I don't know if this was a Shaw Bros. movie or not but does anyone remember a karate movie that had three characters like the Three Stooges?

And while we're at it my top 2 Shaw Brothers directors. Couldn't make a top 5 out of this because so many of the classics come from these two directors. Either director could be number one. They're both great!

1. Chang Cheh ( Five Element Ninjas, Five Deadly Venoms, Shaolin Temple, The Boxer From Shantung, One-Armed Swordsman, Five Shaolin Masters)
2. Lau Kar-Leung (36Th Chamber Of Shaolin, Eight Diagram Pole Fighter, Dirty Ho, Heroes Of The East, Legendary Weapons Of China)

I’ve been searching for this kung fu movie for about 35+ years. Here’s a brief description:

It follows two guys who were best friends, but couldn’t fight . They lived in a village where the direction of your belt determined your status. If you wore your belt to the right, it meant you were a kung fu master; if you wore it to the left, it meant you couldn’t fight. These two guys wore their belts to the right and went around Intimidating the other villagers, pretending to be masters.

When real kung fu masters arrived and challenged them, they tried to explain that they only wore their belts that way to fake their status. But it was too late—they both got beaten badly. I believe one of them was killed, while the other escaped to the Shaolin Temple to learn real kung fu. Eventually, he returned to seek revenge.

Does this plot sound familiar to anyone?

The film you're looking for is called "Martial Club". It was directed by Lau Kar-Leung and stars Gordon Liu, Hsiao Ho, Kara Hui Ying-Hung and Wang Lung-Wei. Gordon Liu and Wang Lung-Wei ended up having an excellent fight near the end of the film.
