(WBTW) — Following is a timeline of News13 coverage of the disappearance and death of Pee Dee paramedic Phonesia Machado-Fore and the arrest of Jaremy Smith, a Marion County man identified as a person of interest in her death and a suspect in the killing of New Mexico State Police Officer Justin Hare.

March 15: 52-year-old paramedic reported missing in Marion County

Machado-Fore, 52, is reported missing by the Marion County Sheriff’s Office. A paramedic with Florence County EMS and Marion County EMS, she was last seen on March 12 at her home in Marion.

Authorities find the body of Machado-Fore on the night of March 15 outside of Lake View in Dillon County. Marion County authorities identify Smith, 32, as a person of interest in the death of the Pee Dee Dee paramedic. The New Mexico State Police also says Smith ambushed and killed Officer Justin Hare, 35, early Friday morning along Interstate 40. Reaction begins pouring in from Pee Dee authorities.

March 16: ‘We will find you:’ Marion County man target of sweeping New Mexico manhunt after officer’s death

A manhunt continues in New Mexico for Smith after he is accused of shooting and killing Officer Hare in the early morning hours of March 15. The New Mexico State Police says Smith, who has ties to the Albuquerque area, was driving Machado-Fore’s white BMW when he shot Hare, who had stopped to help him with a flat tire.

After the shooting, police said Smith stole Hare’s patrol car and crashed it about 14 miles away near mile marker 304 on Interstate 40. Hare’s body was found at mile marker 312. He was taken to a nearby hospital and died from gunshot wounds at 7:12 a.m. on March 15.

First responders across the Pee Dee remember Machado-Fore as a lifesaver, listener and beacon of calm for strangers dealing with some of the most upsetting moments they’ll ever experience. Fore began working for Florence County EMS in 2017, and the agency said she was a loving mother and grandmother who loved making people feel better.

March 17: Suspect in killing of NM police officer, Marion County paramedic arrested, deputies say

Smith is arrested by the Bernalillo County Sheriff’s Office. The arrest came after a deputy-involved shooting in Albuquerque.

March 17: Marion man wanted in New Mexico police killing shot by deputies during pursuit

Smith is shot by Bernalillo County sheriff’s deputies in an Albuquerque neighborhood before his arrest on Sunday. He was hit multiple times and is under guard at an area hospital.

New Mexico State Police Chief Troy Weisler said Smith’s arrest gives some closure to Hare’s colleagues. “Yesterday we said that we would bring Jeramy Smith to justice. There was nowhere he could run, that there was nowhere he could hide. Today, thanks to our community and our fellow law enforcement partners, we were able to do that,” Weisler said.

March 17: Marion County sheriff ‘overwhelmed with relief’ following Smith arrest

Marion County Sheriff Brian Wallace said he is “overwhelmed with relief” by Smith’s arrest. “Our hearts are not only heavy for our own loss here in the Pee Dee region, but for the loss of New Mexico State Police Officer Justin Hare,” Wallace said.

Wallace told News13 that Smith will remain in the custody of New Mexico State Police to answer charges of murder, as Marion County officials have yet to charge him.

March 18: Marion County man accused in New Mexico officer’s killing arrested at least a dozen times in South Carolina since 2007

Smith remained in a New Mexico hospital Monday morning, according to Nexstar affiliate KRQE. Bernalillo County Sheriff John Allen said Sunday that Smith was hit multiple times during his capture and was under guard at an area hospital as he recovers before answering on charges including first-degree murder. Because of his injuries, it’s unclear when Smith could make a court appearance.

News13 also obtained records from the South Carolina Law Enforecment Division showing that that Smith has an extensive criminal history in South Carolina dating back 15 years and logging more than a dozen felonies.

March 18: Marion, Dillon county sheriffs open joint investigation after Pee Dee paramedic’s death

Authorities in Dillon and Marion counties are jointly investigating the death of Machado-Fore, along with federal and state authorities, according to a joint statements from Dillon County Sheriff Jamie Hamilton and Marion County Sheriff Brian Wallace. An autopsy was performed on Monday that the sheriffs said “will be a crucial piece” of the investigation, though officials say it could be “several weeks” before they have the results.

