why did the transition from the 80's to 90's hip hop go so smooth?

Run dmc, big daddy kane, rakim, public enemy, 2 live crew, mc shy d, king tee, etc, had no complaints when nas, 2 pac, biggie, jay-z, scarface, nwa, redman, snoop dogg, wu-tang, outkast, a tribe called quest , etc took over the reigns after them.

why are the 90's rappers giving the y2k rappers so much trouble coming into the game.

Because we were too young to talk about shit like "transitions" and just accepted what was shoved on us as long as we could nod our heads... :D

now we are stuck in ignorance

maybe because after the 90s rap stop being so inclusive..all those groups and people you mentioned where from completely different genres in rap music..from party rap, storytellers, hardcore (before gangsta) etc. They all shared the same stage and there was no hate like there is today.

Hardcore rappers like (ironically) Ice T didn't dog comic rappers like Young MC..storytellers like Slick Rick didn't dog party rappers like Heavy D.

On a Soul Train Award show back in the early 90s the Best Rap catogory listed: Arrested Development, Big Daddy Kane, Heavy D and the Boyz, MC Brains..

what do you have there..conscious rap, percusor to the Baller rap, party rap..

You'd NEVER see that kind of across the board diversity in a rap award catogory again..

Wow.

i was getting some gas yesterday in Koreatown and this car pulled up in the station blasting fucking rap music... all i heard from their car was... "bitch sucking my dick and fuck these hoes and bitches..."

- the car turned off, the door opened...and two fat black hood rat bitches walked out.

it was the fat black ghetto hoes with the two-colored braided hair.

no its not all we care about, but we do discuss it leisurely
so when I get on the internet in my leisure time, its a chance I'm going to address some hip hop topics,
and it obvious you dont even listen to rap
because you would know there are different styles of it and not all of it is vulgar or degrading.

now get yo ass out the thread if you tired of rap.

The fact is that the most of the greatest lyricists/rappers of the late nineties are dead, Tupac, Biggie, Big L, and Big Pun. These cats were really 'bout to turn it up on dudes and never got the chance to keep it going. They would have stepped up the lyrical ante on dudes. But Eminem stepped in, got the sales and put out 50 Cent. And most young brothers who start out spittin usually emulate someone starting out. They had no Big around or Pun or L or even Pac, they wasn't trying to imitate no white boy, so alot of knowledge got lost. Brothers from Down South started doing their thing and alot of kids from other places started to imitate them in lyrical style and production......shit is just fucked up right now. But there's still hope when u got Nas and Ra 'bout to drop albums, Eminem working with Premiere, it's still alive.

It's funny we had a period like this in the real early nineties when everyone and their mother was trying to imitate West Coast rap and cats from all over was saying that the West fucked up the game by flooding the market with bullshit but it was just their time to shine. And the underground started to flourish and produce cats like Nas, Jay-Z, Biggie, DMX, Wu- Tang....shit always comes full circle, this perioed is just a lull in the action as I see it, it'll come full circle again.

why are the 90's rappers giving the y2k rappers so much trouble coming into the game.

Because it's hard when you're being replaced by inferior talent.

You have to remember that anyone and everyone can be a rapper nowadays. That wasn't really the case in a good portion of the 90's as major corporations hadn't gotten involved yet. You had to be good for people to take you seriously. There definitely were exceptions to that rule, that would eventually become the norm in today's game. Now that corporations have gotten involved, they're putting out anyone that they believe can sell an image and connect to an audience. And for the lucky rapper that gets the chance to shine in today's game they have more revenue streams at their disposal: ring tones, clothing, club hosting, etc, etc. A lot of older cats have become bitter at not having the opportunity. That being said, a lot of 90's cats were also bad businessmen as well. They were label focused and concentrated on getting a deal instead of crossing the t's and dotting the i's of that deal. They have their own selves to blame.

