OUTKAST FANS ARE RIGHT TO BE DISAPPOINTED BY THE COACHELLA SHOW

"So like, this is their first show in a long time, right?"

Yes, young woman in a floral-print dress standing next to me. This is indeed Outkast's first show in a long time.

Ten years, to be exact.

Wait, where are you going? It's only a half hour into the show.

Bored, you say?

But, I mean, this is Outkast, arguably the greatest hip-hop duo ever. And it's their triumphant return to the stage, at the Coachella festival no less. This is the first of a 40-plus-gig reunion run. You must be pumped?

No? Really?

Ah, I see. After having your synapses ravaged by DJ wunderkind Martin Garrix at the sensory-assaulting Sahara Tent this isn't very exciting. You didn't expect Big Boi and Andre 3000 to appear onstage, run through their menacing "B.O.B. (Bombs Over Baghdad)," only to spend much of the next hour inside a transparent cube revisiting their deep cuts and respective solo material.

Okay. I get that. But I promise, in the final minutes of their show, even though most of the crowd will have walked the long "green path" to "Parent Pickup," fed up by Three Stacks' snoozy "She Lives in My Lap" and "Behold a Lady," they'll perform their hit songs. You know, "Ms. Jackson," "So Fresh, So Clean," "Hey Ya."

Okay, so it might be totally unprofessional and anticlimactic when Andre asks if they have time for one more and then launch into "The Whole World" only to have the music cut out and him say, "I know it's weird," before he and Big Boi leave the stage.

But hold on. Yes! That is Future. Hmm. He's performing one of his songs at an Outkast show. A bit bizarre, you say. Fair enough. But hey, at least we now know his new album is coming out on April 22. He said it three times.

Janelle Monae is indeed a sweet surprise. Crazy how the crowd seems to enjoy her rendition of "Tightrope" more than anything performed by the headlining act.

Okay, I'll leave you alone now.

But one last thing: can't you appreciate how incredibly precise Big Boi and Andre's rhyme patterns are? Isn't it wild how after so much time apart they sound so in sync and cohesive?

Still not with me here? Let down by this whole thing?

I suppose the Outkast reunion did sound better on paper.

Carry on in your walk to parent pickup.

http://www.esquire.com/blogs/culture/outkast-coachella

this is the one of a number of articles where people are noting that the show wasn't all it could have been or they thought it would be.

Most noted/complained was the long section in the middle where they performed alot of non single cuts that most weren't familiar with then how the end got cut off..

for those that saw it online...be honest..was it more boring than you thought???

I enjoyed it. Dre had mic issues for the majority of the set and the crowd was wack. It is what it is...it happens. Cynics are just lookin for a reason to be negative. Fuck em

They didn't know the music

yeah..looks like a case of a lot of people claiming their outkast fans when they actually really like only a few songs from them. :smh:

But on the other hand I think thier set was really long for a reunion first time in a long time thing. In retrospect they probably should have done 45 minutes to an hour tops and do extended versions of the hits if anything. I've noticed that old skool performers when doing long concerts throw in a number of popular covers between their own hits simply for that reason that doing 5 or 6 non single (less well known) songs in a row can be a drag.

They did bring out other performers (Jonelle) to pump things up but there was a drag in the middle if youre not familiar with their whole albums of work.

I've always said concerts must be about being in the presence of the artists because it damn sure ain't about the music. That shit sucked ass! Acoustic sucked, motherfuckas huffin and puffin with the mic too close to their mouths. Lighting was bad and it looked like them fools just came from freaknik and hopped on the stage. I think I'll stick with studio versions. Live ain't shit!

Concerts can be incredible if the act knows how to put on a show. I've never seen an Outkast show live before so I don't know if this performance was normal for them in terms of how they showcase themselves.

Energy on their end was definitely lacking tho..and how the dressed was really blah. But you have to consider that all that funk/hippy look that Andre had was 10 YEARS ago...(yes Hey Ya is that old..lol) so its not surprising he wouldn't come out looking and acting like he did at the time that song was hot.

Them niggas should have done a REAL concert and went on tour with Goodie Mob instead of doing a fucking music festival.:smh:

I said that before this even happened. A music festival isn't the right place for a reunion of such a legendary group. They need a full stage show with all the smoke and mirrors after being away for so long.

I think 90 minutes and 27 songs may have been too long.

for a cracker concert yes

if they would have did that at the park in the "A" they probably would have did their whole discography

i was jamming to the songs until near the end they lost me and when that future song come on i was like wtf...............i hate that nigga and that song

The set list was mad questionable too. Aquemini should have been the LAST song in the set to close out the show. "..but until them close the curtain, its him and I Aquemini."

Man I wish I was stage manager or some shit. I would have had that shit right!!!

Live instruments aren't needed for an Outkast concert. If so it needs to be minimal. And they were rushing too fast from song to song. Gotta let that shit marinate. Its been over ten years!!

That cube was too restricting and the lighting was shit.:smh:

I haven't watched this yet...

but off top just from my experience.

and the comments it was the crowd...HOWEVER Outkast also didn't prepare well to rock THAT particular crowd.

If it was the Wu or Cypress hill wouldn't been no issue.

Interestingly even though they may have the best stage show going...I think The Roots wouldn't have rocked that concert either.

If Outkast had went to Brooklyn Barklay Center it would have exploded...

In the A??? (Where it REALLY should have been done) it would have been epic.

A predominantly Black crowd would have lost they minds if it was Outkast, The Fugees, Pete Rock CL Smooth, The Roots, ATCQ, etc....

Nah they just didn't have that live amp up concert energy.. Sometimes you have to revise the songs to fit and move the crowd.. Bone use live instruments when they first came back but their approach was different, focusing more on amping the crowd and creating live energy.. This how you do it right..

lost a lot of respect for 3 stax, sorry

bruh, you're suppose to give 100% whether there are 30 people, 3,000, or 30K

this dude wasn't into it for whatever reason, but it's got nothing to do w/the crowd - put on a show for your fans watching on the internet!!

The crowd was:

1. Young
2. Buncha pill heads used to EDM
3. Outkast's gap in releases that would've kept them "relevant" kind of hindered the enthusiasm.

With that being said...my semi-old ass would've enjoyed it because I know their whole catalog.

It could have been better. Dre seemed bored at times... and he felt like his mic was too low (not sure why he didn't use a wireless mic like Big Boi). I didn't have a problem with the songs, but I just thought it lacked the energy I was expecting.

To be honest, it was both sides. I loved the show because of all the hits and seeing Outkast back together. But, the crowd was dead like they were tired and then Andre started reacting like fuck it, I'll do whatever I want since yall ain't vibin.

I did see the Nas performance and the crowd had a totally different energy. You can't compare that crowd to Outkast crowd because it was a different night.

I thought it was a dope performance.

What I saw:

Andre had energy in the beginning of the performance, but the crowd didn't reciprocate it, so he got bummed out.

I loved the band. SpottieOttieDopalicious was LIVE. When the crowd didn't go crazy for that, I knew these weren't real Kast fans.

I didn't care for the screen thing because it was like they were being caged. It might've killed the energy also.

Andre's singing was wack but he's not a singer so it's cool. But still, they should've worked around that.

I also hated the DJ scratching on some of the songs. Like he was scratching on "Prototype" and it was totally out of place.

Other than those things, I loved it. I would've loved to have been there in a crowd full of real Kast fans.

I see...you can tell the difference..3k is in costume, they got hype men running around, their banter is much more lively. But again that was like 12 YEARS ago..

clearly both of them are in a different head space today as as well as just plain older. :smh:
