Caitlin Clark Is The Truth

Monica McNutt held back on First Take. I'm sure there was so much more she wanted to say but couldn't go in like she wanted to. But she made them dudes look like fools at time. She wasn't with the coonery. Video of the full episode is out if anyone is interested.

The win is that they are talking about the WNBA on First Take. Say what you want, they needed Caitlin Clark.

BT, you mention the teammates laying bricks but CC out there building houses herself as TC mentions. It is not one-sided. Just look at her "highlights" versus the Liberty yesterday.

Unlike most athletes, she won't have to worry about what comes after the WNBA. She can pursue her true calling in life.

This is not a win as they are not taking about the league. They are talking about one play that happened to their white hope…. AND THEY ARE ONLY DOING IT FOR RATINGS. Stephen A admitted it when Monica touched on it.

The Sun are undefeated - not mentioned.

Diana Taurasi scores 31 - not mentioned

A few weeks ago Arike O dropped 40 points and they didn’t say nothing.

A’ja Wilson and Napheesa Collier are having MVP starts and you hear nothing.

If that bump didn’t happen they wouldn’t have said a thing about the game. Especially with CC scoring 1 bucket the following day.

‘First Take’ goes off rails with Monica McNutt questioning Stephen A. Smith’s late WNBA coverage: ‘You could have been doing this three years ago.’

“First Take” after Monica McNutt (second from right) questioned why Stephen A. Smith (L) hadn’t talked about the WNBA more in the past. (Awful Announcing on X/Twitter.)
ESPNBy Andrew Bucholtz on 06/03/2024
Tempers sometimes seem to flare on debate shows, and Monday’s First Take on ESPN was no exception. There, Stephen A. Smith and Shannon Sharpe had quite the WNBA discussion with Monica McNutt on Chennedy Carter’s hard foul on Caitlin Clark Saturday and the various reactions to it. And this really went off the rails at the end, with Molly Qerim frantically trying to get the show to a commercial break (after nearly 40 minutes without a break), but with Smith bragging (around 1:25 in the clip below) about the amount of WNBA and women’s sports coverage First Take does, McNutt saying he could have done that earlier, and Smith having quite the reaction:

The clip there starts with Smith talking about the potential of the WNBA and its players to make money (including with endorsements, which he mentions before that clip starts) and saying he “resents” how careful he feels he needs to be when discussing the league. “Now we’ve got to sit up here and watch every syllable.” After that, McNutt says “Welcome to the world of being a woman, Stephen A., and how you have to dance about your word choice, and how you have to please everybody and anybody as you navigate your being.” She then says “We are talking about the world’s greatest athletes” and Smith interrupts with “How about being a Black man?”

Sharpe chimes in too with “How about being Black?” and McNutt cuts them off with “Hold on one second. This is what I’ve been saying to y’all, and I know we’ve got to go to break. And we didn’t necessarily go there, but maybe we should. There are so many layers in this conversation around the way that it’s being discussed.”
McNutt then cuts off Sharpe’s attempt to interject and says “I know, you just shared that you’ve talked about the WNBA on your program too.” She adds “You guys may not have said everybody, but the prevailing sentiment for folks that are just joining the WNBA and following women’s sports is unfair to the women of this league, to your point, who have laid the groundwork for Caitlin Clark to come in and take it to the next level. That’s all I’m saying in these conversations.