March 18: Marion County EMS director remembers Phonesia Machado-Fore

Trey Cooper, Marion County’s EMS director, spoke with News13 after Machado-Fore’s killing. “Phonesia was . . . well, first off, she was just one of those, happy-go-lucky people,” he said. “She was always around, always had a smile, and just loved her job and loved people.”

March 19: Funeral service set in Marion for Phonesia Machado-Fore

A funeral service is set for Phonesia Machado-Fore, a paramedic whose body was found in Dillon County, according to an online obituary. Machado-Fore’s funeral is set for 2 p.m. on Saturday at the CD Joyner Auditorium at 161 Elizabeth St.

March 19: Pee Dee paramedic died from gunshot wound, coroner says; death ruled a homicide

The death of Pee Dee paramedic Phonesia Machado-Fore has been ruled a homicide after an autopsy showed she died from a gunshot wound to the head, Dillon County Coroner Donnie Grimsley told News13.

March 19: Funeral plans set for New Mexico State Police officer allegedly killed by Marion man

The funeral for Officer Hare will be at 1 p.m. EST on March 27 at the Legacy Church at 7201 Central Ave. NW in Albuquerque, the New Mexico State Police said on its Facebook page. Daniel’s Family Funeral Services, 4310 Sara Rd Rio Rancho, New Mexico, is handling the arrangements.

MARCH 19: ‘They want justice:’ Marion County sheriff offers new details in death, disappearance of Pee Dee paramedic

Sheriff Brian Wallace says the investigation is still in its early stages and that local authorities are cooperating with New Mexico and federal officials. Wallace told News13 that a representative from Marion County or the sheriff’s office plans to attend Officer Hare’s March 27 funeral in New Mexico. He also says that Machado-Fore’s “family is hurt, angry, and they want justice for their loved one just as much as we do.”

MARCH 22: Federal charges filed against man accused of shooting, killing New Mexico State Police officer

Federal authorities on charged Smith with carjacking resulting in death and discharging a firearm during and in relation to a crime of violence in the killing of Officer Hare. When United States Attorney for the District of New Mexico Alexander M.M. Uballez was asked if he would seek the death penalty, he said, “so the death penalty is a decision that’s held by the Attorney General of the United States. Whether and how we get to that eventual determination is internal to our office. But once that determination is made the public will know.”

Uballez also said the “the death penalty is authorized by the statute carjacking resulting in death.”

New Mexico Attorney General Raúl Torrez said they are withholding state charges against Smith.

MARCH 24: New Mexico State Police honor Pee Dee paramedic with presence at her funeral

Members of the New Mexico State Police were among those who attended Machado-Fore’s funeral. Wallace said on the department’s Facebook page that Fore’s family was presented with a New Mexico state flag and a photograph of Ofc. Justin Hare.

“We are overwhelmed by the sacrifices made for these wonderful officers to be with us today. Our hearts are with them in the days ahead as they prepare to lay their fellow officer to rest,” Wallace said on the department’s Facebook page.

MARCH 27: Marion County leaders attending funeral for slain New Mexico State Police officer

Representatives of the Marion County Sheriff’s Office traveled to Albuquerque to attend funeral services for Hare and presented members of his family with a donation from the South Carolina chapter of Brotherhood for the Fallen and a certified flag that was flown on the Statehouse grounds.

Smith, will continue to be held in federal custody, according to authorities in New Mexico. He’s facing between 10 years to life in prison on firearm charges. The warrants against Jaremy Smith, 33, of Marion, who remains in federal custody in New Mexico, are for murder, kidnapping, carjacking, criminal conspiracy, two counts of grand larceny of a motor vehicle, two counts of first-degree burglary, two counts of possession of a weapon during the commission of a violent crime and seven counts of being a felon in possession of a handgun.

