No knock to Bruno he had a tough album. It transcended a few genres, races, cultures.

He also played the game. CBS had a Bruno Mars special concert at the Apollo they televised and that’s when I knew.

Majority jays concert stuff is on tidal and not doing payola with radio stations. If “they” not making a profit off you than the perception is different.

Shouldn’t be that way but ...

Didn't know Kendrick was that short.

tumblr_p3alfue9Va1vg5p67o1_500.jpg

Same here. I knew he was short, but not THAT short. Rihanna is 5'8" and probably 5'11" in those boots.

He's nice with his though. That's all that matters really.

He succinctly gets his point across by instilling that much needed old-school nostalgia lacking in music today with nine tracks. Instead of diving into the album with a bloated guest list, Bruno and his production team, Shampoo Press & Curl (with assistance from longtime collaborators The Stereotypes) ensure 80s babies stay forever young.

On his third album, Mars, joined primarily by old comrades Philip Lawrence, Brody Brown, and James Fauntleroy, sheds the reggae and new wave inspirations and goes all-out R&B. This is less an affected retro-soul pastiche--like, say, The Return of Bruno--than it is an amusing '80s-centric tribute to black radio.

The new songs--is most diverse set to date, and mostly rigorously executed and fun--show Mr. Mars to be interested in different musical eras, different production approaches and different singing voices without veering into chaos. Mostly his songs are like cotton candy: sweet, sticky, structurally impressive but not especially deep.

24K Magic is his first album that works as a statement, and while it’s unclear if it will see the runaway success Mars has enjoyed in the past, the coherence and variety of the record’s sound and lack of any obvious dud point to the strides that Mars is making as a songwriter.

Is anything here the equal of Uptown Funk? Not quite, but the opening three songs are excellent party starters. The mid-tempo cuts lack the lustre of the uptempo ones, and the album’s closing ballad--Too Good to Say Goodbye--isn’t as persuasive as When I Was Your Man off Unorthodox Jukebox.

The album features the strongest set of beats and rhythmic hooks in Mars's canon to date, making it a could-be heir to gratuitous groove records like 1999, Off the Wall, and Remain in Light--if only it were as innovative. Ultimately, the album's magic is a trick everyone already knows.

There’s scant distinction overall, with Bruno’s eager-beaver personality wearing perilously thin on “That’s What I Like”, a tiresome tick-list of unimaginative hedonism, and “Chunky”, a big-lass anthem lacking even the roguish, cheeky [sic] charm of Sir Mixalot’s “Baby Got Back”.

In a copy cat era where everybody is sounding like each other it’s nice for some one to at least reboot the influences and do it justice. I enjoyed Bruno Mars album but I can only speak for myself.

4:44 was a benchmark in music. I don’t think it’s fully ripened yet.

Jay-Z did not lose by any means. Bruno Mars may have taken on some unwanted attention by winning.

I'm not mad at Bruno and definitely not surprised. The album is mean and sonically on point. Plus had the kind of mass appeal thats rare. Somebody posted earlier that its a popularity contest.....I mean....yeah....it absolutely is amongst the voting members of the academy...always has been and never been advertised as anything else. That's literally the point of the awards.

A couple of things to note:
Bruno Mars wrote an album full of catchy songs designed to make people dance and have fun.
Its not a rap album. Its not aimed at the rap crowd. Its aimed at the masses but with a specific focus on the R&B crowd who are sick of their tastes always being conflated with or taking a backseat to rap. Not everyone wants to hear a sequenced loop for 3 minutes and 30 seconds with no real instruments.
Just because the current generation has grown up devoid of musical arrangements doesn't mean they don't exist. And rapping will never replace singing...EVER.
Because the hip-hop community has co-opted itself into R&B the past few years, it believes it owns the genre. That's partially due to producers like Timbo who was producing hip-hop and R&B artists and blending the sounds and the racist industry itself demanding that every singer have a guest rapper on their song or it won't be a hit. The genres got conflated. Bruno's current records are derivative but nostalgic. People like him because it reminds them of when music was fun...and musical. R&B got weak and rap took it over but Bruno is just a reminder that R&B doesn't have to be resigned to slow jams like it has been seemingly for the past few years. Now, maybe brothas will git off their asses and start playing instruments and singing again. Don't like Bruno? Do better.

