ESPN Suspends Dan Le Batard for LeBron James Billboard ‘Stunt’

The signage was intended as revenge for James opting out of his Miami Heat contract to re-sign with the Cleveland Cavaliers, who drafted him No. 1 overall in 2001.

James is from Akron, Ohio and played his high school ball locally at St. Vincent-St. Mary.

ESPN is in the business of entertainment, sports and, recently, suspending its on-air talent.

Dan Le Batard of ESPN's “Dan Le Batard Is Highly Questionable” and ESPN Radio show “The Dan Le Batard Show With Stugotz” has been suspended by his employer for putting up a billboard in Akron, Ohio, taunting LeBron James.

The advertisement reads: “You're Welcome, LeBron, Love, Miami,” and features a photo of the two championship rings the Miami Heat won during James’ tenure in South Beach. It's signed by the radio program.

That was good enough to get the Miami native suspended by his famously LeBron-friendly sports network.

“Dan Le Batard will be off the air for two days, returning Monday,” ESPN spokesman Josh Krulewitz said in a statement. “His recent stunt does not reflect ESPN's standards and brand. Additionally, we were not made aware of his plans in advance.”

This high-profile suspension follows another recent one at ESPN: Last week, the self-proclaimed “Worldwide Leader in Sports” suspended “First Take” co-host Stephen A. Smith over remarks he made about a domestic violence incident between Baltimore Ravens running back Ray Rice and his now-wife.

At the time, Smith said, ”We keep talking about the guys… But at the same time, we also have to make sure that we learn as much as we can about elements of provocation.”

Rice has been suspended for two games for the upcoming NFL season for allegedly beating his fiancee.

According to Greg Cote's Miami Herald blog, Le Batard had been chatting openly about his plan on the radio. Le Batard, who has been a sportswriter at the Herald since 1990, originally intended to post the below image as full page ads in local newspapers, but the print companies wouldn't play ball. So he went to Plan B.

Le Batard explained his intentions to Cote via text message: “It's just fun anarchy. All meant in fun – which, of course, will turn into Cleveland people getting filled with rage, poison and irrational hostility and want to use those billboards as a guillotine. Sports are so great, the more irrational the better. This is a publicity stunt disguised as a movement. Please don't tell anyone there is no actual movement.”

Oh, come on! There was nothing wrong with that billboard. The B in BSPN is starting to stand for "bitches".:smh:

That dude has been butt hurt since it happen

It's unprofessional, but he's made a career off of being biased. Dude wouldn't even have peers on his radio show if they were negative towards the Heat.

Lebron made that dude a bunch of money. Nobody gave a fuck about LeBatard until Lebron brought a spotlight to Miami.

He should be thanking Lebron for making him money and helping him get a show.

Dude has been acting just as bad as Dan Gilbert.

Imagine if you could listen to people talk shit about sports without them being suspended.

One day, apps will make that shit happen(professional hosts as we know them will be eliminated).

ESPN will just be a place to watch sports, not discussion. Just tired of suspensions.

Why would Lebron thank Miami for his rings? They weren't winning shit before he got there. They were a first round playoff team at best(which isn't saying anything in the east).

That shit is like Faux News.

shit...that's how it used to be...now most of ESPN is them making the same talking points all day long

Most of sports talk is about commentary. You could get reports from official news sites and then discuss them without fear of the ban hammer.

Hell, we have a rule here that a source has to be posted.

Oh well maybe they will cancel his television show or make him reformat it.

But local sports radio is supposed to biased. You want your local radio going for the home teams and getting local players on the radio.

National Sports should unbiased.

That being said the only things worth watching on ESPN these days is Around the Horn and PTI. I can hardly stand SportsCenter anymore.

I like Le Batard and this was unprofessional. However, did it really warrant a suspension?

I would say this is out of line but this is Lebatard we're talking about. This is his on-air persona as well as his natural dickheadedness.

I don't understand these cacs and cac pom pom holders like this cat, the angst against lebron is just dumb and childish, like it doesn't take someone with a pea brain to realize lebron is responsible for 4 straight finals appearances and the two rings , this is just asinine :smh: and this bs has had steam for the last 4 years, crackers

“Dan Le Batard will be off the air for two days, returning Monday,”

 why not a week like SAS. Shit, two days, all they did was give him a long weekend. ESPN is really starting to be a network of no personality. "MEMO FROM ESPN: To employees, if you have an opinion, you will be suspended, end memo"

and the billboard is stupid, Miami wasn't a sports city, they don't support the Marlins, and if Lebron didn't come they wouldn't have support the heat that much.

It did when it's directed at Lebron. I'm telling you, ESPN don't go after folks that they feel like will hurt their bottom line. If Lebron is pissed and avoiding them, interviews, etc. that's not a good look. Just like when his people put out that if anyone talked about that Delonte West shit he was done with them. ESPN made it clear to all their talent they were NOT TO TOUCH THAT SHIT! Cowherd even got in trouble for it.

It's not a coincidence who ESPN has pushed to the forefront of their NBA coverage

First it was Chris Broussard. He was tight with Lebron and his people. But then he fucked up by not getting any other stories and Woj at Yahoo murdering him on scoops. He became a joke with the "sources" tell me. Oh yeah and his comment about gay marriage.

So next who do they push, Windhorst, who went from Cleveland to Miami and is cool with Lebron.

You don't know what you're talking about. He would be the last person in miami to be butt hurt because of lbj

seems like lighthearted joke not a suspend-able offense
what happened to ppl's sense of humor.

Yeah, crying because Lebron didn't thank your city isn't being butt hurt at all.

and then complaining about how he left Miami just for PR reasons.

and complaining about how he led Miami on.

Much less him trying to contact different newspapers to take an add out, before finally doing that billboard.

Naw, that is perfectly normal from a dude with a radio show and national tv show.

Why would Lebron thank Miami for his rings? They weren't winning shit before he got there. They were a first round playoff team at best(which isn't saying anything in the east).

They weren't exactly that far from their last Championship in 2006. The billboards was funny but not that far removed from reality either. Lebron came to Miami cuz a Power Team was being assembled again there to win a Championship, he took his opportunity and left again...so be it lol.

He's a big jokester. Everything is a joke to him, he takes non of the sports shit seriously.
You might be talking about Stugotz which is the other guy on the show, and he basically acts like the world's biggest idiot on the show

His show isn't like many of the sport shows out there, you would have to be used to it understand the format.

Shit, I could just tell by his stand-in appearances from PTI. He's not even close to being the annoying nuisance that Skip is.

Some bullshit. Anyone who listens to his show even a little bit knows this was a big joke. He's been saying even before LeBron made his decision about how LeBron doesn't owe Miami anything, and how he was grateful for the championships he brought to Miami.

And ESPN suits claiming to be suprised by this is a joke, because he's spent the past week or so talking about this.

What is the suspension for? That's weak. Now they want to take the personality out of TV personality's. Fuck out of here.
