Bishop surrenders on charges of attacking evangelist wife

Thomas W. Weeks, the 54-year-old bishop who shares an international ministry with estranged wife Juanita Bynum, surrendered to Atlanta police Friday on charges that he assaulted his wife.

An initial hearing is schediuled for 11 a.m. at the Fulton County Jail.

Weeks, charged with felony aggravated assault and making terrorist threats, made no statement when he walked into the jail with an attorney Friday morning.

Bynum, a fiery national evangelist whose sermons empower women to walk away from dead-end relationships, was allegedly struck by her husband Tuesday in a hotel parking lot after the pair had dinner together.

Police said Bynum, 48, has been whisked away by family as they decide what to do next.

A lawyer for Weeks said he will continue his ministry and try to reconcile with his wife after the allegations are dealt with.

"He is extremely sad over the events that have taken place," said Edward Garland, one of the two attorneys representing Weeks. "I think there is hope on his part that the relationship can get past these difficult moments.

"He has never had any accusation of any sort like this from her or anyone esle," said Garland. "There are a lot of circumstances surrounding these events that will be explained at a later time. He is turning it over to the court system at this point.''

Bynum and Weeks are co-founders of Global Destiny Church in Duluth. They were married in 2002 in a lavish televised wedding that featured a 7.76-carat diamond ring. They separated three months ago, said Bynum's sister, Tina Culpepper.

According to an Atlanta police incident report, Bynum said her husband "choked her, pushed her down, kicked and stomped her."

She told police Weeks "continued stomping" her into the ground until a hotel bell man pulled him away. Police also said Weeks threatened Bynum's life.

Culpepper said the couple was meeting for dinner at Concorde Grill in the Renaissance Concourse Hotel near Atlanta's Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport Tuesday night.

Police said the couple had met to work out their differences. Things soured, and Weeks walked out to the parking lot about 10:30 p.m., police said. He then turned back around and attacked her, said Officer Ron Campbell.

Weeks also threatened Bynum's life during the attack, police said. "Anytime you tell a person, 'I'm going to kill you,' that moves it up to a felony," Campbell said.

The bruises found on Bynum also were serious enough to bring felony aggravated assault charges against Weeks.

In a comment posted on her MySpace page, the Pentecostal evangelist said, "I am currently recovering from all of my injuries and resting well ... this too shall pass."

Her publicist, Amy Malone, said Bynum wants to keep the matter private.

"People are interpreting it to mean the two of them were fighting," Malone said. "They were not fighting. She was assaulted."

Clergy across metro Atlanta said they were saddened by the news of the public beating of Bynum, a respected "prophetess" whose star rose under the leadership of Bishop T.D. Jakes. Bynum is one of the leading speakers at Megafast, which has attracted hundreds of thousands of people to metro Atlanta in recent years.

Mixing love and ministerial work can take its toll on relationship for pastors with successful followings, clergy say.

"It is tremendously hard to balance a relationship," said the Rev. Cynthia L. Hale, pastor of Ray of Hope Christian Church. "If you happen to be more successful than your spouse or make more money or have greater prestige that is where the challenge comes in. There are many men who are secure in life, but there are also men who are insecure and they have struggled with having their wives [or girlfriends] excel in ways they don't."

Weeks has retained two lawyers: the well-known Garland, who in the past has represented NFL star Ray Lewis in his murder trial and millionaire James Sullivan, who ordered the murder of his socialite wife; and Louis Tesser.

The couple had a home in Duluth, Culpepper said. Upon their separation, Bynum moved to Waycross, where her administrative offices are located.

Members of a Georgia non-profit group, Love for All People, were working late Thursday to hire two bodyguards to protect Bynum. Culpepper said Bynum was appreciative but that it would not be necessary.

Word of the public fight spread to clergy across metro Atlanta who have either met the couple or know of them.

Once a homemaker, a hairdresser and a flight attendant, Bynum's big break came when televangelist Bishop T.D. Jakes invited her to speak at one of his conferences several years ago.

Jakes, who has worked closely with Bynum, had no comment, his spokeswoman said.

Operators at Bynum's ministry in Waycross, Juanita Bynum Ministries, asked the public "to be in prayer for her."

Culpepper, Bynum's sister, said she is keeping her sister company through this difficult time.

