Xbox has announced that it has acquired ZeniMax Media, and with it Bethesda Softworks, creators and publishers of The Elder Scrolls, Fallout, Wolfenstein, Doom, Dishonored, Quake, Starfield and more.

Announced by Head of Xbox Phil Spencer in an Xbox Wire post today, Microsoft acquired ZeniMax Media for $7.5 billion – 3 times the $2.5 billion it paid for Mojang and Minecraft in 2014. The deal includes ZeniMax media as a whole, Bethesda Softworks, Bethesda Game Studios, id Software, ZeniMax Online Studios, Arkane, MachineGames, Tango Gameworks, Alpha Dog, and Roundhouse Studios.

Xbox says it "will be adding Bethesda’s iconic franchises to Xbox Game Pass for console and PC."

It means Microsoft paid 7.5 Billion to get one of the biggest video game studios in the business

Sony showed two games that they were counting on for their next gen console that will now be times exclusives and will eventually end up playable on gamepass.... this is the biggest game news of 2020

Like this is huge ..... almost up there with buying Activision or EA .. this is HUGE!!!

I figured something would have to happen after it was announced Deathloop would be an exclusive (though it would be noted it was a timed exclusive), but wow.. this is holy shit crazy

Thats great for Microsoft and Xbox but what about Warner Studio's, The makers of the Batman Arkham Knight series and Mortal Kombat Franchises? Thats the one I really want them to go after. Sony has Spiderman as an exclusive. Batman exclusive to Xbox would be huge, however good for the casual gamer, I dont really understand the Gamepass deal. Seems to me that they would earn more having customers outright buy the exclusive games as opposed to putting them on the Gamepass subscription service. Does anyone know anymore financially about this?

In the long run... gamepass will make way more money for them then the individual sales .... Like you can still buy the game, but you can also pay monthly for a subscription fee.

I think once WB said that they were not going to sell Warner Studio ... Microsoft went aggressively for another buy and even though Warner Studio has some huge IP's there was no guarantee that buying Rocksteady would bring the license for Batman ... Sony has the movie and game rights for Spiderman. Rocksteady does not.

But this is a much much bigger buy..

Zenimax - owns way more games with HUGE franchises

Ok, I do see your point. But I have had Game pass since its inception and have never paid full price for it. Wouldnt it be wiser to release the first studio exclusives maybe like 6mos down the road instead of day and date? Usually when the hardcore want a new game, they purchase it within 6 months of release anyways. I do see your point though. I guess MS knows what they're doing...I guess.

A product vs. a service.

People only a buy a game one time, never have to buy it again. One transaction, one payment.

When you provide a service, you get paid multiple times consistently. On top of the money from the consumers, you can throw in extra sources of income in the service like advertising, use that service to sell their other products, or if they get paid from the studios for placement, stuff like that. I'm sure they got it set up to where it's lucrative in the long run.
