He is not shifty. He stands in one place and over-dribbles, giving the perception of shiftiness and handle, only to haul up brick shots.
Dev from In The Lab did a great job breaking this down.

@jlew is an example of handle and shiftiness but sometimes lacks control.

Whatchu know bout JLewand Dev? :giggle:

His dad did him a disservice! Letting him play like that instead of developing him into a real point guard who passes the ball. And you'd think the kid would be watching pro players and learning from them. How the hell he think he's gonna make it to the NBA at 5'5" and no real athletic skills. Hogging the ball and chucking up juvenile looking jumpers from beyond the 3 point line ain't it. The Ball brothers also had funny looking jumpers but have learned to adjust their shooting form but they also have their height going for them. So he's now playing college ball and doing the same shit! Fuck that! His ass would be on the bench until he learns to be a team player. Nobody gives a fuck about his antics and bullshit. You're 23 now, bruh! Grow the fuck up. Take advantage of school and get a proper education!

The kid had some brief moments of shine but not enough to make a difference! His dad should have shut him down! The kid is not a team player.

2 of the best coaches I ever had were back around 1994 - 1997. They were college friends who were only about 7 - 10 years older than us high schoolers. Always remember one of them saying to us - "Pass the ball - make your teammates better" ... that always stuck with me in various sports. He would later add - "If you don't get them involved, they're gonna stand around and not get any better"

Facts. I was a pretty good BBaller back in the day. I'm 5'8" and always played like a true point and unless I was wide open, I passed the ball. I played for a team of friends and we used to go from court to court around town. We played like a team and knew each other's skills. We were a well oiled machine. Had a lot of fun beating other good teams. The only organized sport I ever played was baseball. Basketball was all school yard and city courts. I grew up in Mount Vernon, NY. Home of many cats that went to the NBA so there was a lot of good ballers there! I played against many of them and held my own. I had no delusions though. Baseball was my main thing.

When I started watching this Newman kid and show, I just shook my damn head!

Shoutout to Mt. Vernon ... I've definitely heard some great stories about the talent from there over the decades.

That's the thing ... the team game ... recognizing your teammates' strengths and weaknesses.

I competed in organized basketball, soccer, and track & field over the years. I was better at soccer and track & field (100m, 200m, and some 4x100m), though I was taller at nearly 6'4". But overall I'd say I played the most basketball as it was easier to play pick-up games and streetball, than the same for soccer. Or more individualistically with track.

We had some courts about 15 mins from home in opposite directions on foot, so that was cool. Go play for hours and then walk home (uphill) for additional workout before stretching and winding down for the day.

Also back in junior high and high school we had a nice hook-up. The junior high had a church about 5 mins on foot from school which believe it or not had a full, Olympic-sized court with glass backboards and 4 individual hoops in the corners of the main gym. So we would go there for 45 mins at lunch hour after eating our lunch early in class. And then in high school we had a main gym which had 2 full courts, so people would play 4 games of half court, usually 3-on-3. And there was a small little gym around the corner on campus which had 6 hoops, so people would play in there as well. It was fun to have our core group of people, many of whom did NOT have classes together. And we'd usually be playing the 10th - 12th graders.

I'll say this, man ... I miss those days of less cares in the world!

Best shape of my fucking life.

Pretty much hooping everyday at lunch hour and in the evenings playing streetball in the spring and summer. Soccer practices x 2 weekly, and game on the weekend. Basketball practices and games through the school team. Working out on my own. And running on a regular basis (used to live in a hilly area, so it was good interval work).

Was doing landscaping from around 14 - 21yo. Mostly on my own, and for awhile with a pro landscaper who was a friend of my dad's. Worked like a mad man in the summer of '96 going back to senior year that fall. Walked into homeroom and people were like - "Jesus ... were you doing steroids this summer? You're jacked ..." - nah ... explained we had 4 - 5 contracts on this 1 street that split into two. They were also on slopes, so there was plenty of climbing, pushing, lifting, etc. It was like a constant workout.

That shit was all natural.

No ABC, 123, TRT, GHB, HGH, steroid-e.

Funny visual for you ... back in grade school I was always amongst the tallest kids. Myself and a few friends who were athletes ... always in the back row of the class pictures. The only person taller than us? A low-key, quiet French-Canadian girl. She was ALWAYS in the middle of the class photo at the back, lol.

We had some really short people in some of our classes too ... they'd be sitting down in the front and hardly pushing 5 feet, haha.

Made for quite the contrast.

Just Googled her name and checked Images too ... no online presence. A person with the same name - slightly younger - was involved in university volleyball though.

I remember being tall myself until the 7th grade.
I maxed out at 5'9 and then God gave me the middle finger. From 8th grade and on I never grew. :(

It's all good, man. At least you're not Julian Newman.

Side note ... I don't even know how the French-Canadian classmate did it. She wasn't even almond fortified back in the 80s and early-90s! How did she get so tall?! Must have been the parents' genetics.

I was 6’2 in the 9th grade. I just knew I was going to making it to 6’5 or taller.

God said naw. No NBA dreams for you. I trained as a big man because of my height and needed being an undersized SG/SF.

I lacked the ball handling and shooting skills of a guard and the strength as a 3 man.

From what little I saw of him, he could have been a mediocre guard somewhere if he had grown at all. As it is, he's not tall/good enough to shoot over opponents, and he's not skilled enough to get around them (because his ball handling isn't actually about getting around anyone.

Dude was pure ego, but never really worked on building skills. Even now, his ball play is selfish and doesn't incorporate his teammates. Which, even if they sucked, you would still use them for some type of action (moving, scoring, picks, etc.). I'd say it's a shame, but I've never seen a clip where I actually liked him.
