Orphan Black Has Another Sequel Series Most Fans Missed

Released as a podcast and now available to stream for free, Orphan Black: The Next Chapter is the sequel fans missed, and unlike Echoes, it has Tatiana Maslany leading the story. While Echoes doesn't delve into the mystery of what their lives are like, The Next Chapter does. Not only that, it appears the events of this audio drama are "canon" to the overall universe, which means the fallout of the podcast series shows up in Echoes' story.

Season 1

When the original series came on, I had so much shit too watch and no time to watch it all. So I bypassed this series when it debuted back in 2013.

With the announcement of the follow up series “Orphan Black: Echoes”, I looked into that series and quickly realized I’m gonna have to watch the original series to have a good idea of WTF is going on. I thought of going through recaps, but those are specifically written as refreshers for people who have seen the series. Recaps don’t go into details.

Being I had some questions about Echoes, I didn’t want to go into it clueless. I have some Visa/Mastercard Debit cards laying around in my desk at home that I have gotten over the years from my employer for birthdays/Christmas. So I decided to use the oldest one I had before it expired, to use to open a amc+ account. No money lost on my end. I got the ad free service.

I started watching season one on Sunday night while on the road and finished tonight.

I was definitely and immediately impressed with how the first episode kicked in. Character introduction/development with the main character Sarah (Tatiana Maslany) was done quickly within the first 15 minutes, from there the premiere episode went right into some good suspense and story introductions.

The Clone part started in the opening scene and continued in the final scene of the premiere episode introducing two of Sarah’s clones in the premiere episode.

The actor who played “Nacho” from “Better Call Saul” co-stars.

For the Thirsty, Tatiana looks cute when she is cleaned up. Much better looking than how they had her in “She-Hulk”. We get some partial nudity with her and she has a tight little body on her. There is a female detective that resembles actress Andrea De Mateo (Sopranos/SOA).

For the Gay Agenda trackers, there is some quick Lesbian action, just PDA is shown. There is one supporting character who is an openly WM gay. Quick PDA is only shown once. The Gay WM does do something with two children that confirms the Gay Agenda narrative in episode 3.

For the Foot Fiends, there are few quick shots of Tatiana’s foot, soles and toes.

Tatiana plays 7 Clones in Season One, but 5 of them are the main characters for the season. She does a decent job depicting their individual personalities.

I plan on getting all 5 seasons completed sometime in August. My DVR is currently recording Echoes, so hopefully by the time I finish this series, I can roll into the new one fresh and up to speed.

Overall, this season definitely impressed me. I went into it expecting it too be a slow burn, but every episode had a good amount of suspense, thrills and unexpected twists turn up. It all kept me glued to the screen. No episode in season one came off as a filler episode. The series so far has a “Boys From Brazil” vibe to it.

Gonna get started on Season 2 this week and hopefully get it done by Saturday.

Orphan Black
Season 2
10 Episodes

I started watching season 2 this past Wednesday night while on the road. I finished it tonight on the road.

The season immediately picked up after the events shown in the last 5 minutes of the season one finale.

New characters are introduced. 2 new Sarah Clones are introduced this season.

We get some insight on why Sarah, her daughter and Helena are so important, along with what the religious nutjobs are up too. Helena has become my favorite Clone. That bird is like the “Jason Voorhees” of Clones. HaHa!!!

Information is told of the Clone Projects origins.

For the Militants, there is some interracial with a BM/WW, all that is shown is some PDA and making out.

For the Gay Agenda trackers, the WM character “Felix” from season one is still around. He interacts with an overweight gay BM character from season one. The BM does something that will anger you. A new Sarah Clone is introduced and she is “Trans” with a goatee.

It is a decent season with a good number of twists and surprises. And it ended bringing on some new twists and surprises.

This season had answered some questions I had which will help watching “Echoes”.

There’s 3 more seasons to go, so I know there will be more twists and big reveals and surprises coming.

Gonna get started on season 3 tomorrow and plan on getting it completed by weeks end.

I started this season last Tuesday night on the road. I finished it on the road tonight.

It immediately picked up after the events shown in season 2 finale.

Two new “Sarah” Clones was introduced and we got some information on a large number of Sarah Clones.

Some more information given on Projects Leda and Castor. New characters are introduced. Neolution has more involvement from what has been disclosed on them in prior seasons.

Helena showed she ain’t the one to Fuck with.

Allison and her husband with the drug stuff and school election, dragged down the season, I will assume there was a reason they spent that much time with those 2 plots.

There were some parts of the season that dragged, but would immediately pick up introducing a new twist or surprise.

And the season finale definitely was unexpected with what went down.

I plan on starting season 4 this weekend.

Looking forward to it.

Season 4

I started this season last Saturday on the road and finished last night on the road.

Thru-out the season. we got the backstory of Beth with the events leading up to her death in the Pilot episode.

A new Sarah clone is introduced in the season premiere.

More revealing information is given on Neolution, with its origin and their devious plans. It takes the story into a completely different direction with the Clone plot line.

The season ended like the prior ones with lots of twists and taking the story onto a new direction.

Season 5 is the last season. I looked into it and they gave the series a proper series finale.