“Chennedy Carter’s behavior is not indicative of the entire league. We are still talking about competition where you’re allowed to get an extra elbow in as long as you are competing and do it within the boundaries of the game. The game is physical, Caitlin is helping to grow the league, these women understand that. But she cannot be babied as a rookie. That’s all, I’m out.”
That led to Smith chiming in with “Who talks about the WNBA, who talks about women, who talks about women’s sports more than First Take?” McNutt then says “Stephen A., respectfully, with your platform, you could have been doing this three years ago if you wanted to,” and Smith gives a stunned “Wow,” and quite the expression:

Smith then says “Wow” a couple times more, Qerim desperately tries to get to the break, McNutt says “You know you’re my guys, but,” Smith says “Who does more for the WNBA than us?” and McNutt says “Stephen A., I’m talking to you! I’m talking to you. Don’t do that. I’m talking to you about the power that you have.” Smith says “Oh my Lord. Okay. Okay. I got it. I got it.” McNutt says “You’re my guy, I’m talking to you.”
Qerim then tries again to get the show to break with “Guys, guys, guys,” but Smith says “You’re my girl, but you’ve missed a lot of episodes of First Take, you’ve missed a lot”, McNutt shoots back with “Stephen A., three years ago, you were not talking about the WNBA at this level. Don’t do that,” Sharpe chimes in with “Monica, you’re making Stephen A.’s point!” and then Qerim finally gets out of there with “Please let me do my job, please let me do my job. We’ve gone for 40 minutes straight, it was a riveting discussion, I have to get into commercial break.”

This was a remarkable flare-up to see on the First Take set, and a notable criticism from McNutt of one of ESPN’s biggest stars in Smith. It doesn’t necessarily mean there are problems going forward; debates do sometimes get heated, and both McNutt and Smith referenced the respect they have for each other here. But this did make for an unusually tense First Take moment.

Monica McNutt Leaves Stephen A. Smith Stunned With ‘First Take’ Criticism

Smith tried to take credit for First Take’s WNBA coverage, but McNutt pushed back hard.

1. You rarely see Stephen A. Smith left speechless, but that was the case on Monday morning’s episode of First Take thanks to panelist Monica McNutt.
After a discussion on Chennedy Carter’s cheap shot foul on Caitlin Clark that was the talk of the sports world over the weekend, Smith tried to take credit for his show giving extensive coverage to the WNBA.

McNutt, however, was not having it.
“Who talks about the WNBA, who talks about women’s sports more than First Take,” asked Stephen A.
McNutt was not having the revisionist history.

“Stephen A., respectfully, with your platform you could’ve been doing this three years ago if you wanted to,” replied McNutt.
This left Smith stunned and all he could muster was a pair of back-to-back “wows.”
A little back-and-forth followed:

McNutt: “You know you’re my guy…”
Smith: “Who does more than us?”
McNutt: “Stephen A., I’m talking to you. Don’t do that. I’m talking to you about the power than you have.”

Smith: “OK, OK. I got it. You’re my girl, but you missed a lot episodes of First Take. You missed a lot.”
McNutt: “Stephen A., three years ago you would not talk about the WNBA at this level. Don’t do that.”
It’s one thing for McNutt to disagree with Stephen A., but after he challenged her, she doubled down and didn’t back down. That was impressive.

Sadly, moderator Molly Qerim cut off the discussion, which could’ve been riveting television of McNutt and Smith continued to argue over First Take’s coverage of the WNBA.
I don’t want to paint the media with one brush, but as someone who covers this stuff, I’d say 99% of sprots media, including First Take, did not cover the WNBA the way they’re covering it now. And even now, they’re not covering the WNBA.
They’re covering Caitlin Clark.

SAS covers hot topics, issues that are trending and more important sports and incidents in sports that are popular.

WNBA basketball wasn't in sports media minds, vision or thoughts to speak about 3 years ago.

There's a reason that SAS shows doesn't speak about Lacrosse, Cricket or Synchronized Swimming.

And because there's too many slow people in here. I'll say that the general public wasn't interested as a whole at the point they are now until "Angel Reese" stepped the scene.

We all know it's not because of Angel but like I said, there's lots of slow people in this thread so we'll pretend for them.

It is definitely a win because other WNBA players are becoming a household name.

The chick is a ROOKIE in a major League sport...Vets are always gonna go hard on you and theres always gonna be a learning curve..

She was drafted 1st overall...usually the team that drafts 1st overall has the worst record for a reason, it's gonna take a while before she really enjoys the type of success that she had in college.

