The last Plex update made it unusable. What do y'all know about Embry?

So Plex did an update a week or two ago and the interface is trash. I was able to get it to work on one tv, but the other tv is a no go, even after updating everything, and forcing settings for lower streaming rates, etc. It's hard to read on one tv, and it reboots the roku player it is attached to after 1-2 minutes. The replacement being suggested on the Plex forums is Embry. https://emby.media/ Does anyone here have any experience with it who can tell me how it compares to Plex (when it actually worked)?

Are you using it for just movies? Or are you doing live TV too?

*nevermind, just saw you were using in on a Roku. I have no experience with them.

I use Plex on PS3 and they aren't going to update that version any time soon because it is a dead console at this point..

When it comes to Plex on media boxes and sticks, I set it to never automatically update because Plex updates have been hit or miss.

I don't know if there is an option for that. On my PC it doesn't update unless I do it, but I thought the roku version was pushed out automatically. People in that Plex thread are asking for a way to roll back or get a classic version. There used to be a classic version, I had on a second player it to be able to access a different PC before I got the roku tv.

You probably using an old Roku player

You need to get something new with more power and not a stick

Either a new Roku 4k or nvidia shield/Apple TV 4k

If is for a second room and you don’t care if is a Little slow you could get one of the new cheaper Rokus

It's in my bedroom. It's not an HDtv and all the newer boxes require an HD connection from what I've seen.

What you use the app or DLNA on PS3 ?

I just tested DLNA and works really fast and direct plays the movies on PS3
The app I’m guessing is slow but I haven’t tried it

Try the DNLA it should be there automatically without you doing anything under the video options if the Ps3 is in the same house as the plex server
Is much faster

I actually just got this for a crt tv that I use for retro gaming , has both rca and hdmi ports
Is about the same speed as a Roku 3 and that’s 5 years old now but works

I went from playing Mario to watching forensic files on Netflix
The speed is fine for a second tv

Thanks. The one I'm using is actually a roku 2 XD. I have another one I can hook up, but I think it has issues from time to time playing sound from MKV files. It might be newer than the one I'm using tho. It lets me add a sd card to expand memory.

Now that I think about it, I do remember using the DNLA before Plex made an app for game consoles.

Plex first made an app for the PS4 and Xbox One and then about a year later they pushed out their app for the PS3 and X360..

But I remember being able to access my plex server from the PS3 with no issue and playback was great.

I think at the time, everybody was so hyped up on having a clean, crisp set up and Plex allowed you to have that with little effort

The XMB had gotten a bit old by that time, although these days I appreciate it's functionality because I use a version of it in Retroarch daily.

I had to put more ram in my plex media server because of latency.

Testing Emby as I post this and the playback is beautiful but I keep getting notifications about unlimited playback, if you have to pay for unlimited playback, Plex wins by default

Me too when I tried it earlier this year. I thought it was going to stop working after awhile so I went back to Plex.

I liked Emby's interface better, tho. Plex be fuckin' up titles and shit.

Plex is hit or miss sometime I use it before trips so I can have my library on the road. But last trip I imported about 100 cds and they all had the same album cover when Plex brought them in. Haven't played with latest update but when I run into errors I delete library and import fresh

Reading now,

I'm seeing that it's $5 to unlock the app.

I'm trying to see if that applies to stuff like live TV, which I don't need or affects streaming, which I do need.

Well Plex did another update a couple of days after I posted this, so my TV attached to the player is back to working again on the old interface. Hopefully they don't break it again.
