Dave Chappelle Radio City Music Hall 5/6

This man is probably 3rd all time behind Pryor and Murphy.:yes:

I give him the #2 spot because I've seen his stand-up get serious the way Richard used to (when he would talk about his mom or drug abuse) and still have you laughing and nodding your head at how real it is.

Yeah... plus Murphy may be the most overrated stand-up of all time.

There's no way he's behind Murphy. Murphy was overrated (as stated above) because Hollywood was looking for the next young Black comic to latch onto. I mean he was funny. Dave Chappelle doesn't have the movies Pryor did and Pryor doesn't have the TV show that Dave did.

Dayum, I wish I was there to see that. Sounds like you was droppin' some serrus knowledge for simps like me. LOL

I thought that it was just me. I usually don't argue with folks about Murphy being up there in that pantheon of great comedians just because I hate having that debate.

There's no way he's behind Murphy. Murphy was overrated...

just fucking craziness.

but ive heard young cats say the same thing about Pryor.

you know why?

cause Pryor wrote the book, Murphy wrote essays on it, and everyone else plagiarized them both.

young cats have seen all the plagiarized shit, and by the time they get to the the originators the jokes aren't funny anymore.

good clip, btw.

Delirious might be the best stand-up performance EVER.

Except for the fact that Chappelle's comedy isn't like Murphy's.

this does not negate the fact that young cats think Eddie Murphy's stand up is overrated.

trust me, at the time Delirious and Raw came out there was NOTHING like Murphy's comedy happening anywhere. it was groundbreaking AND revolutionary, and set the standard for what stand up was supposed to be.

every young comic and his grandmother studied those two movies like it was required reading for a college course, and tailored their routines to match them.

Chappelle isn't a Murphy clone, but he was certainly influenced by him.

This is exactly why I don't like having this debate. Not because your wrong or I'm right (or vice versa), simply on the fact that its all based on preference and taste.

Maybe its when I saw both of them. I saw Eddies' stuff when I was a teenager, I'm seeing Daves' stuff as an adult. Maybe that could be it. But for me Dave's material, delivery, and mannerisms all appeal a lot more to me than Eddies'.

:lol::lol::lol::lol::lol::lol: Eddie Murphy was over-rated?? Are you cats serious? "Hollywood was looking for the next young BLACK comic"???? Really? So you young cats believe that in the early 80's, that Hollywood was actively looking for BLACK talent and since Murphy was around, they just said "fuck it" and "latched" on to him??? Does that sound right? Me thinks not.

People are quick with the revisionist history these days. Eddie Murphy will easily go down as one of the top 10 to ever do it. The guy is/was exceptionally funny, great at impressions, and brought a swag to the game that no one had ever seen before. And just so you remember correctly....the reason why everyone thinks SNL sucks nowadays is because they remember when Eddie Murphy was there.

it's like who is better kobe or jordan?

mike j set the standard so you can't compare kobe to jordan.....jordan is the blueprint

same with eddie murphy....he is the standard bearer.

Its not the same. In the case of Jordan and Kobe they are measured by stats, rings, etc.

Murphy vs. Pryor, or Murphy vs. Chappell, or whom ever is all subjective and based on preference.

I know grown men that don't like Red Fox but love Pryor. I've met people that love Pryor but hate Mooney. I've met people that think that Bernie Mac and Steve Harvey are the funniest men ever to grace this earth. Its all subjective.

I couldn't give him that #2 spot just yet. Cats still talk about Eddie's standups 20+ years later. Time will tell where Dave ends up. Can't sleep on Martin Lawrence either...

That's not what I'm saying at all.

The thing that will hurt Dave is standup performances aren't as big as they were. Richard Pryor LIVE! was a big fuckin deal to be released. That went out with Chris rock.

Eddie Murphy is an unparalleled comic actor. Dude did two stand-up films and two stand-up albums, chocked full of bits -- not Jokes. Seriously, what is your favorite Eddie Murphy joke? 100-to-1 its a bit, with no punchline in sight. (My fav stand-up from Eddie is the 1st self-titled album).

I'm not saying Eddie ain't the funniest dude on earth. He might be. But he ain't nearly the best comic. Eddie on SNL > Eddie on Stage. Eddie in films >> Eddie on Stage.

Pryor, Carlin, Chappelle, Rock, Louis CK, (and more) are all better comics than Eddie Murphy.

Joke for joke, Murphy has more in common with Dane Cook than he does with Richard Pryor.

EDIT: Calling Murphy maybe "the most overrated comic of all time" was overkill and incorrect. My point is he simply overrated, based the material.

I'm not saying that Eddie is overrated. It's just that Eddie became (or thought that he became) way too cool for stand-up. He saw stand-up as the janitorial version of comedy. The shit that you have to do to get in the door. Delirious & Raw were funny as fuck. Even today. But Eddie wanted to be smooth. Eddie was on some, "I'm gonna turn my back and close my eyes and pretend that part of my life didn't happen. I'm too cool for that." He created a Billy Dee-like persona either because he was from a time when that was Black cool. Not street cool...but Black cool. Billy Dee was Black cool back in the day and Eddie envisioned that as the aura he wanted to impersonate.

In Harlem Nights, Boomerang and Distinguished Gentleman he was Black cool. Maybe he did it for role model-sake, but i don't think so. Street isn't his view of success. Hustling isn't his view of success. Delirious and Raw was street, an act of necessity. en ends to a means, but it didn't spell success to him to act a fool. What Billy Dee had spelled success and Eddie embodied that and I don't think he can go back to that and be believable. He can do it for Donkey and cartoon voice characters, but making it beLIEvable to the public in a stand-up routine is a totally different animal.

That said, I do put Dave behind Richard and in front of Eddie for best all time. Eddie made himself #3 because he disassociated himself from those two classic stand-ups.

GOW, you make a DAMN strong argument. If you look at this objectively, even if you don't completely agree there is still a lot of truth to all you've said.

Chappelle's show had 2 seasons with 10 eps each. Pryor only had 4 eps.

True, just stating the facts and posting a link for those that didn't know...Those clips are FUNNY AS HELL though. And the gun shop skit is EPIC