I would say that most of it stems from money. As the 80's transitioned into the 90's the focus continued to be on the craft as opposed to a record's sales potential because, aside from Sugarhill Gang or Run DMC, very few artists ever sold huge amounts of albums. Additionally, diversity of representation in the market was still important. There have almost always been gimmicking acts in Hip Hop, but they were NOT the only acts to be successful. Today it's harder to establish yourself outside of the "underground" and get a record deal unless you make 1-hit-wonder music. It's all very shortsighted now ... artist development does not exist @ most labels.

I'm assuming that these recent threads have alot to do with Soulja Boy and Ice-T going back-and-forth. Number 1: Ice-T is a fukkin' OG in the game and should be too mature to be picking and continuing an online fight with a child and is giving him more credit than he deserves. Number 2: Soulja Boy's core argument in response to Ice-T, the whole "He's too old" thing is a perfect example of how, not just Hip Hop, but much of American Black society as a whole is entirely too comfortable with dismissing our elders and deeming them and their accomplishments as irrelevant.

A large reason that people outside of Hip Hop don't respect the artform is because WE have not only failed to institute, but have actively worked against setting our own artistsic standards. Like, if a person can't sing, whether or not you(the listener)are a trained vocalist, you can tell if they are off key or tone deaf and can state that opinion decisively. With Hip Hop, it's always all good and niggas can't tell others that anything is trash because that is immediately written off as "hating". Now, of course there are people who just talk shit because they got lips, but there are also people who analyze the music for real and are capable of offering substantial and constructive critiques.

This isn't about a difference in styles or even regions, it's about defining ourselves, our music and our culture. I don't care what outsiders think about our music, but the amount of conversations like this is a testament to the internal conflict that we share and is evidence that we've gotta set some shit straight. As far as Soulja Boy goes ... it is what it is, but he is NOT the type of Hip Hop artist that I want representing my lifestyle and my movement. Shit comes and goes, but when even an infamous dickrider like Funkmaster Flex starts speaking out about the erosion of the culture and devotes the 9PM hour every weekenight to playin' joints from the 90's, you KNOW that something's up yo.

Kanye's defense of the lil homie does raise some valid points, but once he spoke negatively against sampling ... the very method of production that gave him relevance in the 1st place ... his stance lost some credibility. Shiiiiiiiiiit, Kanye aint the voice of Hip Hop either ... it's a collective voice. I'm from Brooklyn and him acting like he introduced the world to Ralph Lauren Polo is some bullshit for real ... that's another story though. Basically, diversity is the key and we need to support the artists that mean something to us. I think that the generational and regional transitions seem that much rougher now because every single grievance is instantly broadcast to the world and floats around the internet forever, like cyberspace debris ... lol. It is what it is.

Peace

because back then the 90s rappers had respect for the 80s rappers. And also when they came thru with the "nu-school" hip hop they elevated the game. these new rappers are wack and are copies of one and another. Some not all don't have any respect for the older hip hop generation.

And when the FUCK did CLEVELAND BECOME DOWN SOUTH?:smh:

Have you ever even listened to Big Pun and Big L? IT's a fact that they are two of the illest lyricists ever, back then and now. Biggie is one of the greatest all-around artisits in hip hop, it's a FACT. I don't even think u understood my comment, go back and read. Better yet, read this......

PUN
Yo, I'm walkin' waters
spit fire and shit Häagen-Dazs
idolize no man like Conan and stand beside the Bronx
be larger than life, twice as nice as ya idol
pump you with pride, then guide you str8 to hell like the bible
I'm lible to start manipulatin' minds infiltrate and climb
out the pitfalls of life enticed with nickle plated nine
it seems every time I dream I'm in a nightmare
I fiend to live in a world where mothers are queens
and men would fight fair
[Fat Joe: Hell Yea!] I wish I could, I wish I could
live off a gat this whole damn world aint shit not just the hood
I'd change my life make my wife forget the tears
from the pain and physical abuse, give her back her best years
grab my chest hairs, pound my fist on the hard cement
spark the scent, and cloud the sky till my heart's content
repent, and thou shall be forgiven
how can we be proud to live in a world
which condems man, child, and women?

