My mom had a similarly scary incident in 2020. Right before her 70th birthday she broke her hip being active at her local park. Had the surgery and experienced a blood clot in recovery. Had a blood transfusion. She asked us kids to do her a favor and become blood donors moving forward, as there's always a need.
Fortunately she took the rehab / recovery very seriously and hasn't had any issues since. She's always been active. Lots of walking. Some gym time earlier in the 2010s. Part of a dragonboat team the past 15 years.
Definitely had me worried when she texted me from the hospital during the pandemic awaiting surgery, with no guests allowed. 5 hours away in her city.

I had to give my grandmother some blood after she got her surgery back then. I'm only giving blood to my family and nobody else.
I used to donate blood back then when I was in trade school. I believe I still have my blood donor card.
But if my family ever needs blood, I would always be there to help them with that donating my blood to them.
