Rooney: 3 extra points from CU Buffs’ loss against Oregon State

BuffZone writer Pat Rooney breaks down three reactions from Colorado’s 26-19 defeat against Oregon, the Buffs’ fifth loss in the past six games.

Results still pending

Maybe the shift from Sean Lewis to Pat Shurmur as Colorado’s primary offensive play-caller will spark something over the final three games. But it wasn’t on display on opening night for the new dynamic.

It wasn’t just the second-lowest yardage total of the season (238, better only than the 199 yards at Oregon), the 5-for-14 mark on third down, or another no-show by the running game. The dawn of the Shurmur play-calling era arrived with questionable personnel decisions and a lack of execution at critical junctures.

CU generally has been proficient at clock management this season, but the sequence at the end of the first half, when a three-and-out that consumed all of 13 seconds gave Oregon State a chance to convert a late touchdown, was one of the few times this season the CU offense looked confused and out of sorts. Granted, a drop by Jimmy Horn on second down made a bad situation worse, but that doesn’t excuse the first-down call of a swing pass to Dylan Edwards which, even if it had been completed, would have ended with a minimal gain and, possibly, out of bounds.

Which brings up another point. The Shurmur approach called for Edwards to frequently be split wide, with a concerted effort to get him the ball in the passing game. Edwards hasn’t been much of a threat since the TCU opener, yet Michael Harrison, who has become a dependable option for quarterback Shedeur Sanders, barely saw the field against OSU.

The nine targets toward Edwards netted four receptions for all of 22 yards. When the Buffs finally started looking for Travis Hunter (11 targets, eight receptions, 98 yards and a touchdown) and Xavier Weaver (seven targets, five receptions, 66 yards), they made noise. Hopefully for the Buffs the new play-calling hierarchy learned just who Sanders should be feeding the most.

D glee

While the CU offense is struggling to regain the form of its early-season fireworks, the defense is trending the opposite direction and deserves credit for stepping up to the challenge in back-to-back battles against physical squads like UCLA and Oregon State.

In today’s college football, keeping your team in the game is half the battle on defense, and CU did that for a second consecutive week in the wake of the second-half collapse against Stanford. The Buffs held Oregon State 10 points under its scoring average and, following Hunter’s two interceptions at UCLA, CU continued to show signs of a return to its early-season turnover form, with fumble recoveries by Derrick McLendon and Trevor Woods.

The Buffs still have an uphill climb toward bowl eligibility. But the turnaround authored by coordinator Charles Kelly’s group deserves credit after allowing at least 35 points in five of the first seven games, culminating with the meltdown against Stanford.

Gamblin’ man

Oregon State head coach Jonathan Smith has earned his reputation as one of the top head coaches in the Pac-12 after turning a downtrodden program into one of the toughest clubs in the conference. But a sudden habit of taking completely unnecessary risks nearly cost his team for a second consecutive week.

With 3 minutes, 55 seconds left in the third quarter, following a QB sneak touchdown by OSU’s DJ Uiagalelei, the Beavers converted a PAT to increase their lead to 21-3. However, the Buffs were offside on the play, and Smith inexplicably decided to take the point off the board to go for two instead.

There is little, if any, tactical advantage to being up 19 points as opposed to 18, and the decision blew up spectacularly when CU’s Kyndrich Breedlove scooped up a fumble to score two points the other way. If OSU simply keeps the PAT on the board, the Buffs never make it a one-score game. That decision was the only reason CU had even a longshot chance at the end, and it came one week after an ill-advised fake field goal attempt on the last play of the first half — a touchdown-or-bust situation where a first down doesn’t help — proved critical in a three-point loss at Arizona.

Often I wonder if coaches feel as if they have to prove how smart they are, but Smith doesn’t seem like the type of coach who would fall into that trap. Being aggressive is one thing, but the risk-reward balance didn’t come close to adding up for OSU in these scenarios.

I think it is time to bench Sheduer Sanders. I would shut him down. What are they really playing for? With nothing to really play for I would shut him down and play everyone and make these last few games like a spring practice

That’s an absurd thing to say.
To me dude is not hurt and is actually injured. If they were playing for a playoff spot, I could understand.

Sending him out there now to continue to take punishment is where I would shut it down. We are not winning anything so get rest and we will see you in spring football

sooo JSU dont count for nothing...huh
With it being his firs year of coaching major football he has made mistakes. Just like with anything, experience comes with time. The more he coaches the more experienced he will become.

That’s why I never really posted about Coach Prime. I think it is unfair to be overly critical of someone learning on the job.

Coach Prime Addresses Team Energy: We MUST Work As A Team

Arizona will be a tough game. Arizona has a top 30 offense and defense.