BIG L
Yo, fuck all the glamours and glitz, I plan to get rich
I'm from New York and never was a fan of the Knicks
And I'm all about expandin my chips
You mad cause I was in the van with your bitch
with both hands on her tits
Corleone hold the throne, that you know in your heart
I got style, plus the way that I be flowin is sharp
A while back I used to hustle, sellin blow in the park
Countin G stacks and rockin ice that glow in the dark
Forever - hottie huntin, trigger temper I'm quick to body somethin
You lookin at me like I'm probably frontin
I fuck around and throw, three in your chest and flee to my rest
I'm, older and smarter this is me at my best
I stopped hangin around y'all, cause niggaz like you
be prayin on my downfall, hopin I flop
Hopin I stop, you probably even hope I get locked
or be on the street corner with a pipe, smokin the rock
I got more riches than you, fuck more bitches than you
Only thing I haven't got is more, stitches than you
Fuckin punk, you ain't a +Leader+ what? Nobody +Follow-ed+ you
You was never shit, your mother shoulda swallowed you
(Mmmm.. WHOO!) You on some tagalong flunkie yes man shit
Do me a favor, please get off the next man dick
And if you think I can't fuck with whoever, put your money up
Put your jewels up, no fuck it put your honey up
Put your raggedy house up nigga, or shut your mouth up
before I buck lead, and make a lot of blood shed
Turn your tux red, I'm far from broke, got enough bread
And mad hoes, ask Beavis I get nuttin Butt-head
{*laughter*} My game is, vicious and cruel
Fuckin chicks is a rule
If my girl think I'm loyal then that bitch is a fool
How come, you can listen to my first album
and tell where a lot of niggaz got they whole style from?
(YEAH!) So what you actin for?
You ain't half as raw, you need to practice more
Somebody tell this nigga sum'un, 'fore I crack his jaw
You runnin with boys, I'm runnin with men
I'ma be rippin the mics until I'm a hundred and ten
Have y'all niggaz like, "Damnit this nigga done done it again"
I throw slugs at idi-ots, no love for city cops
I sport a pretty watch, eight-hundred and fifty rocks
I'm makin wonderful figures
I don't fuck with none of you niggaz
I might pull out this gun on your niggaz
and rob every last one of you niggaz

Now how can u say these new kids ain't missing out on real hip hop when I CHALLENGE u to find a NEW rapper(not Nas or Jay) who spits like that. This era has not produced a lyricist that can fuck witht these cats from the late '90's, it's proven fact.

Radio Programmers are the problem

There was a little more diverse play list on the radio during that time. Even though artist from the west and a few from the south were getting some play the east was still the dominate sound on the radio and video shows. The people who love the east coast sound still had their favorite rapper or group as the dominate sound on the airwaves be it radio or video. Even in the "transition" the east coast was still the biggest players in this thing we call hip-hop. If it was still this way today a lot of people wouldn't be saying that hip-hop is dead and all that other bullshit.

Check the Bold

Run dmc, big daddy kane, rakim, public enemy, 2 live crew, mc shy d, king tee, etc, had no complaints when nas, 2 pac(was east coast breed), biggie, jay-z, scarface, nwa, redman, snoop dogg, wu-tang, outkast, a tribe called quest , etc took over the reigns after them.

why are the 90's rappers giving the y2k rappers so much trouble coming into the game.

I don't believe that is the artists that are having the problem with the state of hip-hop I believe it is more of the fans(east bias) and hood critics for the most part.

Once again check the bold

Homie you lost! How the hell you gon call Beastie Boys, 3rd Bass and Eminem acts that emulated "real emcees" and created their own style? Why cuz they white? Do ya history! Beastie Boys were doing rap-rock right along with Run-DMC. 3rd Bass was doing hardcore hiphop right along KMD, Diamond D. Eminem was destroying competition with sick, slick shit well before he got with Dr. Dre! Bone thugs was doing a style of music that infused lyrics and harmony that nobody was doing before they hooked up with Eazy E.

