KEITH Goddard, the director of the Gays and Lesbians of Zimbabwe (GALZ) died on Friday night after a short illness, friends said.

He was 49.
Goddard was a courageous and relentless campaigner for the rights of gays and lesbians which are currently not recognised by the Zimbabwe Constitution.

Goddard also sat on the board of the Zimbabwe Human Rights NGO Forum (ZHR), which announced his death.

The ZHR said it was “sad to announce the tragic death of our colleague, Keith Goddard”.

Goddard was “a champion of human, lesbians, gay men, bisexual and transgender rights in Zimbabwe and on the world stage”, it added.

He was admitted to Harare’s St Anne’s Hospital after a short illness on Friday but succumbed later that night.

On its website, GALZ says it was formed in 1990 “with a membership of around 70 largely white, middle-class people”. Goddard joined two years later and was appointed as the programmes manager in 1996.

In 2006, he was appointed as the director, a position he held up to the time of his death.

Goddard oversaw the setting up of a counselling hotline to “explore ways of challenging homophobic laws” and started HIV/AIDS campaigns, GALZ says on its website.

The organisation’s activities would grab international headlines in 1995 when having failed to get its counselling advert published in the newspapers, and finding itself under attack by government, GALZ decided to enter the 1995 Zimbabwe International Book Fair which had as its theme that year ‘Human Rights and Justice’.

The government banned GALZ from participating, and President Robert Mugabe slammed gays and lesbians as “worse than pigs and dogs”. But the publicity surrounding Mugabe’s attack on gays and lesbians threw GALZ into the limelight both locally and internationally.

PRESIDENT Robert Mugabe has vowed that the new constitution currently being drafted in the country will have no provision for gay rights.

He was addressing a weekend gathering of pilgrims from across Africa in Marange to mark the Johanne Marange Apostolic Sect’s annual Passover.

Mugabe has previously compared gay individuals to dogs and pigs.

“Today, the Anglican Church condones marriages between men and the same for women. The Archbishop of Canterbury is blessing such marriages - that is similar to dog behaviour.

“At some point, I realised that I was reprimanding blameless dogs and pigs, which are aware that marriage is for procreation.

“We say no to gays! We will not listen to those advocating the inclusion of their rights in the constitution,” charged Mugabe.

Zimbabwean law does not outlaw homosexuality as such, but sodomy is a crime.

Authorities have not vigorously enforced the law, although two employees of Gays and

Lesbians of Zimbabwe, the national gay organisation, are facing trial on charges of possessing gay pornography.

Mugabe said it was better to marry many wives than to engage in gay and lesbian relationships.

“Our Constitution allows polygamy. We will not force people into monogamous marriages. It’s there even in the bible - Solomon was not only given wealth but many wives.”

Zimbabwe's coalition government is in the midst of a nationwide survey of the population to gauge their opinions on a new constitution, which is due to be drafted and subjected to a referendum next year.

If accepted, elections will follow, based on the new national law.
