I hated the way the Knicks played basketball while Oakley was there. An the fact that the Knicks never got that championship speaks volumes on the importance of talent vs. brute force. Playing to intimidate, hurt or injure your opponent is not how basketball should ever be played. I was glad to see the NBA emerge from that era.
Who knows had the Knicks focused more on playing the game using their skills verses trying to pummel their opponents maybe Patrick would've gotten a ring. An Pat Riley gets his share of the blame for promoting that style of play.

The 90s is the lowest scoring era since the shot clock inception. NBA Finals games were won scoring less than 80 points. And it wasnt all defense, it was mainly inept offense and methodical post play. The NBA had to move the 3 point line to college distance to boost scoring. People like to romanticize the past without taking an honest look at the big picture.
Agreed but what about the 60s and 70s. Where teams were scoring in the 90s and low hundreds without the 3 point shot. In '73 (last championship) the Knicks averaged over 100. Yeah the emphases turned to defense in the 80s but defense does not mean intent to injure other players.
