Hamilton's Dad Proposes His Own Concept For Closed-Cockpit Formula Racing

hamilton-closed-cockpit.jpg

Open cockpits have been an essential part of grand prix racing for decades. That's beginning to change, though, as Formula One considers options for better protecting its drivers. What you see here is one such idea.
rendered by German designer Andries van Overbeeke based on input from one Anthony Hamilton – a name which racing fans may recognize as belonging to the father of three-time world champion Lewis Hamilton.

Anthony served as his son's manager at the start of his career until the two parted their professional ways about seven years ago, after Lewis won his first world title with McLaren.

While the “halo” design that's currently the frontrunner and the alternative “aeroscreen” were both designed specifically for F1, this proposal forms part of a different plan. It envisions a separate racing series based around this fresh design. It features even fatter tires than the rubber instituted for the 2017 FIA Formula One World Championship, a lower drag coefficient with less downforce, and a V8 engine with a hybrid electric assist channeled through all four wheels to give it all-wheel traction.

It's a sleek design, to be sure. And though it may never turn a wheel in anger, the idea of a completely closed cockpit might be worth at least considering.

Fears of F1's new regulations failing to improve the overall spectacle of Gran Prix racing crept in after just a few hours of pre-season testing yesterday.

The substantial increase in downforce of F1's 2017 cars is impacting the front-end grip of a car tucked behind another, as Lewis Hamilton and Felipe Massa were quick to point out.

"I was behind a couple of cars out there and it was harder to follow, as we expected," said Hamilton.

"And then also right now the tyres are so hard that they don't drop off, they just keep going and going and going and going.

"So most likely we're going to be doing a lot more one-stopper [races] and, since there's not degradation, less mistakes, less overtaking.

"That's my prediction, I might be wrong, we'll find out."

Massa felt his new Williams FW40 was comfortable to drive but also underlined the impact of its characteristics.

"Definitely from the driving point of view, it’s much nicer for the driver,” said the Brazilian.

"For the show, I don’t know. I’m sure it will be more difficult to overtake. Today driving behind cars you lose a lot more downforce, the car is also much bigger."

Pascal Wehrlein's mother is from Mauritius, does that mean he's Formula One's second black driver?

Thought his mom was more of the Indian persuasion.

Not sure, but I'm guessing since they didn't make a thing about it, she probably is indian. I don't know much about Mauritius except it's off the coast of East Africa.

I fell asleep while Hamilton was in the lead. How did he lose P1 to Vettel? I read this morning it had something to do with Mercedes pit stop strategy.

Lewis Hamilton says concerns about his tires led to the early pit stop that ultimately cost him the race win in Australia.

Having initially opened up a gap, Hamilton began struggling for grip in his first stint and, with Sebastian Vettel pushing him hard, it was decided to pit him early as the best way to stop the German jumping him at the stops.

However, he came out behind Max Verstappen, who had yet to pit, and was not able to get past. He lost crucial time, and when Vettel pitted, the German was able to emerge still in front.

“We had a really good start, which is fantastic,” said Hamilton. “It’s good to have a good getaway. After that, I was struggling with the grip from the get-go. Sebastian was able to always answer in terms of lap time, and the majority of the time do faster lap times. And then towards the end I got a bit in traffic, and the car started to overheat the tires, and I was struggling with grip, and it was to the point that I needed to come in.

“Plus, the gap was closing up and I was sliding around. So it was my call because otherwise he probably would have come by anyway. So then I came in and then I got obviously stuck in traffic, which is a little bit unfortunate, but that’s motor racing.”

Hamilton was gracious in defeat, praising both Vettel and his team.

“A big congratulations to Sebastian and Ferrari. I know it’s been a long time coming for them to get a result like this. It shows we are going to have a race on our hands, which we are very happy to have, which is great for the fans. Unfortunately, it’s harder than ever to get close to cars, which is a shame. We can’t even have a close battle but who knows, maybe in the future we will.

“Incredible amount of respect for Sebastian and what he’s achieved in his career. It’s been a privilege to be racing in an era with him, and now finally at a period of time when we can actually have a real race.

“I wish we could race a lot closer in the cars that we have today, but still I think the fact that we are similar pace-wise, it’s going to be a very very hard slog this season I think. It’s going to be physically and mentally demanding.”

Get in there Lewis...

Very interesting races so far this season. Long may the close racing between different teams continue.

Looks like the wider tires are allowing teams that are not as competitive as a AMG power and handling setup all are now able to push their cars harder and not worry about that balance between power and handling as much. Last year fastest lap 196.581 Nico Hulkenberg, this year his did 200.210, and faster lap this year was by Hamilton 205.745

FERNANDO ALONSO TO RACE AT INDY 500 WITH McLAREN, HONDA AND ANDRETTI AUTOSPORT

McLaren returns to Indianapolis for this year's Indy 500

After an absence of 38 years, McLaren is to return to the Indianapolis 500 next month, using Honda engines.

On May 28th 2017 McLaren will enter a single car in the 101st Indianapolis 500, powered by Honda. The car will be run by the Andretti Autosport team, headed by founder, owner and Chief Executive Officer Michael Andretti, a former IndyCar champion who raced in Formula 1 for McLaren alongside the legendary Ayrton Senna for a single season (1993) and is the son of three-time IndyCar champion and one-time Formula 1 champion Mario Andretti.

The McLaren-Honda-Andretti entry, a Dallara DW12 chassis as used by all IndyCar teams, will be driven by current McLaren-Honda Formula 1 driver Fernando Alonso, who has started 275 Grands Prix, has won 32 of those races, has become Formula 1 world champion twice, and has been Formula 1 runner-up three times.

Its engine will be a Honda 2.2-litre twin-turbo V6, limited by IndyCar regulations to 12,000rpm.

Since the Indianapolis 500 will take place on May 28th, the same day as the Monaco Grand Prix, Fernando will not race at Monaco this year. The Indianapolis 500 will be the only 2017 IndyCar race in which Fernando will compete, however, and the Monaco Grand Prix will therefore be the only 2017 Formula 1 race in which he will not compete.

In due course McLaren-Honda will announce the identity of the driver who will race Fernando’s car at Monaco.

Good, race probably the best so far. Lewis was homies own worst enemy again this weekend. Better is in the 2010-2013 mindset. He won't miss a beat if Mercedes slips up. Mercedes is about to get real team-ordery here now. The last 4 years was easy strategy-wise, but I'm they're gonna learn this play equals shit this season ain't gonna fly.
