie up?

I'm sure that's the intent with most films. Get the very most you can. If the film does well then supply and demand. It's a matter of having a good script .