Where I see the Buffs can take an advantage is the game is passing. Arizona has given up big plays and chunk yards in the passing game,

If the Buffs offense starts fast they have a shot

Colorado football QB Shedeur Sanders gets brutally honest on playing hurt

Colorado football QB Shedeur Sanders has taken a beating this season, but has no intentions of quitting on his Buffaloes teammates

Colorado football QB Shedeur Sanders has taken a beating this season, but has no intentions of quitting on his Buffaloes teammates

The 2023 season started out so promising for the Colorado football program. Deion Sanders showed up in Boulder with that trademark Prime Time swagger and confidence, breathing life into a program that had been dormant for two decades (the Buffs have only had one 10-win season in the last twenty years). When Coach Prime and the revamped Buffaloes started the season with a surprising 3-0 record on the backs of Shedeur Sanders and Travis Hunter, it looked like an unprecedented turnaround and dream season may be in the works. But the Buffaloes' dream season has since turned into a nightmare.

Following another Pac-12 loss, this one to Oregon State, the Colorado football team now sits at 4-5 on the season, a far cry from where they were following their come-from-behind win over Colorado State back in September. And from the sideline, Deion Sanders has had to watch his Buffs take each of these L's on the chin, all while he sees his son, quarterback Shedeur Sanders, get battered by opposing defenses. Following the game, Shedeur was asked about playing hurt and taking one physical beating after another.

“What type of guy would I look like, leaving all 80 of us out there hanging? It's got to be life-or-death situation for me to just leave everybody hanging like that. The pain of not being there for them overrides the pain that's going through my body.” (h/t Adam Rittenberg of ESPN).

You've gotta admire the maturity of the junior quarterback who is having an absolutely bonkers individual season, despite being one of the most sacked quarterbacks in all of college football. With an improved offensive line and defense, Deion Sanders may be able to get the Buffs back to that 10-win mark.

Back in the beginning, folks said Deion could recruit with the top schools. He did when at JSU don’t know why it was questionable being at Colorado.

Even being on this list is crazy

LSU Football: No. 1 Quarterback in America Releases Top 7 Schools

Brian Kelly and the Tigers make the cut, continue turning up the heat for Bryce Underwood.

Zack Nagy21 hours ago
The No. 1 quarterback in the 2025 class locked in his commitment date last week with five-star signal-caller Bryce Underwood set to make a decision on Jan. 6.

Now, the top player in America has released his final seven schools: LSU, Alabama, Colorado, Oregon, Michigan, Florida State and Penn State.

LSU, Michigan, Colorado and Penn State are among the key contenders for the 6-foot-3, 210-pounder who dials in for another postseason run with Belleville (Mich.). Underwood is in search of his third straight state title.

The Visits: Underwood has taken game day visits to Colorado, Penn State and LSU. For Brian Kelly and the Tigers, they continue to emerge as a serious threat after getting Underwood down to Baton Rouge on several occasions this year.

It will be a process in order for LSU to get their next signal-caller locked in. The No. 1 option is Underwood, the top overall player in the 2025 class. He’s shined throughout high school, and in the midst of a big-time junior campaign with several programs in his ear.

LSU and Michigan have separated themselves from the pack, but there’s a new contender emerging: Deion Sanders and the Colorado Buffs.

Sanders and Co. hosted Underwood for a visit to Boulder last month when Colorado took on Colorado State in their in-state rivalry matchup. With significant national attention surrounding the matchup, it became no secret why Underwood took the trip.

It’s a monstrous development in the battle for Underwood’s services. With a commitment date set for Jan. 6, the race for the top signal-caller in America got that much more challenging for Brian Kelly and the Tigers.

The No. 1 quarterback in the 2025 class, it’s for a good reason. The youngster has proven just how dominant he can be in the high school game after lighting it up during both his freshman and sophomore campaigns.

As a freshman, Underwood threw for 2,888 yards, 39 TDs, and four INTs, adding six rushing TDs. In addition to a dominant stat sheet, he also led Belleville to a 13-1 record and the Michigan Division I state championship.

Sophomore year? Continued growth. Underwood finished his second year at the high school level completing 65% of his passes for 2,751 yards and 37 touchdowns with another 642 yards on the ground and eight scores. Underwood then won his second state title.

Now, in the midst of his junior campaign, Underwood has completed nearly 68% of his throws with 2,051 yards and 26 touchdowns to just one interception. He’s added four rushing scores through nine games.

Now, a decision date and final seven schools are locked in as the coveted quarterback prepares to announce a commitment after his junior season. With LSU and Michigan emerging as two serious threats, the Bayou Bengals will continue turning up the heat for the nation's top signal-caller.