"She is resting well and healing of all the injuries," Culpepper said. "The injuries are not just physical."

Damn.....'ole girl ran after him in the parking lot. One report says that she ran after him....but this report only says that he turned around. But it doesn't state that he went back into the restaurant. I can only imagine the shit she was poppin', begging for the beat-down.

The correct quote is, What do you "tell" a woman with two black eyes? Nothing, you done told her twice?

Makes you wonder where Bishop Weeks gets his inspiration. Maybe the devil made him do it. Either way I'm sure his followers are confused and disillusioned by his actions. No matter what a woman does I can never side with a man who beats on his woman. :smh:

All these shall come to pass and they will turn this episode into another money making venture. If they reconcile, they write a book about some divine power joining them back together against all odds. If they don't reconcile, the so called prophetess will write a book about how God got her out of a shitty marriage and a lot of gullible idiots will give their money to them/her/him.

The church could be the solution if they weren't so greedy.

Thank God the hotel bellhop wasn't a typical self-absorbed coward like all those BGOLers who, in that other thread, babbled on and on about how they'd be in fear for their own lives if they intervened in a beatdown of a woman by a man. I guess this guy had no problem doing the right (and manly) thing, and somehow managed to live to tell about it.

:smh:

Hope he was black.

Your Capt. Save-A-Hoe mentallity clouds your thinking ( assuming you have a mind to begin with ).

No one said they were scared, we just know that a woman would stick up for the man beating her. She loves him and probably assumes that she deserves the beating.

The best advice in that thread was not to fuck with shit that aint yours.

And if you're still wrapped up in your Capt Svae-A-Hoe cape ala straitjacket mode, just watch as the weeks go by to see how this shit plays out.

This woman has a history of making bad choices with men and from the reports of the incident, it's obvious that this dude was no different.

Your Capt. Save-A-Bro (i.e., "thug") mentality clouds yours.

That's the dumbest shit you've ever said, and that's saying a lot. I guess it's cool for whites to assume that black men feel like they "deserve" to be beatdown by cops too. You're one stupid mofo. Totally ignorant. (No wonder black male violence against black women is such an epidemic. Fools like you justify it with total nonsense.)

As a bystander, it's not up to you to analyze why someone (of much weaker stature) is being brutally assaulted. You just do the right thing, as any real "man" would.

The best advice in that thread was not to fuck with shit that aint yours.

No, the only advice was "cut and run," or just blame the victim (in order to excuse your own cowardice).

And if you're still wrapped up in your Capt Svae-A-Hoe cape ala straitjacket mode, just watch as the weeks go by to see how this shit plays out.

Shit can "play out" any which way. Doesn't matter. Fact is that SHE was getting beaten savagely by a man in public, and at least one fella had the common sense to end it before she was murdered (without any harm coming to himself).

This woman has a history of making bad choices with men and from the reports of the incident, it's obvious that this dude was no different.

Her "choices" don't excuse his behavior. You should be more concerned as to why this MAN was a "bad choice." HE's obviously the problem, not her. Then again, when your mind is as twisted and corrupt (with mommy-hate) as yours is, that sort of rational thinking doesn't enter into it. Black women are just meat to you, to do with as you please. Welcome to the NEW SLAVERY (with black men as the brutal slavemasters).

:smh:

I wanna know what his side of the story is. It's fucked up that he beat her down like that (she said he continued STOMPING HER INTO THE GROUND until the bellhop intervened WTF). I wonder what was said/done to drive him that insane. I knowwww she wasn't doing all these "women uplift yourself" sermons/books etc... and then was in a abusive relationship :smh:

Can she go back in front of her self righteous peers and preach about the same thing....... I dont agree with a woman being stomped beaten, but she is complicit in some way, whether its money or sex etc.

As for Rev. Weaks, he gone........ (Hawk Harrelson impersonation)

How can you be "complicit" in a totally one-sided beatdown? Especially when the one doing the beating is a "man of God," and the victim is a minister as well. Pretty lowdown and primal. Man's true nature on display.

For some reason I doubt you'd say that Rodney King was "complicit" in his beatdown, though that would make far more sense to assert than in this case here.

The situation is messed up but it just shows that preachers and pastors and church-going folk are just like everyone else. And just like everyone else, are subceptible to the trappings of success and greed, and also like everyone else have buttons that can be pushed that can lead to violence.

