So exactly what are you gonna call yourself? "The brotha formerly known as ****".

You're name doesn't mean much, what you do with it and how you respect the person that gave it to you is whats important.

What a joke. So you respect the person (MASSA) who gave it to you? Cuz ya moms n pops didn't come up with Joe Smith or Mary Jones...

of course names matter... it shows power and ownership to name something. When you have a child you name it what you do for a reason... u dont just let anyone name the child, you do becuase its yours and you have power and authority over it.

If it didnt matter, why did white folks ALWAYS make sure to change the names of their victims? Its the first thing you do when you take control of something

Do you know what country/city/tribe in Africa you're from?

So exactly what name would you choose?

Do you just pick a nigerian or another west african name?

LOL. Simple fool. I respect my mother and father. Whether you think it matters or not is immaterial. If you're so weak minded as to think that you're name change will do anything for you...hey its your crutch, use it. As for me...LOL Mike, Joe, Dave or Bob, it doesn't matter to me. What matters is that my parents are proud of me, the wife is there for me at all times and my Son knows and respects his father.

Go change your name because I have a feeling your new name will still equal asshole.

And replace it with what? Islamic, Buddhist, Chinese do you have a solution friend?

How about an common Islamic name, Blacks like those names but little known that the Arabic race enslaved Black Africans hundreds of years before white ever step onto Africa, so black has been taken one slave name and replacing it with another.

Your moms and pops may have given u the name but i'm sure they only chose from a small "pool" of names so that you ie "SOCAA" would have an "easier" chance to get ur foot in the "door" ie (Massas door). All SOCAA parents do is hand down European names to their kids generation to generation and don't even sit down and think "what the does "Joe Smith" means...lol

Actually my parents are from the West Indies and my father's name is something common to his island but not common here.

having said that lets not forget we're talking about your weak ass. the fact that you need to change your name to feel good about yourself tells us a lot. Your need and desire for a crutch to get through life is sad but you gotta be you.

Now here are a few questions for you:

1- What language will you use for your new name? Can you speak it?

2- What culture is your name from?

3- Do you TRULY understand the culture that you're taking the name from. Not the BS understanding you get from knowing someone who is African or whatever you choose but the deep understanding you get from living it.

4- Have you been to the place you name originates from?

You know it only cost a couple hundred to get your DNA matched and true ancestry found out. I found out where I "CAME FROM" about 2 months ago. And you'd be surprised what is and isn't REALLY in your blood.

Word, that's good to know. I might check in to that.

1st of i said i was in the "Process" but to answer ur questions...

1- I am learning Twi which is a language in Ghana
2- I am in the "process" of learning the culture of my name
3- refer to number 2
4- I am visiting Ghana next yr with my wife...Once the "process" of learning where i actually come from is complete then i'll take it from there.....besides the thresd isn't just bout me but ALL SOCAA"S

Slavery has been around since the dawn of civilization. Africans were enslaving other Africans hundreds of years before Arabs or Whites. How do you know the name you choose wasn't a name imposed upon a conquered people.

I can relate. My father discarded his slave name in the 60's. It was an Irish name and we are not Irish. Neither my siblings nor I have tradition European names. That being said, I'm not in favor of some of the names we African-Americans are coming up with to name our children. One woman named her daughter LaDasha which she spells La-a. The Dash is actually part of the pronunciation of the name. That is just ludicrous.

If you would have used a different service you'd come from a different place.

Names and just words in general only have as much power as you give them. Why let another person's connotation of a word affect yours?

Be careful....last time one of these threads came up, some fool told everyone the name he chose for himself.

I googled that shit and that ninja called himself a "pest exterminator" in Portuguese or some shit.

That fool still mad.

Anyone born after 1865 does not have a slave name. How can you have a slave name if you were never a slave? Niccas take this whole cultural nationalism shit way too far. Its a family name. In hip-hop, its a government name.

Muhfuckas looking for that quick fix to distinguish themselves.

" A rose by any other name is a rose just the same." So is a fool.

No, he chose an Arabic name. My name is both common in Africa and the Middle East.

But do you guys have any connection to the name picked, or was it done out of the hatred of your Irish name?

I have an Irish name as well, and a pretty crackerish first/middle name. But it's my name... can't see myself changing it. Especially not to another random name. Never even a thought for me.

BTW - My parents are from Guyana and Panama, and their parents are from India/Costa Rica/Jamaica/Britain... I would assume it gets even more random the further back I trace.

There is a sublime irony to be found in a poster named 'Blanco' debating with blacks on a black board about losing their slave names.

I support you, Blanco! Do your thing! I, for one, have always wanted to change my name. Something sophisticated like Brad or Hunter. ;)
