Actually, I don't think he really survived the whole thing unscathed. Is R. Kelly anywhere near as popular as an artist in 2010 as he was before the tape was made public? I mean, he can still get records played, and some people will pay to see him perform... but before all this shit he was as big as anyone in the industry (outside of the legendary ones of course).

To compare him to Chris Brown though comes down to a couple things. First, although we all know it was him on the tape, as you said, the girl wouldn't admit it was her, so he couldn't be convicted... so legally, he's clean in as far as statutory rape. Secondly, his career was far far more advanced than Chris Brown's career at the time the tape was made public. Kelly was huge as a performer, writer, and producer before the case even came about. Chris.... that mufucka was still a baby in the industry.... he was doing great, but did he have the industry capital that R. Kelly had? Did he have even 1/10th the industry capital ? I don't think so.

Last.... Chris beat the shit out of a chick who was already a star in her own right. Not only was the incident looked at from the perspective of Chris beating the shit out of Rihanna; but it was looked at from the perspective of Rihanna being beat up... whereas R. Kelly fucked a chick that had no spotlight on her, and wouldn't even play ball to come out and tell her story.


Aside from all that though, the fact that they couldn't legally prove that the girl was underaged.... wouldn't that mean that the infamous clip is now actually a piece of generally believed underaged porn that can legally be viewed since authorities admitted in court that they can't prove she was under 18 ?

First of all, R. Kelly and Aaliyah did get married...I remember when Vibe magazine produced a copy of the marriage license...Aaliyah said she was 18 on the license. The marriage was annulled, but there was some talk about putting Kelly up on some statutory rape charges - charges which never came about. In future interviews, neither Kelly or Aaliyah would comment on it, which tells me that they were probably placed under a gag order when the marriage was annulled.

Second, Kelly got a pass because society tends to not care what happens to an underage Black girl. I remember many people actually blaming the girl for the incident, saying, "She knew what she was doing," "She shouldn't have let him do that to her", and so on.