People are going to make this about the church as they always do, but this type of thing happens every day in every city in America, with every type of people. Domestic violence is a serious problem, and no matter how "religious" you are, if you don't learn to how to control your anger you will succumb to the temptations to which it leads.

On another note, can everyone agree to STOP replying directly to Blunt's posts? I'm trying to enjoy having him/her/it on ignore but when you reply directly to the post it kills my buzz, because I have to read the nonsense. I'm not asking you to put Blunt on ignore like me, just don't reply to her/his/its posts. Thanks.

You're right about the devil.... the devils name was Juanita...

Besides, how do you know she didn't hit him first and he only "returned" the favor....

There are a lot of women that "hit" men. Whats different about the whole thing is, men "hit" back much harder than women.

We don't know what all the facts are, but if she did hit him, he has just as much of a "right" to charge her with assualt too.

man the pastor at Brentwood Baptist Church got busted sleeping with men and doing all kinds of faggotry about 4 years ago and the man is still the head of his church. They got this nigga on tape admitting it and he wouldn't step down. Trust me he'll get a pass, too much money is involved and Christians drunk on that "Chuuch" have a way to spin it and find some scriptures they can spit out!

Wow...we have way too many weak black men on this board and all over the world...who obviously like making excuses for bitch ass niggas who hit women.... I don't care what the fuck happen ..you dont hit a woman (End of story)

i dont hit women, and never will, but what i do know is that everybody aint the same. What we DONT know is his side of the story. Aint no telling what led up to what he did. As a man he was wrong, but what did she do?. Yeah she writes books and preaches to people about what they should do, but does she do it?. Bottom line is we are all people, no one better than another no matter what title you hold in this world. I was at work today and this cat thats a self appointed preacher was spreading the word that she caught her hubby with a man in bed. Havent heard that one but i`m sure it`s something someone made up. Bishop told of marital woes

By D. AILEEN DODD
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution

Published on: 08/24/07

A member of the church national evangelist Juanita Bynum opened with her husband said Friday that the congregation was told about marital problems between the couple during a recent service.

Bishop Thomas W. Weeks, who turned himself in to police today for allegedly beating and choking his wife, had a heart-to-heart talk with his flock earlier this month. He alluded that there was trouble in paradise and that Bynum would have to take a lesser role in their church.

Bynum and her husband have been separated for three months, according to family.

Members of Global Destiny Church in Duluth were bewildered by the bishop's strange announcement.

"He was really mean," said Tiny Gilyard, 41, of Lawrenceville, who has attended Global Destiny Church for a year. "He said people come to church because of his wife. He explained that she is not going to be preaching anymore. He said she was just going to come and sit down."

Gilyard said members of the church sat in their seats dumbstruck by the comments. A few, however, clapped their hands in support of him.

"It made no sense," she said. "It was like he was jealous of her. That was just so brazen to say in public."

Bynum and her husband moved to metro Atlanta in 2006 to launch an international ministry together. Bynum also has a headquarters in Waycross, Ga. for the ministry she started before she married Weeks in 2002.

She has an international following for her message of empowerment to women. Bynum warns women not to lose themselves for love by having pre-marital sex. She urges them to walk away from dead-end relationships that have no potential for marriage.

Clergy say pastors with successful ministries can have relationship problems as well. Mixing love and ministerial work can take its toll on a union because the work of a pastor is demanding.

Gilyard came to the church because she thought it was Bynum's. She kept going even when Bynum did not preach because she thought Weeks was a good pastor.

But she left the church the day he made the comments about his wife. And now that Weeks has be arrested, Gilyard says she will be looking for another place to worship.

"I'm not going back," said Gilyard, who is engaged to be married. "How can he counsel people about their marriages if he can't take care of his own business. That was his wife."

Thank you, I said this about domestic abuse a long time ago after "Whats love got to do with it?" Came out. Tina Turner was no fucking saint through t Ikes downfall. it was wrong for him to do that but she was complicit in some way and THEY had to be fighting over something....... Just as it takes two for a relationship to go right, it takes two for it to go awry........... She either enabled his violence, accepted it, or triggered it. Still, men have to go into relationships with a mantra like stance that women shouldnt trigger me.
