Does anyone know a good percentage rate of your income you should contribute to your 401K (not including what your company puts in).

Good points from previous replies in this thread.

My mom coached me back in the day to just get into the habit of contributing. Even more so when times are good with work / your financial situation.

We don't have 401k here in Canada, but people invest into their RRSP portfolios. She encouraged me to start my RRSP back around 2000 or 2001 when I was just a broke college kid. Shit, all I had was a little bit of part-time work ... but it got me thinking about the big picture and long-term.

When my employer had their matching RRSP plan ... always made sure to max that out. It wasn't around too long though, as they improved / increased the pension & benefits package instead thereafter.

I have been nearly maxing my RRSP contribution in recent years.

And when the TFSA came about (tax-free savings account) in the late-2000s ... it was up to people whether they wanted to open one, and how much they wanted to add annually. Been maxing that from the start, and had to switch things around in recent months (as it wasn't earning enough interest). Contributions always just came from my savings account (transferring the funds over)

TFSA limit 2023 and earlier

2023$6,500
2019-2021$6,000
2016-2018$5,500
2015$10,000
2013-2014$5,500
2009-2012$5,000

Everything else is invested - GICs and whatnot.

Healthy amount readily available in the emergency funds & savings accounts.

Property is paid off.

Enough in the powerchequing account - to pay bills and for unexpected expenses (bit more emerg' funds).

Anyone familiar with this fund? Is it good? I am thinking of investing more in healthcare ( i work in the industry) and this fund is down big time. The avg. annual return is 11% though.

All the big companies are there. I own several but got in from pennies to a couple dollars. They was in Aurora and Tilray at $40 and up. It’s gonna be years before it takes off so just get em at $1 or so and hold.

If you work in health care you should be looking into new and recurring afflictions, the meds to treat em, and the labs that test and make the tests. I bought Quest Diagnostics years ago because my insurance kicked back some test and made me pay out of pocket. I realized they do most of the damn testing in America. If my doctor used any machine on me I asked about it or took pics of the label and googled it. I bought Kardia some time ago when they came out with a home machine but sold at its peak. I asked my friend who’s an ER nurse to tell me who makes the scrub, curtains or any of that shit that gets used once and tossed out. Find those companies and post them here.

Hmmm. Healthcare is going to increase over the years. Amazon is trying to get in the business too…worth looking into perhaps?

Bro my company had a healthcare summit last week in DC. All the major players attended. The Chief Medical Officer for Walmart, yes Walmart, even spoke (he is either indian or black).

Alot of money from the payer side is being invested in some innovative things. Just got me to thinking this would be a good ETF to invest in, but will study some more.

Yes - amazon, google, and apple are all in the healthcare space....

I can only speak for UNH (purchased stock when I worked there). They have done the damn thing over the last 6/7 years as far as stock return ($100/share avg). As always, I wish I bought more but I just didn't have the spare $. No real insight into what their future plans are however.

Amazon.com Inc. will spend more than $1 billion annually on 12 to 15 movies that initially play in theaters, according to a Bloomberg report Wednesday. The ambitious outlay, believed to be the most by an internet company on theater-first movies, comes as Amazon dukes it out with video-streaming rivals Walt Disney Co. , Apple Inc. , and Netflix Inc. who are plowing billions of dollars a year to create movie and episodic content. Amazon had no immediate comment.

@gene cisco Look at it as an opportunity. This is something I shared with my buddies that are developing scripts.
