Stephen Hillenburg, the creator of the megahit Nickelodeon cartoon series “SpongeBob SquarePants,” died on Monday. He was 57.

The cause of death was ALS, which Hillenburg revealed he had been diagnosed with in March of last year.

“We are incredibly saddened by the news that Steve Hillenburg has passed away following a battle with ALS,” Nickelodeon said in a statement. “He was a beloved friend and long-time creative partner to everyone at Nickelodeon, and our hearts go out to his entire family. Steve imbued ‘SpongeBob SquarePants’ with a unique sense of humor and innocence that has brought joy to generations of kids and families everywhere. His utterly original characters and the world of Bikini Bottom will long stand as a reminder of the value of optimism, friendship and the limitless power of imagination.”

Hillenburg graduated from Humboldt State University in 1984 with a bachelor’s degree in Natural Resource Planning and Interpretation, with an emphasis on marine resources. He then became a marine biology teacher at the Orange County Marine Institute (now the Ocean Institute) in Dana Point, California. This interest, combined with his artistic talent and love of the sea and its creatures, led him to write and illustrate stories as teaching tools with characters that would later become the denizens of SpongeBob’s home, Bikini Bottom.

He began his animation career in 1987, pursuing a degree in Experimental Animation at the California Institute of Arts in Valencia and earning his Master of Fine Arts in 1992.

That same year he won an award for Best Animated Concept at the Ottawa International Animation Festival for his animated short “Wormholes”, which went on to be shown at various international animation festivals. From 1993 to 1996 he would pursue work in television as a director and writer on Nickelodeon’s series “Rocko’s Modern Life.”

From there, he began to work full-time on writing producing, and directing on the animated series that would eventually become “SpongeBob SquarePants.” The first episode aired on Nickelodeon on May 1, 1999 and the series commenced its full run on July 17 of that year. The series has aired nearly 250 episodes to date. It appealed not only to children but older viewers as well, with college students even organizing viewing parties for the show.

The series has won both U.S. and British Emmy Awards, Annie Awards, and ASACP Awards and has been dubbed or subtitled in more than 60 languages, including Urdu, Azerbaijani and Maori.

Hillenburg also wrote, produced, and directed “The SpongeBob SquarePants Movie,” which was released in 2004 and went on to gross over $140 million worldwide. Hillenburg then wrote the story for and was the executive producer of the sequel, “The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge Out of Water,” in 2015.

Hillenburg — or Steve as he was known to family, friends, and fans — was born August 21, 1961, at Fort Sill in Lawton, Oklahoma. After leaving the military, his father, Kelly N. Hillenburg, Jr., became a draftsman and designer for aerospace companies. His mother Nancy taught visually impaired students.

He is survived by his wife of 20 years Karen Hillenburg, son Clay, mother Nancy Hillenburg (nee Dufour) and brother Brian Kelly Hillenburg, his wife Isabel, and nieces Emma and Hazel.

Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), also known as motor neurone disease (MND), or Lou Gehrig's disease, is a specific disease which causes the death of neurons controlling voluntary muscles.[3][5][11] Some also use the term motor neuron disease for a group of conditions of which ALS is the most common.[2] ALS is characterized by stiff muscles, muscle twitching, and gradually worsening weakness due to muscles decreasing in size.[2] This results in difficulty speaking, swallowing, and eventually breathing.[2][3]

The cause is not known in 90% to 95% of cases.[5] The remaining 5–10% of cases are inherited from a person's parents.[4] About half of these genetic cases are due to one of two specific genes.[5] The underlying mechanism involves damage to both upper and lower motor neurons.[2] The diagnosis is based on a person's signs and symptoms, with testing done to rule out other potential causes.[5]

No cure for ALS is known.[5] A medication called riluzole may extend life by about two to three months.[7] Non-invasive ventilation may result in both improved quality and length of life.[6] The disease can affect people of any age, but usually starts around the age of 60 and in inherited cases around the age of 50.[4] The average survival from onset to death is two to four years.[9] About 10% survive longer than 10 years.[5] Most die from respiratory failure.[4] In much of the world, rates of ALS are unknown.[4] In Europe and the United States the disease affects about two to three people per 100,000 per year.[4][10][12]

Descriptions of the disease date back to at least 1824 by Charles Bell.[13] In 1869, the connection between the symptoms and the underlying neurological problems was first described by Jean-Martin Charcot, who in 1874 began using the term amyotrophic lateral sclerosis.[13] It became well known in the United States in the 20th century when in 1939 it affected the baseball player Lou Gehrig and later worldwide following the 1963 diagnosis of cosmologist Stephen Hawking.[14][15] In 2014, videos of the Ice Bucket Challenge went viral on the Internet and increased public awareness of the condition.[16]

Wow. I didn't know he died. Rest in peace. That show has some hilarious episodes. Remember that time Spongebob & Patrick, stole a balloon on free balloon day? Or that time Mr. Krabs, asked Spongebob, to set up a birthday party for Pearl? Or that time Spongebob & Patrick, FAAFO why they should not disturb Sandy, when she is in hibernation?

Its crazy its been 25 years.

I actually checked out of Nickelodeon when Spongebob started. I was already transitioning to Carton Network with the advent of the original holy trinity of Cartoon Network(Johnny Bravo, Cow and Chicken, and Dexters Laboratory), but Spongebob was a sign that it was time for me to go.

I will say one moment from the original episode stuck with me:

My children liked those shows so I wound up watching them with them. With children ranging from 27 to 13 years in age I watched a gang of cartoons.

Thats what WE all need to be doing as ADULT, MONITERING what are children are watching..

WE ARE A GREAT MIGHTY MIGHTY PEOPLE but we MUST come to terms we BEEN DUMBED DOWN

from GREATNESS... the simple fact, we trust the MUTHAFUCKAS LITERALLY STEALING OUR LAND, RESOURCES and CULTURE

MAKE US THINK WE CAME FROM SOMEWHERE ELSE WHERE THIS IS OUR HOMELAND ALL ALONG,

and we trust this entity TO TEACH OUR CHILDREN, hence the GREAT DUMBING DOWN,

WE MUST MONITOR EVERYTHING OUR CHILDREN WATCH... they literally found DEMONIC SUBLIMINAL messages,

on shows marketed to children ON YOUTUBE..

I say all that to say, Damn good job watching what your children are watching... to make sure no fuckery goes

afoot!!

KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK WE ALL NEED TO DO IT and plus you get those heart warming lifelong memories,

spent with your children..

but fo real, We need to understand, they cant kill us OFF ON OUR OWN LAND WE ARE SPIRITUAL BEING TIED TO IT,

they can only hope to control our minds thoughts and actions throught their NEVER ENDING PSYCHOLOGICAL OPERATIONS...

bruh in this CORPORATION..

ITS ALL ONE BIG PSY OP TO KEEP US UNDER CONTROL!!

Gotta watch what they are trying to feed our children on a physical and psychological level...

If we arent PROTECTING OUR CHILDREN WE AINT DOING SHIT!!!

The war for OUR minds TAKES place on SCREENS!!!

we see it on full display during election year.. nothing put a show, to make us think figure heads

run the country... and we do..

every fuckin four years.. think figure heads run the country and its not the super wealthy pulling strings..