April 10: Federal grand jury indicts Jaremy Smith in killing of New Mexico State Police officer

A federal grand jury in New Mexico indicts Smith in the killing of Hare, charging him with carjacking resulting in death; causing death by the discharge of a firearm during and inrelation to a crime of violence; kidnapping resulting in death; being a prohibited person in possession of a firearm; possession of a stolen firearm; and interstate transport of a stolen vehicle.

Smith is scheduled to be arraigned on the charges on April 18.

April 11: Warrants shed new light into Jaremy Smith’s alleged kidnapping, killing of Pee Dee paramedic

Warrants show that between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. on March 13, Smith allegedly entered a residence on Wildwood Loop in Marion County with a Taurus handgun and kidnapped Machado-Fore. Smith is accused of taking her vehicle, a 2001 BMW, and driving it to Jones Drive in Dillon County where he allegedly shot her in the back of the head.

April 17: Body camera video shows pursuit, capture of man accused of killing New Mexico State Police Officer Justin Hare

The Bernalillo County Sheriff’s Office releases deputy body camera footage from Smith’s pursuit and capture.

Two deputies chased Smith across a handful of backyards, scaling multiple walls to track him down. Authorities said at one point, he used a trampoline to climb over a wall.

April 18: Marion man accused of killing New Mexico officer, Pee Dee paramedic pleads not guilty to federal charges

Smith, 33, pleaded not guilty to federal charges of carjacking resulting in death; causing death by the discharge of a firearm during and in relation to a crime of violence; kidnapping resulting in death; being a prohibited person in possession of a firearm; possession of a stolen firearm; and interstate transport of a stolen vehicle. Smith, who could still face state charges in New Mexico, will remain in custody until a trial begins.

APRIL 28: June trial date set for Marion man held in killing of New Mexico State Police officer

Jury selection and a potential start to Smith’s trial is slated for 9 a.m. on June 10 at the Pete V. Domenici United States Courthouse in Albuquerque.

If convicted, he faces a mandatory life sentence or death for the kidnapping resulting in death charge, and any number of years up to life or death for the carjacking and discharge of firearm offenses. He could also face state charges in New Mexico, according to previous remarks made by New Mexico Attorney General Raúl Torrez.

MAY 30: Mullins man accused of going on crime spree with suspect in killing of Marion County paramedic, New Mexico officer

Joshua Antwain Johnson, 30, of Mullins, is believed to have joined up with Jaremy Smith after Smith allegedly kidnapped and killed Phonesia Machco-Fore in March, the Marion County Sheriff’s Office said Thursday in a news release. The two men then “continued on a spree of criminal activity in Marion County” before heading toward New Mexico, where authorities said Smith gunned down Officer Justin Hare.

Authorities said Johnson was not involved in Fore’s killing but that he traveled to Texas with Smith, who left him at a convenience store there before going on to New Mexico.

JUNE 4: Mullins man went to slain Marion County paramedic’s home with murder suspect Jaremy Smith, warrants say

According to the warrants, Johnson and Smith were heavily armed when they allegedly entered the home where Machado-Fore’s was staying on Wildwood Loop between 8 p.m. and 11:50 p.m. on March 13. Machado-Fore was last seen on March 12.

Earlier warrants alleged that Smith kidnapped Machado-Fore from her home between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. on March 13. Her body was found on March 15 outside of Lake View in Dillon County.

Authorities allege that Smith killed Machado-Fore, stole her white BMW, discarded her body and then returned to the home with Johnson. Johnson and Smith are also accused of taking the roommate’s vehicle, a 2011 Chevrolet Silverado.

JUNE 8: Trial delayed for Marion man accused in deadly roadside ambush of New Mexico State police officer

U.S. District Court Judge James O. Browning on Tuesday granted a request by Jaremy Smith’s defense team to push the trial back nearly a month to July 8.

“The court finds that granting the continuance will strike a proper balance between the ends of justice and the best interests of the public,” Browning wrote in his June 4 decision.

He also said pushing back the trial was necessary because “defense counsel anticipates plea negotiations with the government will begin shortly.”

