4:30 PM PT -- L.A. weather was extremely foggy Sunday morning, and law enforcement sources tell us even LAPD air support was grounded because of it. Flight tracker data shows Kobe's chopper appeared to first encounter weather issues as it was above the L.A. Zoo. It circled that area at least 6 times at a very low altitude -- around 875 feet -- perhaps waiting for the fog to clear.
We know the pilot contacted the control tower at Burbank Airport around 9:30 AM PT, and the tower was aware the pilot had been circling for about 15 minutes. The pilot eventually headed north along the 118 freeway before turning to the west, and started following above the 101 freeway around Woodland Hills, CA.
At around 9:40 AM they encounter more weather -- as in seriously heavy fog -- and the chopper turned south. This was critical, because they turned toward a mountainous area. The pilot suddenly and rapidly climbed from about 1200 feet up to 2000 feet.
However, moments later -- around 9:45 AM -- they flew into a mountain at 1700 feet. Flight tracker data shows they were flying at about 161 knots."

Magic and Shaq keep your heads up..

Man imagine having nothing else in your life that you do shit like that. Or that you’re like the loser trying to troll this thread. I commend the board for ignoring that loser.

Brotha - don’t post this in here because the stans are emotionally unstable.

I remember the post but Bryant was a member as soon as he was inducted into the same coven (ie becoming an Oscar award winner)

I want a criminal investigation into his death while the plane is still burning, fuck crying on BGOL. I have been warning on BGOL that he was a target, now he is dead from some freak accident. It is going to be today, until we get the answers we need. There is no crime scene tape or nothing at the crash site.

The first suspect is Lebron running off/repudiating Magic Johnson after he recruited him heavily to Los Angeles. He was the cross link between Kobe era and Lebron, which somebody wanted to break.

I was not a lakers fan... Kobe unleashed all kinds of furry against my Grizzlies... i hates dude as a player but I respected him. I’m in shock right now.. he was only one year older then me.

This shit is hitting me right up there with the deaths of Prince and Michael Jackson. It’s a gut punch.

I almost feel like this needs two stickies

Damn saw this at the gym about a couple of hours ago, was stunned. :eek2: Sorry to hear Kobe and his baby girl perished in that accident, man sad to hear, RIP to him and his seed and to the others on board. Also, Harvey and the crew at TMZ must have agents everywhere to get the jump on mainstream media.
I found out while I was at the gym too. Ruined my workout...

It is time to get this fool out of the paint, he has been in the league long enough and is causing problems with me and other people. If he wants to link up with white supremacists and help their agenda, he can do it as a non-NBA person.

I have been warning that Kobe was a target and he should have been taking extra security measures. Flying helicopters that can be tampered with easily to take your daughter to practice was not a good idea. He should have been keeping a low profile, no movies or book publishing crap he was doing.

yikes.. kind of hard to tell from the video, but it looks like it may have been weather related?

The pilot asks for VFR clearances in IMC conditions, in an area with hilly terrain.. that's a recipe for disaster
Sounds like they flew into some bad weather and then and couldn’t get out.

Y’all check this vid out when you have a sec. kinda long(15min or so) but worth the watch. Errie how this mirrors the potential situation the pilot may have found himself in. Obviously we’re just speculating...

"A few things stand out here. The helicopter pilot was flying under "special VFR". This means flight conditions didn't meet the minimums for "visual flight rules"'. To fly VFR in those conditions, you have to request "special" VFR. The hope or the goal is to get off the ground and then fly into better conditions, or regular VFR. You generally do this so you won't have to wait on the ground for conditions to improve. Especially if you are going to a place with favorable conditions. When pilots are flying low under deteriorating conditions that's a disaster waiting to happen. He or she was so low, air traffic control couldn't pick up the audio from the aircraft. Not sure if there was a mechanical issue with the aircraft but it may have hit a hill before crashing. In either case, after the investigation, I conclude this accident will be attributed to pilot error. Unless of course, there was a mechanical problem. My condolences to all the families of those who perished."

