EU will 'do the same' if US implements tariff hikes: French finance minister

French Finance Minister Eric Lombard has said the European Union will retaliate with tit-for-tat measures if the United States imposes tariffs on European products.

Speaking on the sidelines of the G20 finance ministers meeting in Cape Town on Thursday, Lombard told AFP that the EU would "do the same."

"It is clear that if the Americans maintain the tariff hikes, as President [Donald] Trump announced, the EU will do the same," Lombard said.

Members of the European Parliament assert that Trump is trying to sow division within the EU and urge leaders to stand firm against intimidation.

He added the EU is prepared to impose the same 25 percent tariffs in response to Trump's tariff announcements.

"Even if it is not in the general interest, we too must protect our interests and the interests of the countries of the Union," Lombard pointed out.

On Wednesday, Trump threatened to impose 25 percent tariffs on goods imported from the EU.

Earlier, he had accused the EU of not importing enough American products, saying he would work to “straighten that out” by imposing duties or urging an expansion of oil and gas purchases.

Speaking at an annual meeting of global elites in Davos, Switzerland on January 21, European Commission president Ursula von der Leyen said Europe was ready to negotiate with Trump.

The EU's "first priority will be to engage early, discuss common interests, and be ready to negotiate," the European official said.

“We will be pragmatic, but we will always stand by our principles to protect our interests and uphold our values,” she added.

Trump reiterates his stance by pledging to hit the EU with tariffs, while stating that a 10 percent duty on Chinese imports could be implemented as soon as February 1.

Lombard said diplomats from the G7 countries spoke to US Secretary of the Treasury Scott Bessent on Thursday, warning that the "tariff wars lead to inflation, lower growth and are not a solution."

He urged Bessent to avoid the tariff wars launched by Trump against other countries.

In his inaugural speech last month, Trump vowed to take immediate action to overhaul the US trade system, vowing to slap new “tariffs and tax foreign countries to enrich our citizens” instead of taxing the Americans.

"They treat us very, very badly. So they're going to be in for tariffs," he said of the EU. "You can't get fairness unless you do that."

1. I am giving out college scholarships and building schools in these countries.
2. You can hustle your way to success now.
3. Flipping and flopping houses at inflated prices.
4. If you don't make it, it's because you didn't work hard in school.
5. Prices, prices, prices; it's never about decent paying jobs that bring tax revenue.

Foreign trade between countries have now gotten out of control with the election interference and foreign intelligence operations targeting young children. This is one of the things that bothered me when I was in the United States laissez fair attitude towards trade and aggressive foreign intelligence operation/corruption that made it dangerous.

Anybody complaining now needs to remember 1996 welfare reform and free trade nonsense. We know how that turned out long term. What Trump needs to do is set up operations in these countries to influence public opinion with nonsense.

“Trump says there will be 20% tariffs on China”

So what will he do if China calls in that $759 billion of U.S. Treasury securities (US Debt) they are holding

:hithead::hithead::hithead:

He took their works put limits on them in his 1st term and gave them the bare minimum on a bail out. This idiot doesn't even know how the economy works let alone his current job as Musk and Putin's puppet.

Target and Best Buy warn of price hikes from Trump's tariffs

Walmart, where even wealthier shoppers have flocked for low prices, says it won’t be “completely immune” from the president’s expanding trade war either.

Go watch Too Big to Fail (2011) there a scene where Henry Paulson was scared shitless by China when he was told his country stopped other countries from doing it to send the US a message.

Any tariffs on Russia?

Watch the BGOL Republicoons make excuses for Putin's pet as he makes enemies out of allies and turns this into the U.S.S.A.

We are gonna fuck around and the U.S. dollar ain't gonna be worth shit.

I’m not sure if we even trade with them that much…

We got sanctions out the ass on them, so that probably killed any trading between the nations. This won’t allow the placing of tariffs on them, if I understand correctly

Tariff - a tax to be paid on imports or exports

I know what a tariff is. I was speaking somewhat facetiously while being serious about people defending his actions.
We are on the wrong side of history. Dude wants to be Putin so bad it hurts.

That's the plan, he thinks a lower dollar will increase US exports. There are pros and cons to it but regular folks like us would feel the cons the most.

Their unregistered foreign agents that I have been watching are spewing disinformation on social media and legacy media. Legacy media that are foreign controlled has started to launch attacks against me, for no reason.

The Democrats have been exposed as being anti-job, all they talk about is cheap prices.

I don't wanna get involved with foreign intelligence operations about trade. I just chime in because I'm stuck here in United States. Personally, I'm not a big fan of Trump, but his policies, encouraging domestic production is a good thing.

I find the pedophilia aspect of their trade psychological operations to be disgusting with their school building and scholarships. I am not hustling my way to an income, I am not wholesale buying to sell on Amazon, I am not flipping and flopping real estate. President Trump needs to get the CIA to set up trade psychological operations in these countries to manipulate into accepting the lack of jobs.

Dude wants to be Putin, he have a long way to go.
American and Russian pride is different.

Getting 70% votes probably would never happen for Trump

Trump grants one-month exemption for US automakers from new tariffs on imports from Mexico, Canada

BY JOSH BOAK AND ROB GILLIES
March 5, 2025

…The pause comes after Trump spoke with leaders of the “big 3” automakers, Ford, General Motors and Stellantis, on Wednesday, according to White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt.

Asked if 30 days was enough for the auto sector to prepare for the new taxes, Leavitt said Trump was blunt with the automakers seeking an exemption: “He told them that they should get on it, start investing, start moving, shift production here to the United States of America where they will pay no tariff.”…

Trump walks back tariffs on a range of goods from Mexico and Canada for one month

President Donald Trump issued exemptions on tariffs for a variety of goods coming into the United States from Mexico and Canada — just two days after he put the sweeping tariffs in place — leaving investors and businesses grappling with the whiplash of his back-and-forth trade policy.
