ESPN's Jeff Passan Names Five MLB Teams That Will Try to Land Shohei Ohtani

In this story:

Los Angeles Angels

LOS ANGELES ANGELS
Los Angeles Dodgers

LOS ANGELES DODGERS
San Francisco Giants

SAN FRANCISCO GIANTS
New York Yankees

NEW YORK YANKEES
New York Mets

NEW YORK METS
Seattle Mariners

SEATTLE MARINERS

As Angels superstar Shohei Ohtani is set to become a free agent after the 2023 season, ESPN’s Jeff Passan named several teams that could be of interest for the electrifying two-way star.
In an appearance on ESPN’S Get Up, Passan stated that if the Angels do not remain in contention to land a playoff spot this season, teams like the Dodgers, Mets, Giants, Yankees and Mariners will all be all in on the Ohtani sweepstakes.
“If the Angels fall out of contention … and it’s more of the same that has been over the last five years he’s been there, he [Shohei Ohtani] could be traded and he will definitely leave,” Passan said. “Seeing him do everything he’s being doing for the last three years when he has been the best player on the planet shows you why the Los Angeles Dodgers, the New York Mets are going to be the two teams that are butting heads with the Giants, the Yankees, the Mariners and perhaps others on the periphery to pay the guy $500 million-plus.

“That’s where the bidding is going to start and it’s only going to get higher than that.”

The Angels (9–9) are currently second in the American League West, three games behind the first-place Rangers (12–6) and are coming off a 3–2 loss in extra innings to the Yankees on Wednesday.
If Los Angeles remains close to the top of its division, the Angels will have a chance at the postseason. And, according to Passan, this should keep Ohtani in an Angels uniform this year.
In 17 games, Ohtani has recorded 18 hits, four homers, 11 RBI and 12 runs scored with a slash line of .281/.370/.500. As a pitcher, the 28-year-old is 2–0 with a 0.86 ERA while allowing only six hits, two runs and zero home runs.

On some real shit, the mayor is dead right about this. The A's had no intention of trying to strike a deal to stay in Oakland. They wanted to go to Vegas from the jump. I just feel bad for the residents in Oakland who are loyal fans of the A's. Shit sucks. If the A's ownership gave a flyin' fuck about the fans of Oakland they could have found business partners to invest into a new stadium and pay for it themselves instead of putting that burdun on the city residents. It's fucked up all the way around.

Last week at Yankee Stadium, Ivon Gaete, a freelance TV reporter, was standing near the batting cage waiting for New York Yankees star Aaron Judge to finish signing autographs for a group of kids when Marly Rivera, a baseball reporter for ESPN, began screaming at her in Spanish.

Gaete asked Rivera if she was okay. Rivera responded sarcastically, “Oh, I’m sorry, I didn’t know you speak English now.” Rivera then said, within earshot of both Judge and the kids, “What a f---ing c---.”
The exchange was caught on video by Gaete’s cameraman and described to The Washington Post by three people who were either on the field or saw the video. It would lead to the end of Rivera’s ESPN employment. An ESPN spokesman said Wednesday that Rivera no longer works at the company.

In an interview with The Post, Rivera said she was being “singled out” by Major League Baseball.
Rivera covered the Yankees and national baseball for ESPN. She appeared on its Home Run Derby broadcast and on Sunday Night baseball radio coverage. A native of Puerto Rico, she specialized in coverage of Hispanic players and was among the most high-profile Hispanic women covering the sport.
But the video of the exchange with Gaete touched off an investigation that became a referendum on how Rivera did her job and interacted with colleagues. The video was shared with MLB, which set about determining what happened.
Rivera told the New York Post that the altercation with Gaete stemmed from a miscommunication over trying to conduct an interview with Judge. She said she attempted to apologize to Gaete but believed she was being targeted because she had a history of disputes with Gaete’s husband, John Blundell, a vice president of communications for MLB.

Gaete declined to comment, as did MLB.
In the course of MLB’s fact-finding, its Office of Investigations made calls and received information about the incident at Yankee Stadium and other reports about Rivera’s behavior, according to people who spoke to MLB. The information that MLB collected was then shared with ESPN, according to a person with knowledge of the events. A member of ESPN’s human resources department then conducted a full investigation into the incident at Yankee Stadium. He spoke to several media members, and the company decided to part ways with Rivera. By Thursday, Rivera had disabled her Twitter account.
Multiple reporters described to The Washington Post incidents involving Rivera that they said crossed the line from typical scrapping in America’s largest media market to creating a toxic work environment. Last year, she flipped off another reporter and called her a “white b----” after the reporter attempted to take a photo of a group of Hispanic players that Rivera was taking a picture of, according to two people who witnessed the incident. In another instance, she called a Latino reporter a “fake Hispanic,” according to multiple people who witnessed it.
“There were extenuating circumstances, but that is not an excuse,” Rivera said in an interview with The Post about those incidents. “I believe these are mischaracterizations of who I am. Disagreements between media members are part of the nature of our business and happen on a regular basis, yet I am being singled out.”

Marly Rivera's 'F***ing C***' Diss Happened In Front Of Aaron Judge, Video Shows

Ex-ESPN Reporter Marly Rivera 'F***ing C***' Diss Caught On Video ... Went Down In Front Of Aaron Judge

The "f***ing c***" barb that ex-ESPN reporter Marly Rivera hurled at a female journalist earlier this month was captured on video ... and in the footage, obtained by TMZ Sports, you can see it all went down right in front of Aaron Judge.

The incident -- which resulted in ESPN firing Rivera from her role as a national baseball reporter earlier this week -- happened on April 18 at Yankee Stadium ... just before New York took on the Los Angeles Angels in the Bronx.

According to the New York Post, Rivera had set up an interview with Judge ... but grew frustrated when freelance reporter Ivón Gaete showed up at the same time looking to speak with the Yankees superstar as well.

The video shows Rivera got so livid with Gaete -- who the Post reported had been at the stadium to cover Angels star Shohei Ohtani for Tokyo Broadcasting -- she began to raise her voice at the woman in Spanish ... as Judge signed autographs and posed for pics with fans just feet away.

At one point, Rivera rolled her eyes and called Gaete a "f***ing c***."

Gaete was clearly taken aback by the remark -- and asked a nearby camera person if they had caught it on video.

The two reporters then lingered around Judge for several moments. When he finally left the area, it seemed Rivera wanted to apologize ... but it didn't appear Gaete was willing to accept it.

ESPN said on Wednesday it had parted ways with Rivera following the encounter. Rivera, meanwhile, told the Post she fully accepted responsibility for her actions.

"There were extenuating circumstances but that in no way is an excuse for my actions," Rivera said. "I am a professional with a sterling reputation across baseball and I do believe that I am being singled out by a group of individuals with whom I have a long history of professional disagreements."

Rivera has since deleted her social media pages.
