No More EBT Card or Cash Benefits. This will be replaced with Canned Goods.

WASHINGTON ― Facing a trillion-dollar deficit because of his just-passed tax cuts, President Donald Trump has an idea for how to get some of that money back: making poor people eat beans and rice.

“Under the proposal,” Monday’s budget document says, “households receiving $90 or more per month in SNAP benefits will receive a portion of their benefits in the form of a USDA Foods package, which would include items such as shelf-stable milk, ready to eat cereals, pasta, peanut butter, beans and canned fruit, vegetables, and meat, poultry or fish.”

Republicans, and even some Democrats, have long complained that poor people allegedly use their food stamps for foods that are unhealthy or too expensive, such as steak, lobster or soda. (The truth is that according to the best available data, food stamp recipients eat basically the same food as everyone else.)

What’s the problem ? If you on free lunch at school that dictate what a kid eats. Why not dictate what an adult eats? Don’t like that shit get off your ass. The play is what company gets the contract to provide these foods?

With the amount of food allergies and other stuff, I can't see this being a good idea. Also most canned goods have lots of sodium. The purpose of this isn't to save money, they think people on welfare don't really need it, so they want to punish people, take away choices, and make getting help "unattractive".

I don't recall where I read it, but one state was trying to fix it where you couldn't buy either shredded cheese, or sharp cheddar, or maybe both. Where I shop cheese prices are the same across several varieties, the only reason to change this is because they want to reduce flavor and pleasure. One place wanted to restrict purchasing spicess and condiments. One wanted to restrict the size of packages. So if 5 lbs of beans was cheaper than 1, they still had to buy just one lb. If cheddar is cheaper than whatever they are allowed to buy, they don't have choices to make their benefits go further.

Most of this stuff is about shaming the poor.

The poor doesn’t deserve to live. And this is from the all lives matter camp. At some point we are going to have to admit proudly that we love the government, and corporations are inherently evil.

Government and corporations are as good or evil as the people running them. The GOP has made clear for years what they think of poor folks and anyone not white. That we don't do our best to keep them out of power and make excuses as to why it is ok to sit out when someone doesn't "excite" us is on us to some degree. They were talking about cutting entitlements as phase two of the tax heist bill before it was even signed.

The government and a corporation have 2 different missions. The former is to advocate the greater good for the citizens, and the latter is to generate a profit.

Yeah but you can be profitable and still advocate for the greater good. You think walmart will cease to earn millions if they raise wages? If anything, better pay means less turnover, more experienced and knowledgeable staff and less money invested in training new hires because you retain folks. Costco is a great example. They pay their employees well, and they seem genuinely happy to work there.

I used to work near a Whole Foods. I would go in on my lunch break for their hot-foods selection. As I was stacking my plate up, I would watch what their employees on break were eating. They were eating a banana, an apple, or some miscellaneous food item that cost less than $2.

If your employees can not afford to consume your goods, maybe you shouldn’t be in business.

Fast forward a few years and the parking lot filled with Benz trucks have drivers using EBT cards. BTW, those drivers are Russians.

Walmart Wages Are the Main Reason People Depend on Food Stamps

I see people all the time at certain grocery stores offering to buy my groceries in exchange for cash (say $100 in groceries for $50 cash).

IN THEORY, this could stop some fraud by just giving people the food (canned veggies, canned fruit, etc.) rather than providing them the opportunity to do things they shouldn't.

In practice, this could turn out really bad. It could result in people getting LESS food. Plus, I highly doubt that Jesus would approve of poor people helping to pay for rich people's tax cuts.

Also, the canned food that they'll be given probably won't be the healthiest food ever.

These people are the antithesis of Jesus. They are the Romans. Let’s stop with their rhetoric.
