My younger brother had been doing bids since our teen years all the way up into his 40s. They do adapt to the conditions and abide by a Code. He's kind of small in stature, only 5'10", but has the heart of a Lion and is steel willed as fuck.
The first thing he does at the nearest opportunity is to establish that he's NOT the one to be fucked with. When he goes to battle, his reputation is etched in stone. Lots of time in the Hole for keeping the wolves at bay.
I went to visit him during one of his bids about 20 years ago while I was home on Leave and they had him in a 5pt restraint like a captured slave. It was a half-hour visit and at NO time was he allowed to stand, and neither was I for whatever reason, or the visit would be terminated.
He's a natural born leader, quick witted, flexible/adaptable, and street saavy as a muhfucka and I've told him numerous times that had he applied that to a stint in the military, he'd have been a Sergeant Major.
I had also feared that he'd become so acquainted with the System and how it functioned, that he'd become Institutionalized. He makes his living as a Hustler in the streets and gave few fucks about doing a short bid...it comes with the territory.
And not EVERY Black man in America has gone to prison.Cmon man.