JULY 8: Federal judge approves 2nd delay in trial of Marion man accused of killing New Mexico State Police officer

A federal judge in New Mexico has approved a second delay in Smith’s trial. His lawyers filed a request on Wednesday asking for the delay in his trial, which was scheduled to begin on Monday. Their request was unopposed, and an order granting the continuance was filed on Sunday, court records show.

Smith is accused of shooting and killing Officer Hare on March 15 along Interstate 40 outside of Albuquerque. His trial was initially set to start June 10 before he was granted a delay last month.

AUG. 15: Marion man accused of killing New Mexico State Police officer will not face death penalty

The man accused of killing New Mexico State Police Officer Justin Hare will not face the death penalty, according to a notice filed by prosecutors in federal court on Wednesday.

In the court notice submitted by United States Attorney for the District of New Mexico Alexander M.M. Uballez, prosecutors wrote that they would not seek the death penalty in the case. Smith is charged with carjacking resulting in death and discharging a firearm during and in relation to a crime of violence.

If convicted, he faces a mandatory life sentence or death for the kidnapping resulting in death charge, and any number of years up to life or death for the carjacking and discharge of firearm offenses. He could also face state charges in New Mexico, according to previous remarks made by New Mexico Attorney General Raúl Torrez.

MAY 30: Mullins man accused of going on crime spree with suspect in killing of Marion County paramedic, New Mexico officer

Joshua Antwain Johnson, 30, of Mullins, is believed to have joined up with Jaremy Smith after Smith allegedly kidnapped and killed Phonesia Machco-Fore in March, the Marion County Sheriff’s Office said Thursday in a news release. The two men then “continued on a spree of criminal activity in Marion County” before heading toward New Mexico, where authorities said Smith gunned down Officer Justin Hare.

Authorities said Johnson was not involved in Fore’s killing but that he traveled to Texas with Smith, who left him at a convenience store there before going on to New Mexico.

JUNE 4: Mullins man went to slain Marion County paramedic’s home with murder suspect Jaremy Smith, warrants say

According to the warrants, Johnson and Smith were heavily armed when they allegedly entered the home where Machado-Fore’s was staying on Wildwood Loop between 8 p.m. and 11:50 p.m. on March 13. Machado-Fore was last seen on March 12.

Earlier warrants alleged that Smith kidnapped Machado-Fore from her home between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. on March 13. Her body was found on March 15 outside of Lake View in Dillon County.

Authorities allege that Smith killed Machado-Fore, stole her white BMW, discarded her body and then returned to the home with Johnson. Johnson and Smith are also accused of taking the roommate’s vehicle, a 2011 Chevrolet Silverado.

JUNE 8: Trial delayed for Marion man accused in deadly roadside ambush of New Mexico State police officer

U.S. District Court Judge James O. Browning on Tuesday granted a request by Jaremy Smith’s defense team to push the trial back nearly a month to July 8.

“The court finds that granting the continuance will strike a proper balance between the ends of justice and the best interests of the public,” Browning wrote in his June 4 decision.

He also said pushing back the trial was necessary because “defense counsel anticipates plea negotiations with the government will begin shortly.”

JULY 8: Federal judge approves 2nd delay in trial of Marion man accused of killing New Mexico State Police officer

A federal judge in New Mexico has approved a second delay in Smith’s trial. His lawyers filed a request on Wednesday asking for the delay in his trial, which was scheduled to begin on Monday. Their request was unopposed, and an order granting the continuance was filed on Sunday, court records show.

Smith is accused of shooting and killing Officer Hare on March 15 along Interstate 40 outside of Albuquerque. His trial was initially set to start June 10 before he was granted a delay last month.

AUG. 15: Marion man accused of killing New Mexico State Police officer will not face death penalty

The man accused of killing New Mexico State Police Officer Justin Hare will not face the death penalty, according to a notice filed by prosecutors in federal court on Wednesday.

In the court notice submitted by United States Attorney for the District of New Mexico Alexander M.M. Uballez, prosecutors wrote that they would not seek the death penalty in the case. Smith is charged with carjacking resulting in death and discharging a firearm during and in relation to a crime of violence.


He did all that shit and he not even getting the death penalty.. Smh!
