Whats the "old formula" they're referring to?

I like most Assassin's Creed games and ordered the deluxe version already off Amazon.

I personally liked Assassin's Creed Unity and Syndicate most in the city settings with the grappling hook but it seems I was in the minority.

I guess I fall somewhere in between then.

I prefer the older formula games but wouldn't want to sacrifice the open world concept and especially not the time.
