The Western adaptation of the iconic cyberpunk manga and anime seriesGhost in the Shell has entered production—and with that news, we have our first look at Scarlett Johansson in the lead role as Major Motoko Kusanagi.

The star of Masamune Shirow’s smash hit manga—translated into an iconic animated series by Production I.G. in serveral series and OVAs over the past 20 years—Kusanagi is the cybernetically-enhanced head of counter-terrorist organization Public Security Section 9, operating in a dystopic 21st century Japan.

It still bothers us a lot that this role isn’t being played by an Asian actor—but at least the the shot released of Johansson captures the vibe of Shirow’s dark world pretty decently. Hey the ethnicity of the lead character doesn’t matter as long as they got the hairstyle right, right? Ugh.

Directed by Snow White and the Huntsman’s Rupert Sanders, Ghost in the Shell is expected to release on March 31st, 2017.

They could have at least changed the name to something more Western. This just looks even more stupid.
Of course I'm going to watch it... but I'm not happy about this obvious cash grab.

I am in no way defending white washing. But a lot of people ignore the fact that just about all Japanese anime characters are drawn as European including those from this series. The Japanese IMO have deeper self image issues due to their relationship with white supremacy.

While, that's true..most Japanese manga writers have always consider their characters Japanese.

:hithead:

i still think Rinko(Pacific Rim) wouldve been better..

at least they didnt cast Channing Tatum as Batou(which was rumored)

I get it but if they had chosen some no name Asian chic for the lead it wouldn't appeal to the American market. The only people who would see it would be fans of the anime.

There are tons of actresses. The majority of the American market doesn't even know what this is. And there will never be minorities who can sell tickets if they never give anyone a chance.

like you said most Americans don't know what Ghost in a Shell is, which is why you need a known actress for the lead. Asians do have it worst than African Americans in Hollywood though, when was the last time you saw an American movie with a Asian lead actor.

While I agree that an Asian actress, more specifically, a Japanese actress, is preferred, I am not bent out of shape about it in this case because the subject in question is a human concious that has been downloaded into numerous bodies or "shells" sice the womb. She has even take on male shells, so that of a white female is no big deal to me.

My issue is how bad are they going to fuck it up.

Its a Scarlet Johanson movie of course its going to be shitty

Scarlett Johansson’s First ‘Ghost In The Shell’ Look Revealed — But Fans Aren’t Thrilled
“Gosh, where could we possibly find a Japanese actress who kicks ass?”

Paramount and Dreamworks Pictures released the first look image of Scarlett Johansson in the upcoming film “Ghost in the Shell” on Thursday.

The actress will star as Major Motoko Kusanagi, a special ops human-cyborg hybrid, in the live-action adaptation of the popular Japanese anime series. In the broody shot, she sports a dark-hued angled bob, her gaze fixed at an unseen point in the distance.

Some fans expressed excitement at the reveal, but many more announced their displeasure. The primary question on people’s lips: Again, why is a white woman playing the protagonist in an adaption of a Japanese series?

Since the news last year of Johansson’s casting as Motoko Kusanagi, fans have been calling for the film’s producers to hire someone else for the role.

A Care2 petition entitled “DreamWorks: Stop whitewashing Asian characters” has garnered more than 65,000 signatures to date.

“What concerns me is the fact that minority actors are so rarely given opportunities in big-budget leading roles,” petition author Julie Rodriguez said in a press release last year. “It’s a self-defeating cycle: Hollywood insists viewers won’t be drawn unknown minority actors, but they’re never given the chance to break out of a narrow set of background roles to prove themselves. ‘Ghost in the Shell’ could have been a perfect opportunity to buck this trend, but instead promising actresses are being passed over.”

Several actresses have been pinpointed as possible replacements for Johansson, including Chiaki Kuriyama, the Japanese actress and model who starred in “Kill Bill: Volume 1;” and Rinko Kikuchi, the Japanese actress who was nominated for an Oscar for her work in the 2006 film “Babel.”

The so-called white-washing of Asian characters in Hollywood is hardly a new phenomenon.

Emma Stone was infamously cast to play a half-Hawaiian/Chinese character in Cameron Crowe’s film “Aloha”; and in the upcoming Marvel movie “Doctor Strange,” Tilda Swinton will play “The Ancient One” — who, in the comic book, is an old Tibetan man.

It's an absolute outrage that they could not find a qualified cyborg actress for this role.

And yes. I also agree they should've had an asian actor for the role.. else every issue at the Oscars and what Chris Rock says is all true. Which they already are.

And if they really want an American cast. Ron Perlman would suit well as her partner. Badass.. and stereotype of a big american.

But yah... well who knows. It may turn out good. Im not going to criticize something before seeing the end result. But i wonder if they will do a tribute of Origa having her music play in the background as an easter egg in some parts.

I expect the live action Ghost in the Shell to go over about as well as the live action Neon Genesis Evangelion... er... Pacific Rim did.

At least Rinko did a decent job as Rei Ayanami.

No offense but virtually all manga/anime characters are drawn as white characters so it seems only logical to cast a white actor. Time for asians to finally stop with the self-hate and actually draw asian characters (e.g. see Akira).

Beat me to it. I noticed a large number of European looking characters when I first got into anime. I never fully understood the reason, but now I'm just used to it.

They should have tried for asian actresses. There are plenty who could have been so much better for the role. In remakes and other incantations of this, sure Scarlett can try it. But after they tried with asian actresses first. At least try.

In last year’s Ridley Scott film “The Martian,” white actress MacKenzie Davis starred as Mindy Park, who’s identified as a Korean-American scientist in the book the movie was based on.

‘Ghost in the Shell’ Producers Reportedly Tested Visual Effects That Would Make White Actors Appear Asian

“Multiple independent sources close to the project” told the site that Paramount Pictures and DreamWorks commissioned Lola VFX, the company behind Brad Pitt’s age manipulation in The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, to perform a series of VFX tests. These test sought to shift Johansson’s ethnicity in post-production to make her appear Asian in the film. Fortunately, an insider clarified to ScreenCrush that these tests were immediately rejected upon review, but the problem is that there were seemingly enough voices behind the scenes that believed this to be a good idea in the first place.

Paramount released the following statement, which confirms the tests, but denies they were related to Johansson, even though ScreenCrush sources maintain her character was the specific focus.

:smh:

Those japanese chicks are too scrawny. And SJ got that husky voice. At the end of the day I really don't give a fuck.

Just like in countless other anime tv shows.....the main character always looked like a caucasian to me. So I really do not see what the deal is.

Oh, yeah she had an Asian name.

Big deal....get over it Jappers!

I take it I'm the only person here who watches anime and sees the characters as Japanese because that is how they see themselves which is not with slanted eyes. In most anime that is.
