The maker of the lost Titan submersible previously complained about strict passenger-vessel regulations, saying the industry was 'obscenely safe'

Stockton Rush, the CEO of OceanGate Expeditions, on April 12, 2017
  • In a 2019 interview, the Titan's maker lamented "obscenely safe" diving security regulations.
  • CEO Stockton Rush said he understood the regulations but regretted their effect on innovation.
  • Rush is understood to be on board the submersible that lost contact with the surface Sunday.
The founder of the company behind the Titan submersible previously described his industry as "obscenely safe" and complained that passenger-vessel regulations held back innovation.

OceanGate Expeditions CEO Stockton Rush is understood to be aboard the Titan, the submersible that lost contact with the surface Sunday, prompting fears for his safety.

The vessel, which set out with four other passengers to view the wreck of the Titanic, was believed as of early Tuesday to have between 70 and 96 hours of oxygen left, the US Coast Guard said.

Rush's efforts to advance the commercial submersible industry — distinct from the world of submarines —have been well documented in the media.

Describing the industry in a 2019 interview, Rush said that there had been no injuries in the field for decades, adding: "It's obscenely safe because they have all these regulations. But it also hasn't innovated or grown — because they have all these regulations."

OceanGate did not immediately respond to a request for comment, sent outside working hours.

Its website describes a commitment to "high-level operational safety" and the Titan's "unparalleled" hull-monitoring safety system.

The profile of Rush, which appeared in Smithsonian Magazine, describes his efforts to expand human exploration of the deep, calling him a "daredevil inventor."

It chronicles Rush's passion for exploring and his efforts to energize the market in private submersibles, which had long been dampened by the number of industrial accidents in offshore submarine work.

A 1993 regulation put strict controls on safety standards and who could pilot a submersible.

Rush called these developments "understandable but illogical," saying he felt the law was well meaning but lamenting the stifling effect it put on commercial innovation.

His remarks on safety came as part of a wider set of regrets about how little the US government prioritized ocean research.

A 2019 blog post on OceanGate's website cites speed of innovation as one of the reasons the Titan isn't classed according to standard regulatory processes. It said that while the company met standards "where they apply," the slow processes of vessel classification were "anathema to innovation."

Rush's company began to advertise in 2019 commercial trips in the Titan to see the famed Titanic wreck, touting an experimental design whose carbon-fiber hull was considerably lighter than other vehicles.

Trips were postponed, according to the magazine, after the company failed to get the proper permits for its contracted research-support vessel.

As of Tuesday, efforts to locate and contact the Titan were still underway.

All these POS companies are trying to play with people's lives by trying to lessen regulations in every industry. Shit has nothing to do with innovation it has to do with fattening their pockets.

All I can think of when I heard about this story is

Lyrics

Whoa, oh, oh, oh, oh
(You're gonna miss Oxygen')
Late in the midnight hour, baby
(You're gonna miss Oxygen')
When it gets real cold outside
(You're gonna miss Oxygen')
I know, I know that you are gonna miss Breathing (Miss breathing)
Let me tell you that you're gonna miss Oxygen' (You're gonna miss Oxygen')
Yes you will, baby (You're gonna miss Oxygen')
When I'm long gone (You're gonna miss Oxygen')
I know, I know, I know that you are gonna miss Breathing (Oxygen)
You're gonna miss Oxygen'

Former Titan submersible passenger who visited the Titanic said he knew he might die and that 'nobody walked into this thinking it was going to be a pleasure cruise'

  • Mike Reiss visited the Titanic in OceanGate's Titan submersible last year.
  • Reiss said he knew he could die when he kissed his wife goodbye before the dive.
  • He said the five people currently in the missing Titan would've understood the risks too.
A former passenger of the Titan submersible who visited the Titanic shipwreck last year said he knew he might die and that the five people who are currently missing would've also understood the risks.

The Titan has been missing since Sunday when it lost contact with the surface vessel less than two hours into the dive, kicking off a major search and rescue effort for the submersible and the people on board.

Mike Reiss, a writer and producer for The Simpsons, told CNN that he knew the stakes were high when he took the same voyage in OceanGate's Titan submersible to visit the Titanic last year. Reiss said he had to sign a waiver beforehand which mentioned several times he could die.

"In every way it felt like being a Mercury astronaut. This wasn't a vacation. It wasn't tourism. It was exploration. And you're getting on a ship that's the best it could be, but they're learning as they go along," Reiss said. "You get on with a lot of excitement but just constant trepidation, constantly knowing this could be the end."

Reiss said he and his wife were supposed to go on the voyage but that she tested positive for COVID and had to stay behind.

"I kissed her goodbye knowing that that might be the last time I'd ever see her," he said, adding that "nobody walked into this thinking it was going to be a pleasure cruise, especially the experts involved."

He noted Stockton Rush, the CEO of OceanGate, the company behind the trip, was also in the submersible when it went missing Sunday.

"They made it as safe as they could make it. They trusted their own lives to it," Reiss said, "but they knew it could end this way."

On Monday, the US Coast Guard estimated the submersible had around 70 to 96 hours of oxygen left, which would mean it could last until Thursday afternoon eastern time at the latest.

He probably the son that wasn't supposed to take over the legacy.

I didn't know that Titanic guy James Camaron(sp) has done that dive many times. He even went down to that one trench which is way deeper than the titanic. That man is nuts.

The thing that disturbs me the most about these billionaires who start these company's and construct these contraptions is that they are reckless.
They skimp on certain things i.e.: Elon Musk's arrogant ass refused to build a pad with a dousing system that would prevent the rocket from destroying the pad. The pad was destroyed as a result and caused delays in additional missions.

This guy built a submersible with no regulation, no safety measures or procedures in place. No umbilical, no backup communications system, no black box. That is purely reckless behavior. These mofos swear they are such geniuses too. Only a fool would risk their lives trusting these dudes but because they are white with money...
The no umbilical is the fucked up thing to me. You could at least run a wire cable to it. They could have pulled it up as soon as they lost contact.

Im telling you.. too much of ANYTHING is no good for you..

that include money and free time....see if that muthafucka had bill to pay,

he wouldve been like.. son if I had the money we would go on one of them

I’m starting to think these Orca’s had something to do with this submersible.

There has been a number of stories over the years of these mofos going on a warpath all over the world against ships, people.

They also are taking on the Great White Shark and decimating them.
