Trump Press Secretary Loses It When Asked to Explain Tariffs

White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt got into a heated back-and-forth with an Associated Press reporter on Tuesday, in which she revealed that she really doesn’t understand how tariffs affect consumers—or at least is totally willing to lie about it.

Jerome Powell warns on Trump’s tariffs: High inflation could be here to stay

“We face a highly uncertain outlook with elevated risks of both higher unemployment and higher inflation,” he said at an event just outside Washington, DC. “While tariffs are highly likely to generate at least a temporary rise in inflation, it is also possible that the effects could be more persistent.”

We don't currently have the infrastructure in place for a policy like this......

This is multi layered, can our power grid handle new manufacturing facilities, citizens' households AND the rise of AI data centers?!!

No its not!

upgrading the grid will take decades and $ hundreds of billions if not trillions.....

But also, apple produces 90% of its products outside the US,

TSMC had planned a state of the art chip factory to open in 2024, it just opened in January of 2025, they wanted the second fab to open in 2026, it is now expected to open in "early" 2028 and recently a 3rd fab was commissioned that is expected to open in 2030...... the first fab was a yr behind schedule, the second is already expected to.be 2 years behind and we'll see how far behind the third one is...... typically on Taiwan they build these fabs in 2.5 yrs, due to various factors they're taking 4 years here ......

We don't have the labor force, the work ethic, the regulations, the power grid and many other things that will help make these ambitions profitable and worthwhile in the short term....

that shit about were bringing jobs/ manufacturing ...etc back to America is a pipe dream. That shit will take the better part of a decade, or past the end of Trump's "third" term if he has one.....

Yes but flat tax rate would be for the major corporations. The ones that don’t pay any taxes and haven’t for years because they are cheating the system
Agreed. There are corporations that pay absolutely nothing or very little and it isn't fair and should be illegal.
But that isn't what you said, you said that everyone should pay the flat rate and I don't think that is appropriate for start ups and super small businesses. Corporate taxes and fees are barriers for many small businesses.

Fair enough. I assumed based on the conversation that people would understand what I meant. That’s on me. And I agree with you about the small businesses..

Cool. I love this interaction and how mature you were about it. I apologize because I original read your statement in a negative way like you were being flippant and ignorant. I should have asked for clarification first.

Now back to conversation! I think the government has to force American companies back to the states and force them hire good wages! Well can’t really force so you have to “incentivize” them! Changing tax code and getting rid of the loop holes for big business corporations helps to incentivize them. Especially if they tie it to hiring people l!!! Raising tariffs alone just cause more bullshit…

See this is where a huge problem is going to be faced.
How can a company be profitable making goods in the United States.
In other countries, workers live off of pennies a day.
A US worker's breakfast alone at Starbucks is what someone in India makes in 2 weeks!
What, are we really going to make iPhones in America? Paying Americans $20/hr?
The phone would retail for $5,000!!!!

Then let's talk about the air pollution of these new factories.
Parents will not want factories in their cities. Kids will get asthma. Older people will have respiratory issues.
Then, what cities would these factories be in? The United States isn't that big.

Zimbabwe to scrap tariffs on US goods as it faces 18% Trump levy

Zimbabwe has had strained diplomatic relations with the US since it adopted a controversial land policy about 25 years ago, and because of its poor human rights record.

When Huge Trump Tariffs Hit Small African Economies

The amount of manufactured goods exported from Africa to the United States is minuscule. But for Lesotho, the impact of a stunning 50 percent tariff is enormous.

Tariffs on China could leave Americans without trees and decorations for Christmas, Reuters reports.

It is claimed that American retailers rely almost entirely on China for their Christmas decorations, where they source 87% of their goods.

"Of course, it's a matter of duties. By mid-April, all the orders are usually in, but now... it's hard to say whether any orders will come in. Maybe American customers won't buy anything this year," said the manager of one of the artificial Christmas tree factories in China.

According to the report, if Americans want new Christmas decorations this year, they will have to pay a lot more for them - if they can find them on the shelves at all
