Google Wifi System, Router Replacement for Whole-Home Coverage $100 at Walmart.com

Fuck it

I just copped it

Was fighting with the decision because I'm about to look into whether I can get a modem with wifi built in from xfinity.

But just in case I ordered one of these in case after talking with xfinity this it is the best option. If this isn't the best option I will just not pick it up. I choose store pick up at check out. It'll be ready later today.

The xfinity modem router combo is shit with very few options, use it as a modem only and get your own wireless router.

how much data does google collect on these devices??

None, other than how to optimize your setup. That info is kept in the cloud. Over time your performance may actually increase as the system gets smarter. This price is a little low so you are probably only getting one node. Depending on the size of your home you may need two nodes or more. The advantage here is adding additional nodes is pretty much plug and play. The devices will optimize coverage based on their location in the home.

No way I will give google that much access to my crib.

Do you own an Android based phone? Or ever use Google? Google would already has a shitload information about you if they ever chose to go that route. If they do go that route fortunately they are a business and they are only trying to make money. But Google seems cool though. They have a lot of services that make peoples lives easier. The Google search engine, Youtube, Andriod OS, Google Maps, Google Play, Nest Learning Thermostat, etc.

No I don't use Android or Apple phones. I have an android tablet but it was activated with a bullshit google account. I have z wave automation products and use Microsoft services for mapping and bing for searches. Google is nefarious bro and I don't trust them at all. I don't trust any electronic/computer companies for that matter. Also, PIA VPN is a must have.

I'm curious. What web browser do you use?

I have this and have had it awhile. I like it. I also have Google home. This even makes a wifi for your guest so they don't connect to your house wifi. It gives you a lot of options. I would recommend it.

Does google know that I am kogalee who is a student of the Honorable Elijah Muhammad and that I teach that the white man is the devil, for a living?

No....but they do know that you're a moron that posts on B.G.O.L. and have set up alerts for a million mofos to know what n when you post so that they can laff their fucking asses off at you !!!

.

I'm curious as to why?

Leaving your IP address public leaves you vulnerable to not just hackers, but your Internet Service Provider and any third parties. Say you download a song or movie and the entity that owns the copyright to that intellectual property obtains a lot of all of the people's IP address that downloaded the file, they can request legal action be taken against you. More likely, they contact your ISP and they threaten to cancel your service or you have to pay a fee for violating their TOS. That's just one example.

$30 bucks a year is miniscule compared to the protection it gives you and your family online. Respect

Awesome!!!

Thanks pretty cheap to give google all the data passing through that router on your browsing habits

Being on bgol alone is enough reason to use a VPN. Your IP address is public which means you're vulnerable. Doesn't have anything to do with pirating.

They don't need to. They already have it by you viewing this thread.

Exactly! Google has reached that level, "how much Google do I want in my life?" Same thing with Amazon. I researched an item on Amazon on my cell phone. Suddenly I'm seeing that item I researched appearing on my tablet and laptop. These 2 companies have become far too invasive.

That's just retargeting. Something that Lowe's and grocery stores like Food Lion have been doing for years. It's not nefarious. I use it myself.

If you don't use a VPN then you're already fucked.

Even using a VPN (most aren't setup right) isn't enough. You're still processing javascript and Flash client side, your browser is probably loaded with "evercookies", your DNS ASN doesn't match the VPN network and you have HTML5 Canvas, WebGL, & WebRTC fingerprinting to worry about. It's not like they don't know the IP address ranges of all the VPN service providers out there.

The Brave browser alleviates a lot of that but you're right. Still way better than being naked on the net with no protection.