She's been improving and adjusting and it's only been 5 games....she'll be aight in the long run.

The problem is the: dumb, impatient, hot take, critical thinking depleted, and instant gratification obsessed society we live in..They can't adjust to the natural order/progression of things

This is true. I agree 100%. BUT in fairness to folks, and it’s unfair to her, she’s been COOKIN night in and out for 3 seasons, all the way up to the Nat’l Title game not even 2 months ago, and THEN she’s BOOM! In the L with folks still on that Iowa CC sugar rush and the media just spoon feeding them more of that sugar. There wasn’t even enough time for the Talking Heads to put out to the masses what she could, and would expect at the next level, she jumped right into the fire as the face of not just that league but of women’s sports. Eventually, the Sugar Rush was bound to cause a crash and that’s what we’re seeing.

Also feel bad for her because she basically hasn’t had a break for nine months, her and Angel Reese, with 1 million eyes on them and collision now another million plus on them at the pro level shit has to be exhausting and eventually it was going to make it’s way to the court.

Doubt it. This is the worst run out of the major sports league and there is a reason why. And that reason will always be there so it is what it is.

I haven't read all the comments

But I think they get the overall point

Stephen was wrong acting like he is some sort of professional feminist savior and ally of the WNBA.

once he went THERE?

He exposed himself

Monica point was still valid

With his platform Stephen A COULD HAVE HELPED the wnba by promoting it more on his show THREE YEARS AGO.

He CHOSE not to do that because he didn't feel they were a viable topic. Which is true I guess.

But now that it's hot - it's on every week.

Cool.

But don't act like if all this controversy and attention THEY BUILT WITHOUT STEPHEN A HELP isn't the only reason he discussing it.

It is.

I think most dudes got that and are siding with Monica calling Stephen A out for being disingenuous and trying to rewrite himself on the good side of wnba history and fronting like he isn't just doing this for ratings

Again that's fine but THAT'S WHAT IT IS.

I was telling someone that a couple of days ago that I think she is not going to be in the league after 3 or 4 years. Initially, I said, I did not know her personality too well but after doing a little research, I think she has a very fucked up attitude, and she think the world should be handed to her without working for it (typical white people thinking). Also, this is why she never won a ring in college.
When has CC ever insinuated or said the world should be handed to her? All I have ever seen her go out and ball. Now her fans could be a different story. You would think she was filmed attending a Trump rally with a red MAGA cap on the way some people hate her. Again..I can understand not liking some things her fans or supporters may say. But to project all of that on her is crazy.

And let’s keep it real. Her attitude had nothing to do with her not winning a chip. That Iowa team had no where near the talent of some those other schools. She was the engine that made that team go, along with some solid role player like Kate Martin.

Folks getting pissed because the WNBA is cashing in on their Golden Goose. It doesn't matter if we or anyone else think she is trash. The dollar signs is all that matter to the league right now. If she is out of the league in 4 years, so be it. But for now she is the face of the league.

I understand but does SAS on his show actually "Promote" anything or do they talk about the popular things and topics going on in sports?

Yes he could've done more and no I don't believe that he did all that he could to promote the WNBA or women's spots in general. But what show did?

Them muthafuckas were playing on Lifetime and other weird channels a couple of years ago. Why would SAS be talking about that? :roflmao:

But you and Monica are right, he can't act like he was the pioneer of talking about WNBA basketball.

Also the WNBA been around almost 30 years, they've had almost 30 years to talk about it.

She's 100% correct! Glad that she is owning her villain role and getting paid in the process.

She's right. Nothing got the NASCAR fans, MAGA crowd, and coons more heated than when she taunted Caitlin with her own hand gesture in the Championship game last year. They were like "How dare that ****** use a white woman's gesture against her and then beat her?" They decided (the media too) that Caitlin was going to be GOAT because "fuck that ****** Angel Reese."
