My grandmother was supposed to be black and Native American. She had dark skin and long, straight hair, which is often stereotypically associated with Native American women. But guess what? I took a DNA test, and the results were shocking. I’m 95% African 5% European and 0% Native American. My older cousin couldn’t believe the results, so my father, who is her uncle, decided to take a DNA test too. And guess what he found? He had the same results as me. It turns out that my grandmother’s “Native” looks came from the horrors of slavery and Jim Crow.