Secondly, 4:44 was not really all that consumable for people outside of pure hip-hop fans. Sorry. That's just the truth. It was made for people who "listen to the lyrics rather than the music". Its arrogant to believe that nobody else understands Jay-Z. FOH with that. People just didn't like it as much. Real talk. I sometimes think the only reason that Kendrick is doing so well is because he has so many industry co-signers. I'm not shitting on either of them as they both had good records but The Grammys have always been about the industry, not the masses like the Billboard awards and the Mtv music awards. The industry was feelin' Bruno because he made some fun music in a time where the social climate to be politically correct has made everyone tense. People don't want to be tense; they want to loosen up.

Thirdly,
I could have really done without that PSA bullshit from Janelle Monae. I hate to see her go that route because people liked her because she was cute and fun and energetic. She's gonna alienate her audience with the feminism speeches. Feminism seems to turn every cute chick frumpy or less attractive. Its revenge of the ugly broads. They will never get male attention, so they sway cute chicks to their cause and frump them down so they aren't cute anymore. Well played, feminazis.

Ledisi -Let Love Rule this too MUCH BETTER OVERALL R&B & SOUL ALBUM SAME ISSUE WITH MORTON ALBUM TOO "MORE SOUL THAN R&B"
Bruno Mars -24K Magic-WINNER
PJ Morton -Gumbo PJ MORTON MUCH NETTER OVEARLL R&B & SOUL ALBUM I CAN KINDA UNDERSTAND COS I SEE MORTON AS MORE "SOUL" THAN R"B so why they put him in this in strange
Musiq Soulchild -Feel the Real

Best R&B Album: VS Best Urban Contemporary Album: WTF???

SHIT IS WEIRD COS I THINK KHALID IS DEF "URBAN CONTEMPORARY "AND SO SHOULD BRUNO BE HERE BUT MORTON /LEDISI /CHILDISH /SZA /ARE MORE "SOUL"

Best Urban Contemporary Album:

6LACK -Free 6LACK
Childish Gambino -Awaken, My Love!
Khalid -American Teen
SZA -Ctrl
The Weeknd -Starboy-WINNER

Best R&B Song:

PJ Morton - "First Began"
Khalid - "Location"
Childish Gambino - "Redbone"
SZA - "Supermodel"
Bruno Mars - "That’s What I Like" -WINNER

BOTH MORTON & CHILDISH HAD A MORE SOULFUL R&B THAN BRUNO

What's the difference in Urban Contemporary and R&B? MILLION $$$ QUESTION

I have a problem with him winning R&B. Why wasn't he in pop, that's a white only category?

In a copy cat era where everybody is sounding like each other it’s nice for some one to at least reboot the influences and do it justice. I enjoyed Bruno Mars album but I can only speak for myself.

I guess all them brothas in his band and his production crew didn't get no props for album of the year, record of the year, and song of the year. No...wait....they all got Grammys. I understand where you coming from to a degree, but lets be real, Michael Jackson got on imitating James Brown and Jackie Wilson. Nothing about that is new. Bruno album was in heavy rotation across multiple genres all year.....not just one song, like half the album. If doing what he did and doing it that well was that easy, then some of them other artists you mentioned should try it and see how it stands up. Or better yet, they should mount campaigns to get their peers in the academy to vote for their shit. Kendrick album was dope, but was also his least mass appealing album...it was for rap fans. Jay album was dope....but he cant expect all them female members of the academy to vote for an album where he confess to cheating on they queen...lol. Lorde....I didnt even check her last album so I cant say, but it probably suffered from the same thing as Childish...too niche, even though it got widespread love. Bruno had the most mass appealing and heavily played album out of that bunch, not to mention some of the most consistently killer performances, so its not a mystery why he got the most votes from the people who looked at those choices on the ballot. This aint the People's Choice awards or the AMAs where anybody can vote....this is the recording academy members voting. If you think no black members of the academy voted for dude, I dont know what to tell you other than maybe you should become a member and vote.
