Well Damn The Joe Budden Podcast Episode 177 - TV and Mayonnaise



On this weeks episode, Joe addresses Eminem. Joe explains how he received the news of being dissed (17:26). He then talks about his experience while being signed to Shady Records (36:24) and shares his thoughts on the demise of Slaughterhouse (44:25). Joe also states in this episode “I’m glad this day has finally arrived so everyone can be truthful” and reveals that he believes he is better than Eminem (58:50). The guys then discuss Colin Kaepernick being supported by Nike (1:51:42), Kanye West attempted rebrand (2:02:41) and Joe’s Breakfast Club interview which leads Rory and Mal to respond to Charlemagne tha God and DJ Envy (2:18:15). I’m gonna go out on a limb and say eminem is very familiar w/ who joe budden is as an artist...doesn’t strike me as the type who signs ppl for the fuck of it esp. knowing how he “discovered” 50 and eventually went on to sign him

one thing I’ll say about budden is he is very meticulous w/ his words...he didn’t simply say that he is better per se but that in the last 10 years he feels he’s dropped better content and offered more than just a nice flow...it’s a subtle difference

He’s telling the truth (with regard to Em’s lack of meaningful content). Em has always been a caricature of himself rapping about his baby mama, actual mama and baby girl. That’s it. It’s funny that only now people feel emboldened to say it. It’s like he jungle can tell when a lion has gotten too old to defend himself.

Joe is on point, but it's hard to accept when he made "Slaughtermouse" which is basically 4:51 of Eminem ass kissing.

Til this day, I can't listen to it all the way thru w/o feeling embarrassed for Joe.

If you compare their bodies of work, Buddens is way better. Eminem was a dope rapper but a huge part of his success over Buddens is that he was white and had Dre. His subjects were corny and he really didn't have that many great songs. Buddens has a good flow and raps about a wider range of subjects. If Eminem was black he would have a a career closer to Canibus. If Buddens was white, came out at the same time as Em and had Dre's backing, he would have done way better than Em did.

I recognize that 90% of the shit that is presented as rap is trash and I find it funny people are now concerned with content.

Last ten years what was hot or lukewarm from eminem? I'm not a fan so I honestly don't know, not trying to be funny. After Marshall Mathers 2000 I couldn't listen to dude anymore. Shit got old.

I feel you. When you get a chance we can compare their bodies of work song for song and you will see Buddens wins it by a landslide. Eminem is definitely a good rapper. Has good wordplay and a good flow. That said, the thing that made him GREAT was the fact he was white which was an added novelty. There are a whole bunch of black artists with the same level of wordplay and flow that didn't have half the career as Em. Black Thought from the Roots was 10x better than Em. Canibus and Em are around equals but had totally different careers. In 20 years Eminem really only had two dope albums.

Yeah Eminem has just been called dope and one of the GOATS for so long that people have just accepted it as fact. When you really look at his body of work objectively, Eminem really wasn't all that. BIG had more hits and better songs even though he was in the rap game for only 1/6 of the time Eminem has been in it. When you compare JAY Z or 2Pac's body of work to Em's by listing them, there is absolutely no comparison. Eminem was a good rapper but also one of the overrated. The reality is that he really made it big because he is white. I could argue that every rapper in slaughterhouse is better than Em. Royce has the same flow and equal wordplay. Why did Em make it huge and Royce didn't?
