In an effort to protect customers from pirated software (and protect the company’s bottom line) Microsoft has announced that it is to expand Office Genuine Advantage and Software Protection Platform.

Here’s the meat of the announcement made by Keith Beeman general manager or Genuine Software Initiative:

First, we expanded the Office Genuine Advantage Notifications program into 13 more countries, upping the total to 41 countries where the voluntary program offers end users enhanced protection against the risks of using non-genuine copies of Office, such as viruses and malfunctioning code.

In addition, we announced that Office 2010 will offer technology managers new tools, built on our Software Protection Platform (SPP), to better control how volume-licensing keys are activated and used as they roll out Office 2010 in their organizations. The introduction of SPP into Office 2010 will also make it harder for counterfeiters to defraud consumers by selling inferior, bogus copies of Office, as the product will have technical features that make the program harder to pirate.

Why the push?

Piracy hurts local economies by taking money away from legitimate businesses that sell or support software.

Purchasers of pirated software often discover they are missing key tools needed to make their software function properly, such as user manuals, product support, certificates of authenticity and sometimes even critical lines of code.

Also, pirated software can be highly vulnerable to malicious code, like viruses and spyware, that damage computers and put personal and proprietary business information at risk.

I buy the bit about piracy harming the economy (though I suspect that the the biggest hit is being taken by Microsoft), but the whole missing tools, missing lines of code and malware bit seems over the top to me. Sure, it’s a good thing to give people confidence that the software they have installed on their PCs is genuine and properly licensed, but the initiatives that Microsoft is rolling out is more about finding bogus installs than it is about preventing installations from being illegally activated.

Once someone’s been sold an illegal copy of Office (or Windows for that matter) then the damage, whether it be to the economy or the purchaser, has already been done.

I already buy legally from the bigbox store. I don't mess with illegal software, cd's nor videogames, blu-ray movies etc etc. Kats deal with pirated software and than cry like bitches when they get a gift called a virus. You should enjoy your virus. Its a gift for doing wrong.

If You buy legally You won't have to worry about a virus, re-up the sofware etc etc.

I love buying content legally from the bigbox store and local music shop.

They've been saying this shit for years. Windows 7 has already been cracked and hasn't even been released yet to the public for retail purchase. When will they understand that the same people they got working for them are the same that release the protection codes to the hackers.

I dont even try to fight viruses anymore, making a periodic back-up and doing a 15 minute restore with some software like this will have your PC running again in no time..........glad I didnt have to pay for it either.

Sony BMG Settles Rootkit Scandal with Two States

Foxtrotrootkit
Sony BMG has settled cases with California and Texas that were brought following the revelation that some of the label’s CDs (full list) came with rootkit software that automatically installed itself onto users’ Windows PCs, allowing Sony BMG — and other hackers — to monitor and even seize control of users’ computers.

Each state will receive $750,000 in civil penalties and costs. I’m not clear on how that money is supposed to make it to people who’s computers were damaged by one of these CDs (maybe another "fried egg"-style public relations campaign… "this is your PC on Sony?").

However, users who wish do file a claim can do so here.
If your computer was infected by the XCP variant, you get a new copy ofthat CD and $7.50 plus either one or three album downloads from SonyConnect, Apple iTunes, or Wal-Mart. For the MediaMax variant, you geteither a free digital version of the CD (for MediaMax 3.0) or a digitalversion and a second digital album (version 5.0). Either way, you havea new reason to fear copyright protection.

The deadline for filing a claim is 12/31/2006. In the meantime, victims of either software can still download fixes that are supposed to uninstall MediaMax or XCP — trying to remove them yourself can apparently damage your computer. (This part is not news, but people might need a reminder, with only a week and a half left to file a claim.)

The news today was that Sony BMG also owes California and Texas alittle over $1.5 million for installing this malware, which seems likea slap on the wrist. What if government employees had played one ofthese CDs on a computer with sensitive data on it?

Here’s a tip for buying CDs: examine the packaging closely. If you don’t see the CD logo, the "music disc" you’re buying almost certainly contains some sort of DRM (although I doubt any label will try installing rootkits like these any time soon).