“Thank You...finally someone that understands that ALL other Coaches usually get a grace period, how you expect a man to get the job done that others FAILED at by giving this one less time and Grace to accomplish the task. EVERYONE knew or should've known this was not a Championship year, and the Buffs had one of if not the hardest schedule in CFB, with 7 Ranked Opponents! YES...SEVEN! For a rebuilding team that is brutal and a HUGE ask on a new Coach and players. Some teams like Michigan Hasn't played one ranked opponent, if that was Prime people would lose their sh!t. CU has the SAME record as TCU and Texas Tech, but those Coaches will receive Grace, even if it ain't year one SMH. When I asked a white guy what was the sole reason he refuses to give Prime the same Grace as a another Coach and his answer was "Because He Wears Chains and The Other Coaches Didn't Come in Thinking They Could Win" SMH ‍♂So what is the man to do, dress like you folks too? And since when is it wrong for a Coach to tell his players THEY CAN WIN NOW? I get it, this is Amerikkka, and many hate the way he looks, talks, dress, amongst other "OBVIOUS" reasons, this group of people will NEVER like him, Win or Lose. But I'll never understand why these same people wake up daily, search Coach Prime or Shedeur(they really hate them two ) Just to jump in the comments and HATE, and when people like myself see it, WE SUPPORT EVEN MORE. Even in Hating these people have a regurgitated answer for it, if they don't chop it up as "constructive criticism" then they resort to the "we're just here to watch a train wreck" ...But if that was the true, you're already used to Watching many "train wrecks" from this team...a team that's been irrelevant for 20yrs lol. Ridiculous Logic from these folks, just say you Hate the man and let it be, and stop crying about the Hype that YOU HELP BUILD, you're valuable to the team either way Win or Lose as long as you're watching, and that will remain true for the foreseeable Future”

He not coming. I would say it’s a very slim chance. Colorado picked up a commitment from Antwann Hill. He is the 6th rated QB.

Both would be in the same 2025 class. Both could be starters as freshman. In all likelihood, you can only keep one.

To me both of their film tape are outstanding. The QB is the hardest position to evaluate so I can’t say who is the better prospect but they both look extremely well on tape.

I thought he Colorado had a Good shot but when they picked up Antwann Hill, that changed.

Coach Prime says Shilo and Shedeur Sanders will enter 2025 NFL Draft

Sanders wants his sons to run it back for one more year at Colorado

Josh Tolle

Deion Sanders isn't going to send his sons off to the NFL in April. He's been adamant that sons Shilo and Shedeur will stay with him at Colorado and be part of the 2025 NFL Draft.

"They're going to come out at the same time... next year," Sanders said on The Dan Patrick Show. "They're not trying to leave Daddy this year, by the way."

The Sanders sons have NFL dreams at some point down the road. Coach Prime told Bleacher Report eariler this season that unless Shedeur was a top five pick, there was no reason for him to leave CU and would make more NIL money.

ESPN's Mel Kiper Jr. ranked Shedeur Sanders as the third-best NFL ready QB. He has thrown for 2,882 yards and 24 touchdowns this season. He'll likely set a few school records over the course of the final three games.

As for Shilo, the Buffs hard-hitting safety has been a steady contributor in the secondary with 45 tackles, two forced fumbles, and a pick-six vs. CSU. He missed a part of the season with a lacerated kidney.

Both would be great players for any NFL team. Prime just hopes it's a situation with great coaching and a system friendly for them to work.

There is some merit to that...
Maybe that shake up will get others to step up their games.

Deion Sanders Reveals Many Colorado Players 'Quit' After He Was Hired

Author:

Alek ArendNov 7, 2023
Last year, Colorado welcomed Deion Sanders as the new head football coach, ushering in a wave of change. From the moment Sanders took the helm until the start of the 2023 season, the Buffaloes experienced a significant roster transformation.

During the offseason, a video surfaced of Sanders addressing the team shortly after becoming the head football coach in Boulder. In his address, Sanders left no room for ambiguity, making it clear that not everyone from Colorado's 2022 roster would continue with the team. "Go ahead and jump in that [transfer] portal," he told the players who remained from the previous season.

While it's possible Sanders had conversations with some players encouraging them to explore the transfer portal, there's also a distinct possibility that a substantial number of former Colorado players voluntarily left the team following Sanders' arrival.

During a recent interview with Dan Patrick, Sanders shed light on this situation, revealing that a majority of the players who departed the team did so voluntarily. "Maybe around 20 kids, we sat down with and said, 'We may head in a different direction.' Everyone else quit," Sanders stated emphatically. "They quit. You can't hold me responsible for that." The story continues to evolve as Colorado's football program undergoes a transformative journey under Coach Sanders.

This is simply the nature of the transfer portal these days. When a coaching staff is replaced, players typically jump ship to find new opportunities and they have every right to do so.

Sanders' efforts to transform Colorado's roster paid immediate dividends thanks to the team's 3-0 start to the 2023 season. However, the Buffaloes have won just one of their last six games to fall to 4-5. That's already three games better than their 1-11 showing back in 2022, but still, there's work to be done.

Colorado takes on No. 23 Arizona in Boulder this Saturday.

Taylor Upshaw is probably one of the few they wish they kept. I am not sure what they did not see in him but he is a beast at Arizona. They also had an offensive linemen that went on to play very well.

Anyone else, they were not hurt from them leaving.

He spoke about it in length. He was told that he was not needed and should look elsewhere.

It could be a case of poor evaluation by the buffs. Arizona has a defensive scheme that fits his skill set. I have no idea.

But his production this year would have been a positive for the defense. It happens, sometimes a change of scenery is what’s best.
