The reason Trump and republicans want the SAVE act - besides racist xenophobia- is because if there’s a federal law about voting, then presidents WILL have a role in administering elections. One of Trump’s arguments in court is that he is immune from prosecution in the fraudulent elector scheme because he was taking care the laws were faithfully executed. But states administer elections and the president has no role. Trump wants to change that and give presidents an immune lever of power over elections.
