I help my momz get her garden together each planting season the last two seasons shit ain't been popping I think her dirt is just finished, I told her we need to get some raw horse and chicken manure but the only thing is that shit will have the whole neighborhood throwing bricks at your house because you can smell that shit 5 miles away on a nice windy summer day.

For all of you that know about gardens, how can I improve the dirt quality? last couple years everything just about died didn't grow or produced a small yield.

Advice, please!

Need to increase organic matter in the soil. See if you can find this stuff locally.. it's made in Maryland so alot of the Lowes carry it on the east coast.

Yeah but it'll take longer for that stuff to break down in the soil if you don't compost or grind it up

The soil is 90% of gardening and farming. I'm trying to grow my own food too. I heard coffee and egg shells really works.

Why don’t you make a compost container. The best and cheapest fertilizer. Grass clippings, along with organic matter that you mentioned, will do the trick. It will take about 2 months.

I tried to talk her into this option at the end of winter she wasn't with it though, also these dumb ass yay smoking crackers in back of us got a big ass tree in the back of her it's not even a real tree it some shit that just grew over the years and blocks air flow and sun to her garden but the crack smoking bitch moved finally her house boarded up and condemned, but its an old cac about 90 years next to the house and some big time D-boys next to the house as well so I have to figure out a way to drop that tree with out it hitting their houses and garages

I'm thinking about setting that shit on fire in the cover of night

She had one for like 15 years since I was in middle school but I'm not going to front we fucked that up by throwing garden trash in it manure bags old water hoses in it and just about everything else I had to flatten that shit a year ago with a tiller it was bitch I had to stop every 5 minutes because water hoses and wire fence kept wrapping around the tiller blades

That was the original plan but like I mentioned she wasn't with it and I neglected to do it on my own, so now she ready to get shit going but I know if I don't fix this worn out dirt it would just be a waste

try planting spinach in a corner spot (grows like a weed)
start saving egg shells, mix into soil
get top soil from home depot
kellogg-garden-organics-garden-soil-6850-64_1000.jpg

start mulching your organic garbage (everything you cut off of vegetables and fruit) in a pit in the yard
and in the fall, don't throw away dead leaves combine into the soil or bury

going forward every year plant the foods in different places - so where you planted tomatoes this year, next year plant carrots

every fall create a mulch pit to dump leaves and waste from fruits and vegetables
Every March or at first thaw turn the soil over adding some new top soil and mulch from your pit.
after a few weeks (before May depending on the crop) plant your food

Good Knowledge right there boss we definitely guilty of planting the same thing in the same spots I'm going to cop that dirt and till it into this hard ass soil I guess momz depleted her soil after 20+ years of gardening

plant some spinach early by the end of the summer you'll be harvesting it multiple times before and into the fall, you'll be able to use a lot of it to compost

also note: what I'm calling spinach is not leaf spinach - look for chorai bhaji
you might need to find indians or west indians for the seeds - I don't know how to get them online
but the yield is large enough to stock you for winter after giving away pounds of it and using it in mulch

Get you some fish, the whole fish head and all. Dont know how big the garden is but get a few of them. Bury them around the garden. Bury them deep. Pour water on the fish, about a bucket full. Then cover the hole with dirt. Let it sit. Plant above where the fish is burried. Adds nitrogen to the soil. Dont put too many fish close by because too much nitrogen will kill the plants but just enough will help them grow fast and strong.

In my experience, you're fumbling around in the dark until you can get your soil tested. Some states offer it for free, while others may charege a few bucks. There are also some home testing kits but I don't know how reliable they are. This is the best way to find out your soil ph levels and what nutrients you have to work with. You can go from there as far as what to add to get levels to acceptable ranges.

Yes, my Mother used to do it. Also, if you fish , you can utilize the remains. But, bury them deep or the cats will dig them out..

Not so stinky/cheap solution...prolly better and healthier than manure or non-organic fertilizer is a compost of leaves, lawn clippings, kitchen scraps, crushed egg shells, coffee grounds, wood ashes..
on thing about those natural compost piles.....is that they attract critters......especially raccoons, armadillos, and possums.
and those are the exact types of animals u want to keep away from your garden.

Actually I heard that from Will Smith on 7 pounds. I just bought 8 pounds of bananas I am going to put in my garden this weekend. It's a raised bed so I don't have to worry about earth dirt.

I am going to build a watering system this weekend

Look into if your local agriculture college does soil analysis. That is one option to know if and of what the soil is deficient. Also consider you need to let your gardens rest every 7 Years, so if Moms has been planting for decades, the soil may need time to rejuvenate. Lastly, guys have given you some good conditioners for her soil, only thing is, if the dirt is stripped of nutitrants, the conditioners won’t do any good.

Good luck!

Like you said make sure you loosen up your current soil with a tiller first then cop some mushroom compost and premium top soil (black dirt). Also grab some good plant and shrub fertilizer granules. All can be purchased from Lowe's or Home Depot.

Then you can spread the coffee grounds, egg shells and banana peels around as you please.

Look into companion crops too.

For example if you plant strawberries also plant broccoli nearby.

NYC DEP was giving away compost for free, and rain barrels. Got a few bags for the garden and a rain barrel. Check your Local DEP.

Been using that rain barrel alot that past 3 weeks, getting a lot of rain

Got a few bags of the miracle grow soil from Lowes

Get your lawn tested. Also do you add lime to the garden? Go to a local feed store with they have it for dirt cheap. Also do you plant the same stuff every year?

At first glance, I thought you were talking about a woman in the thread title. When you said old earth, I thought you were talking about the woman in your life. Ol earth = my woman. If you put your conversation in the context of talking about a woman. I was like damn, son.

*I am not a 5 precenter, but grew up around it a little*.

If you want to know anything about gardening, this is the person to ask.
She's one of the few black horticulturalists in the US.
Anytime I ever have questions about anything plant or yard related, I'll shoot her a DM on instagram.
She always answers.
Hope this helps.
