Excellent post. We're so far behind that it's hard to ignore the writing on the wall.

The next 100 years will be a gradual decline here.
I don't know if it will take 100 years. China, India and Japan are producing armies of engineers and scientists. Children in the US are behind these countries in education also. Panic is already setting in.

We're building a wall instead a high speed anything.I took the trailway twice,it was just as expensive and took twice as long and making pit stops is annoying as hell, going thru towns that don't have a train station, located in swampy wooded areas, having a conductor who would rather be late than early ,being on a train full of drunks, kids, elderly people and weirdo's for days is no fun,I'll drive.

Behold the "conservative" agenda - sell out to the corporations (read: the ultra-rich) because they provide the means (money) to control the media and bamboozle the people into thinking the best way to run a democracy is to turn it over to the most greedy and rapacious among us.

It just doesn't make sense. Especially on the east and west coast. It would solve a lot of the high cost of living issue with workers. People can live in Richmond, VA and get take the train to DC or Baltimore to work. Or Portland to Seattle. etc, etc.

The reason we don’t have high speed rails is not because of ‘politics’, it’s because the government would have to take all the land around the rails and destroy all the housing/farms on it.

It would cost billions of dollars.

In China they basically take the land and give the finger and a few pennies to the owner.

Anyone that has taken trains across states realize just how many homes are right next to the train tracks. All those homes, and those in the surrounding areas would have to be destroyed.

Given how our population expects some fairness out of government, it’s not possible.

The game in the USA is to not improve, just try to unlevel the playing field. Why would I ever need to get better when I can oppress other people. Mediocrity is weeded out when the competition has the same resources. Ego, nepotism and greed are the reason we aren't outpacing those countries in tech.

Its so expensive is because everybody want to eat of it being built and you only get to build it once. The Lady was even explaining it on how you got to deal with private property people, power companies, other railroads.. existing freeways, environmentalist and so own.. I live in Cali and work for the Railroad and have just watch how much shit the whole program has went through went lawsuits and shit just so everyone could get money off the building of it.. If there is 1 place whom really needs this it is Cali.. believe me.if it was not for all the Bullshit this project would be damn near finish with at least phase 1 from when it first was passed to be developed.. China does not go through that shit.. they say this is it then build it period.. Hell they even built as Cities before they had the people to live in it.. I will post a link.. 1 of the trains in the clip actually goes right buy 1 of them.. Another thing is Passenger Rail out here is ran buy a bunch of fucking idiots.. They have a few really good people but besides that this are people here to just get checks, not business minded but its seems to be slowly changing. With the traffic issues and Airport crowding this is actually a must. Any of you that have been to another country with HSR would know that But hopefully somehow it happens... and by the way at the 10:07 and 14:22 marks that is Actually my train.. It's Train #4 the Southwest Chief Leaving from Los Angeles Headed for Chicago and points in between. We are crossing from the Metrolink River sub over the Los Angeles River to the BNSF San Bernardino sub on what we call the Fly Over.. So I kinda just a little know what im talking about..

Couldn't agree more!

I would also like to add that right now the highway system that our transport trucks rely on is neglected and crumbling. Even worse, this is the same infrastructure much of our military would have to rely on if the country was ever attacked.

While HSR from San Francisco to Los Angeles would revolutionize the country the highways have to be taken care of first.

So true.. goes for the roads and the bridges also.. Funny thing is that the government which is controlled by the most rich and powerful will spend 150,000,000 per plane for a F-22 Raptor to make sure they maintain control calling it defense. Naw that is fucking offense..

There is so much that could and should be done for national defense that isn't..

The next thing is making sure all first responders, government buildings, and eventually private homes, have the ability to generate and store at least 48 hours worth of electricity. If any entity attacks the USA they'll try to take out the fragile power grid before the roads. I suspect that America's enemies have already done test runs on it.

Fam, it's really the Generation of the "Baby Boomers" they are too self-absorbed.......Speaking from a Euro descendant deduction ....The First American Generations of the 16 and 1700's left a new Country for the following Generation, that Generation left land for their children's children for farming and internal growth to inherit and yes Slavery in the 18 and the 1900's, The Generation after that left the Industrial Revolution...with our big assembly lines and mega Corporations, the Baby Boomers caught and benefitted from the tail end of this but what have the people born in the late 1940s to the 1960s left for the next generation ? Trillions of dollars in debt a fractured nation and a perpetual distrust in the Government who can't seem to solve the Nations basic problems of "Internal Infrastructure", Poverty, Education, Social Security, and a widening Racial Divide. This curse is left upon us from the nature of the Baby Boomers who are mostly the "My" Generation and not the "Me" Generation. My Constitutional Rights, My Freedoms, My money, not My problem yo! a High-Speed Rail System? How will that help them, they are too selfish to invest in it, and so here we are with No High-Speed Rail System for the next Generation and Trillions of Dollars in debt.

But this is simply not true. Every city and little town in the US has several railroads. All high speed rail would ever need is the equivalent of two lanes
of traffic; one going one way, the other going in the opposite direction. Except for the short bit of the railway that penetrate the cities to get to the
central stations, most of the high speed rail would be in lowly populated areas going from city to city. It would pass over farm land, or land owned
by the various types of governments that operate in the US. Land procurement is the least of the concerns. You are using the arguments that mitigate
the expansion of light rail within the same metro areas as if they apply to a form transportation that is better compared to airtravel and interstate
commuting. Houston and Dallas are talking about making a highspeed line that would reduce the commuting time between the two to a mere 90
minutes, even with stopping at Colleg Station...

The reason why rail travel in the US is bad is because General Motors wants you to by millions of cars every. Before WW2, railway travel was common
in the US, but there after, the car companies of Detroit bought up the passenger part of rail travel, and systematically deassembled it, and shortly thereafter
Eisenhower created the interstate system, and that was one of the final nails on the coffin.

For me, if i had the choice to fly somewhere or take a train, i elect to fly. I'm from Michigan living in Atlanta and a ticket back to my home state might be $120 or so round trip most days and takes about 1.5hrs nonstop.

Unless that high speed train can best that price and time, I'm uninterested. As with most things, supply and demand determines what gets done. Not all the time, but most.

And as someone already started, eminent domain would take place on a massive scale would because everything around the rails would have to be seized or bought. Then people would be crying about property being taken... Blah blah blah.

You are almost damned if you do and damned if you don't. I don't like the process of traveling and prefer to be involved with the mode of traveling as less as possible. I'm about the destination and a train ain't fucking with an airplane...which is the preferred long distance transportation method here in the states. If the train can travel at least 500mph, then they might have something....assuming it is cost effective, which it likely wouldn't be.

America had passenger rail service all over the country.

The major railroads like Union Pacific and Sante Fe along with others dominated the country.

What happened was after WW2, the auto industry lobbied Congress hard to get people off trains into cars

That is why it was so easy for Eisenhower, a Republican to get Congress to add a gas tax to fund the Interstate/ highway bill.

Once Americans switched from trains to cars, the railroads said Fuck it, and spent their time concentrating on freight.
