People use the word genius and they throw it around, but Prince was a true genius. There are artists that I like to call “streamers,” people that bring to you their interpretation based on how it's coming to them, and Prince was a consistent streamer. His new material always had something to offer musically, and you would hear so much more in his music than from the average John Q. Michael Jackson's organization with Quincy Jones was like that, too.
Prince and myself were both honored to be mentioned in Miles Davis' autobiography. Miles gave a birthday party in New York on the east side in the '70s and we were both invited. We were all sitting at the table and a member of Miles Davis' entourage was very talkative, a little beyond what was necessary. Prince leaned over to me and said “Larry, I can't take much more of this, I'll see you guys later.” It was a little funnier than that, but that impressed me. He was a very private person. He wasn't very talkative, especially in an environment he wasn't familiar with, but he was always courteous. That was the last time we had that much time together. We would run into each other occasionally, and it was always a pleasure. He was a class act. When we had our encounters, it was always warm. We both felt like we belonged to a special club.
In turn, there were a lot of people from my organization that Prince would choose to work. They called it the CAMEO orientation. The most recent was John Blackwell who played drums for Prince from 2000 to 2012. Johnny would tell me that Prince used to yell at him and say “man, I need that Larry Blackmon funk on the damn drums!”

Other organizers include Najee Ali, director of Project Islamic H.O.P.E., radio station KJLH, Board of Public Works Commissioner Mike Davis, and Commissioner Dallas Fowler of the Los Angeles Police Department’s Permit Review Panel, the invitation stated.
It was not immediately clear if public funds will be used to fund the event.
“Los Angeles was Prince’s second home. He spent a lot of time here,” Ali told the Los Angeles Times. “It’s not a time to mourn but a time to pay tribute to his legacy.
“We’re expecting a big party on the grass next Friday,” Ali added, referring to City Hall’s south lawn.
Prince Rogers Nelson, 57, died Thursday at his Paisley Park estate in Chanhassen, Minnesota.
That evening, Los Angeles City Hall was bathed in purple light as a tribute. The video for Prince’s hit single “Diamonds and Pearls” was filmed at the downtown landmark in 1991.

i remember back in the summer of 85 when this album dropped...I was 11 and i remember my cousin having the album and i looked at that fucking painting inside for a long time because i knew it was diff and then when my cousin started playing the album and heard Pop Life....those 2 weeks listening to the album with my cousin and he was telling i was growing up...i was almost 12 and needed to start thinking about my future in sports....then he told me about family members and how things will change once you get a lil money....look how they do me! My cousin played in the league from 80-90 didnt play in 84 and i would go spend half of the summer with him and workout and do brother things...he has always been like a big brother to me so i listened to him and Prince death made me reflect back to that entire summer and all the shit he told me actually happened....all of it. I remember putting the record player on repeat pop life all day....and getting wisdom from my cuz Im gonna have to call him up and tell him that summer he allowed a young man to see more than one direction

To be real for a second, the thing about Prince that everyone has to fucking respect is the idea of NO COMPROMISE. This dude did whatever the fuck he wanted in pursuit of his art. Some of it was admittedly pretty strange (from an average Joe, my, pov), but goddamn talk about imposing your will onto the mainstream. He's a legend. Point blank period. I also happen to think that this guy may be one of the most under appreciated guitarists of his generation. RIP to this brotha for real. Salute!
