Royce Gracie vs undefeated Kung fu fighter in underground MMA Fight

they used some of these in the ufc retrospective that aired over the thanksgiving holiday.

there are many.

you can tell how many hot air frauds (boastful, unsubstantiated fight records) the gracie family exposed and videotaped over the years by the way many of the opponents conducted themselves.

Totally agree. It's basically like an 80s or 90s bully getting Worldstar-styled on by a smaller, smarter dude back in the VHS days :D

my favorite was the opponent who, instead of tapping out, decided he was gonna try to strike the balls repeatedly to break the submission.

I was always shocked Royce lost to this dude who could not cut it in Pride:

Also, I remember reading in Ring magazine that Helio Gracie challenged Joe Louis back in the day and that Royce challenged Mile Tyson as well. I'm surprised Tyson has not spoken on this unless it was rumors, thoug these videos make it seem very possible.

Dude was a beast but he was the Jeremy Lin of UFC and the Gracies were paying and orchestrating mismatches to stay on top.
Shamrock
Severn
Kimo all made names off of him but only because they had grown man strength over his technique.

During the hype there was a grappler that exposed the guard. I forget his name but he would wait for the opponent to commit and lift them off the mat, almost over his head, still in the guard, and bodyslam them back to the mat on their head. They immediately gave him a heavyweight for his next fight to get him out.

i don't know about the joe louis claim, but i can verify the mike tyson one. it was at the time when the gracie family was trying to blow up and grow their name. unsuspecting opponents would dismiss them and acquiesce to the gracie rules.

of course, put the shoe on the other foot (make the gracies compete under the other discipline's rules) and they become equally vulnerable.

wasn't that more a consequence of the brutal tournament style though?

gracies defeated plenty of opponents with the weight "disadvantage", but put grueling matches back to back (to back) and any competitor can fall victim to fatigue.

and for the record, i am in favor of NO weight classes in MMA.

But now more people are trained in BJJ. But you're right, a lot of people don't know how tiring that shit is. It looks like they are just laying and playing around, but there is a lot of mental and physical work being done. I really hate how they changed the game to make MMA more mainstream. I don't like fighters being stood up.

We already have that with the 205 and over class. Yet cats are busting their asses to compete at 205 even though they walk around much heavier and could fight in the open heavy division.

I was exposed to MMA by watching Rickson Gracie vids in Brazil... the Gracies really pushed the sport

that's 1 reason why i enjoyed PRIDE much more than (later) UFC.

open weight tournament. and even after they came up with the 10kg rule, it was still great as long as the match didn't go the distance.

As far as hand picking there fights I heard a rumor some years back that Matt Hume was going to enter the early UFC's, but the gracies kept him out as he was a Catch wrestler, so he knew about the submissions.