I’m gonna get started on season 5 this weekend and hopefully get it completed by weeks end.

Season 5
10 Episodes

I started these Sunday night while on the road and finished them up this Sunday night on the road.

The Man behind the curtain for Neolution debuts along with other new characters.

The big reveal on what DYAD/Neolution master scheme was revealed.

Episode 8 played out like a series finale, it definitely had me me hyped for what surprises would come up for the last two episodes of the series.

Helena backstory was shown along with how she got Blonde hair.

The series did a decent and unrushable storyline to bring the series to an acceptable end.

My only complaint was with the series spending a lot of time with Allison and her drug dealing escapades. I suspect the producers were trying to cash in on the success from “Breaking Bad” that had ended its run. Allison story should have been given the same attention as Krystal.

Tatiana did a good job bringing on all the different clone personas she had to do thru-out the series.

I looked into it and I found out that 3 characters from this series carry on to “Orphan Black:Echoes”. I suspect more characters like Helena’s twins might appear.

Overall, it’s a decent Sci-Fi series. There are a ton of surprise twists and new reveals thru out the seasons. All questions brought up throughout the series is answered, so nothing is left loose.

I have all the episodes of Orphan Black:Echoes recorded at home. I plan on getting home this week and might try to knock the series out. I got a ton of shit to catch up on, now that the new TV season kicks in next month.

Looking forward to Echoes.

Orphan Black: Echoes
Season One
10 Episodes

I got home this past Friday afternoon and started the series. I finished season one this morning at home.

The series starts out in 2050 and quickly jumps forward to the year 2052 in and around Boston, MA.. Lucy (Krysten Ritter) immediately in the beginning of the first episode is informed that she was created by a new technique different from what they did in the original series.

Kira, Sarah’s daughter from the original series is the first returning character. She is an adult and Doctor. She has gone into the field of synthetic cloning and is behind creating Lucy. Cosima from the original series is still alive and Kira speaks to her on the phone.

Felix is the 2nd character to return and is played by the actor from the original series. He aids Dr. Kira. We find out Sarah is still alive and working in a shelter. Felix makes a statement about Mrs. S that somewhat gets you wondering if she survived.

The first season is a slow burn unlike the first season of the original series. The original series pretty much every episode was full of suspense, twists and surprises.

Being it’s only 25 years in the distant future, not much is shown for technology progress. Passports need to have biometric data attached to them which is interesting and will probably be a reality in the next 10 years.

The season mainly focuses on Lucy and Jules trying to figure out who created them and why.

Unlike the original series where cloning was based around DNA/Genomes, this series moves the process forward to 4D synthetic printing. Copies of people can be made just from medical records. The word “Clone” is not used for this new technique and Lucy refers to herself and Kira address her as being “Printed”.

Tatiana Maslany does not make a cameo. Being Sarah and a number of the other clones have been referenced as being alive, Tatiana should cameo in future seasons at some point.

Dr. Delphine Cormier, Kira's aunt, returns from the original series. She is played by the original actress. She and Cosima are still together and we get an update on the surviving Clones. They are all in their 60s in age.

No mention of Rachel or Allison . Helena and her twins were not mentioned.

For The Thirsty, Krysten goes thru the series looking like how she looks in real life, all sloppy with the semi-Goth look. There is a flashback episode where they used AI to make her younger on how she looked on “Breaking Bad”. She does have one scene where she is looking and doing “Jessica Jones” as an Easter Egg and to show she can still do the character and has not aged out of it.

For Gay Agenda Trackers, Kira is a full blown lesbian. Lucy/Eleanor in a flashback episode is a lesbian. You get to see Krysten doing lesbian PDA.

For the Militants, Kira and Eleanor have a IVF bi-racial child.

For the InCells, Krysten has Executive Producer Credits. And there is a large number of women with producer credits. A number of episodes are directed by women. The series also like the original is dominated with a large female cast.

Paul Darros grand scheme is revealed with 4D printing of humans. It’s left up to viewers interpretation of it being diabolical or if he is doing a good thing. Like anything, there is always “Murphy’s Law” which fits in with everything.

Overall, this series goes into a different direction from the original. As of this writing, amc has not announced a 2nd season. Hopefully they will continue it cuz there is a lot of potential on where they could go with the main plot. The series could have a good run for 5 seasons if done right.

Helena and her twins who displayed special abilities could definitely add to this series main plot. Kira’s abilities that were displayed in the original series was never pointed out in this season. I will assume it will come out with what was revealed in the season finale in future seasons.

Looking forward to future seasons.

This is why it’s hard for me to get into new series.

You watch a new series and immediately after you watch the first season. They cancel it.

I held out on “Squid Games” cuz I suspected Netflix would cancel it or just leave it limbo. Once they confirmed a 2nd season and a 3rd Season Finale, I started watching it last month and plan on finishing this month.

The same with Netflix “SuperCell”, it looked interesting, but I held off until a 2nd season was confirmed. I plan on watching it at some point.

I had debated about “OB: Echoes”, but I took the chance because of the success of the original series. Obviously I was wrong.

Hopefully someone else will pick it up.

We will wait and see…
