Didn't his grandfather also go to or teach at an HBCU... I'm not sure of that detail, but I remember reading that he was/is a source of motivation for him...

Yeah his grandfather owned a gas station in Winston Salem and was shot and killed when he was in high school. Scored 61 points in a game to honor him.