Stoping getting your top 5 mcs or whatever number confused with everyone else. Pun was nice. Big L was nice. THERE IS NO GREATEST MC! There are a lot of talented people out there and put in the time and effort (or god-given gift) and make great music.

But sadly the music transitioned so smooth cuz it was still great diversity, lyricism and creative production still being pumped out. The shit went to hell once big corporations got involved and the "image rap" took the fuck over. Now you can get any, and I mean ANY person the world and give him or her a nice beat, let them say anything over it and it will sell because the mainstream audience DON'T GIVE A FUCK!

If you want great, inspiring music, 9.5 times out of 10, its not being played on the radio or tv. Its still underground and sadly that is where it will always be.

it's the internet. i imagine them niggas complained too - just wasn't a place not only to voice those complaints but catalog and archive them. it's the internet.

vets complain in every profession. my momma always said that when you walk through the door you should already be keeping an eye out for the exit.

Gotta know when to hold and know when to fold. what happens with a lotta vets is they believe the hype and have no finances - so they hit the end of they careers and they have a lifestyle and no liquidity - and niggas think they can go to the well one more time for a big payday.

you gotta remember, even 50 cent during GET RICH said "all these old rappers trying to advance, it's all over now take it like a man!" These niggas don't want to leave but nobody is listening. notice when a relevant artist drops (wayne) units fly off the shelves.

There has always been animosity and beef in hiphop.

People selectively leave out a lot when they bring up the 'good ol days'. Today's rap isn't more or worst than the past, its just that the big names of the 90's largely fell off (poor business sense, overexposed, or people just got tired of them). And fans don't want to switch it up.

Hiphop has already moved on in the underground. But instead, you have people that selectively focus on the popular stuff out and omit countless underground acts that have and still rock it.

Hiphop just gets more airtime these days but it has always been a mixtape or underground artform. I don't know why people seem to focus on the radio or tv acts as if radio or tv ever mattered to the artform.

why are the 90's rappers giving the y2k rappers so much trouble coming into the game.

Because the 90s rappers were overall better than the 80s rappers, but the 2000 rappers don't care about being good rappers, just getting paid. That's the difference. No old head could hear Nas "Illmatic" and say. . . "That nigga sucks" or shit like that. Nas was praised by the old school as a new and improved Rakim, why? Because that's what he was. Niggaz hate Souljah Boy, why? Because he's a worst version of Uncle Luke or somebody. They suck big time, and the worst part is, they don't even care that they suck. Hammer was way richer than everybody else, but it still hurt him to know that people thought he was wack, because Hip-Hop props made or broke you, no matter how big a star you were. Now, niggaz just say, "Yeah, I'm wack, but I'm rich, fuck you, you're hating". or "you're old" or some shit like that. Some ol' disrespectful shit. When KRS called out Melle Mel, they actually battled on some Hip-Hop shit, to see who the best was.

Bone Thugs are from Cleveland, not the South and 3rd Bass had 2 hits and Vanilla Ice had 1 and a half hit and YBT had no hits. Snow had 1 hit. The Beastie Boys are O.G.'s from '85, so they always had Hip-Hop cred. I don't know what you were watching during the 90s.

Wack rappers used to have their 1 or 2 hits and then go away forever, now nobody goes away.

It was it's time to grow, now it has turned into rotten fruit that begun to stink to high heaven. 1995-96 was the last good years for Hip-hop.

Homie Vanilla Ice and Snow were novelty acts, Beastie Boys and 3rd Bass was EIGHTIES groups who had emulated real emcees and created their own style (just like Eminem) and Bone Thugs was emulating WEST COAST cats with their beats and style when they came out.

:yes::yes: one of my favorite Pun verses

Basically, diversity is the key and we need to support the artists that mean something to us.

First off let me commend you for your words. Your post was on point to the T.

Number 2, this statement here is the simplest form of the art, and I have to admit that even I lost sight of this.

I'm gonna relax on the DL's for a while and get back to supporting those who need support who do this for the greater cause.

Peace and thanks.
