Anyone On Here Play The Guitar/Bass?

I understand. It’s definitely a bit on the intermediate/advanced side. And a little niche-y.

I like that the guy leaned on learning chords and inversions though. And how he showed the method he himself used when he learned. Beyond playing chords on bass, getting familiar with the notes on the fretboard and knowing how chords are structured could be useful for conceiving better single note bass-lines- ones that add some flavor to the 1s and 5s.

but speaking of bass chords (and ”Rain” by SWV)…

Dude was a master of harmonics. I do them by mistake

I don't play full chords but I do play double stops (2 note chords) quite often.
I could see more usage scenarios for bass double stops than chords.
I like playing those as well on bass. I find double stops a little harder on guitar. I use a medium pick if I'm gonna do them on guitar. A little give helps. It's amazing how smooth George Benson does them.

I play leads half the time with a pick and the other half with my thumb and index and middle finger...mainly my thumb. Try using your thumb on those guitar double stops where two strings are next to each other.

That's Paul Jackson Jr on guitar. Rod had everything mapped out for him Paul said. This song is absolutely amazing and genius when you break it down. I never knew about the extra verse that was omitted. Louis Johnson's part is very underrated.

It’s a cold piece of work. Michael had legendary top-tier talent on that song in all directions. Q, Rod, the Porcaros, Greg, “Thunder Thumbs”... I remember when it first came on R&B radio. Blew me away. 1982 was an extraordinary year for R&B music.

It really was a phenomenal year

I tried. I really tried to play with 1 finger and it's just impossible for me to play like that. Just amazing.

Gonna share something in a bit.
You do really good work, man. Salute.

I heard JJ raked the strings on the upstrokes.
