It's interesting to me how people can attack religion (Christianity specifically) with the same amount of vigor and tenacity that religious nuts use to condemn those that don't believe and still have the audacity to act superior.

The bottom line is regardless of if you believe in science or if you believe in religion, there are things that we as men, as human beings can't even begin to understand. Life is far more complex than that in my opinion, and to speak definatively from either direction is naive.

Well... Religion is all about speaking definitively about what is unknowable and science is supposed to be an effort to define that which is proveable, which sets the two pretty far apart.

If you believe that "there are things that we as men, as human beings can't even begin to understand," then that belief should temper any religious conviction.

I don't believe that a book written by men, who proclaimed themselves to fallible is the end all be all. However I also don't believe that man, who has the innate desire to learn more and understand more has reached a point that they have learned it all.

The presence of one in my opinion should not exclude the other. If anything there should be more of an attempt IMO to coexist. Maybe that's naive of me but that's how I roll.

I mean "conviction" in the sense that religions require-- absolute certainty.

If you believe in limits on human understanding and that the Bible is a book written by fallible men, on what basis can you claim any certainty as to a savior or be faithful to the first commandment's command of unwavering loyalty to one God?

There should definitely be an attempt on the part of peoples to coexist, but not irreconcilable thought patterns such as "we can't know everything" and "I know how the universe started and how it will end and I'm totally certain of this."

you're ignoring the fact that those subgroups don't generally relate to one another, and are so diverse and different in belief systems that they can really be seen as main groups with subgroups within themselves. you should've included rastafarians within those subgroups too. the same can be said for islam though. budism and judaism are more or less stand alone belief systems.....but that may be taking you off to another direction of thought.

point is, islam is by far the most violent belief system. not talking about the PRACTICIONERS at this point. simply the basis for the belief system