Was just reading about this. Essentially, if you're going to die in a chopper, it's like going to be like this if there isn't a mechanical error. Flying VFR in heavy fog around mountains. :smh:

he crashed not far from my area.. people said the fog been crazy the last 2-3 days

still watching the vid now... man... fuck that... no small planes or choppers for me, ever

I saw online that someone put a basketball outside their door as a tribute, and others were doing the same. Along the lines of "If there's a game up there, we got you." If you don't have anything Kobe related, I think this is a good way to pay respect to him, since he influenced many to just pick up a ball and play.

Kobe was a hit

Don’t say this, brotha. Stans are ready to kill over this news even if what you are saying holds merit considering it is Grammy night.

Most brothas here are spiritually dead and don’t understand the ramifications of what happened today

Kobe was probably just about to do his best work. I noticed what he was saying towards the end of this too...Kobe was moving into a new phase

Column: How can Kobe Bryant be gone? His legend wasn’t supposed to end this way
Lakers legend Kobe Bryant died in a helicopter crash in Calabasas on Sunday. He was 41.
(Los Angeles Times)
By BILL PLASCHKECOLUMNIST
JAN. 26, 2020

]
Kobe Bryant is gone.
I’m screaming right now, cursing into the sky, crying into my keyboard, and I don’t care who knows it.
Kobe Bryant is gone, and those are the hardest words I’ve ever had to write for this newspaper, and I still don’t believe them as I’m writing them. I’m still crying, and go ahead, let it out. Don’t be embarrassed, cry with me, weep and wail and shout into the streets, fill a suddenly empty Los Angeles with your pain.

No. No. No, damn it, no!

The Times is offering coverage of Kobe Bryant’s death for free today.
Bryant, 41, and his 13-year-old daughter, Gianna, were among nine people who died in a helicopter crash Sunday in Calabasas and how does that happen? Kobe is stronger than any helicopter. He didn’t even need a helicopter. For 20 years he flew into greatness while carrying a breathless city with him.

This can’t be true.

Kobe does not die. Not now. Kobe lives into his golden years, lives long enough to see his statues erected outside Staples Center and his jerseys inducted into the Basketball Hall of Fame. He lives long enough to sit courtside at Staples when he’s stooped and gray, keeping alive the memories of two decades of greatness with a wink, maybe even fooling everyone one last time by retiring in a community next to Shaq.

How can Mamba be dead? Mambas don’t die. Why this, why now, why him, why them? Kobe and Gianna leave behind an incredibly strong wife and mother, Vanessa, and daughters Natalia, 17, Bianka, 3, and Capri, who was born last summer. The horror of this is unspeakable. The tragedy of this is immeasurable.

Go ahead and keep crying, you won’t be alone. A huge hole has been cut out of Los Angeles’ heart, and the wound is breathtaking.
Kobe was your childhood hero. He was your adult icon. For 20 years he was on posters in your bedroom, on the television in your living room, in the lunch talk in your school cafeteria, in the smack talk at your office water cooler, and ultimately riding on a truck down Figueroa Street while you cheered and bragged and bathed in his greatness.

You watched him grow up, and this city’s relentless approach to sports grew with him, and soon, even with all of his off-court failings, many people felt they carried a little piece of him.

I covered his first game. I covered his last game. I wrote about everything in between, the titles and the sexual assault charges and the trade demands and the titles again and then finally that 60-point career-ending game against Utah.
I screamed from press row that night, just as I’m screaming now, still shaking, still not believing.

Kobe Bryant is gone.
We just talked last week.

I emailed Kobe with a request to speak to him about being passed on the all-time scoring list by LeBron James.
He emailed me back immediately. He always did.

He cleared his calendar and made time to chat on the phone because, as he always said, “You’ve been there for everything with me.”
But then, in our 20-minute conversation, he showed a side of Kobe that I had not seen before.

The edge was gone. The arms were open. He urged acceptance of LeBron. He preached calm for Lakers fans. He said greatness wasn’t worth anything if you couldn’t share it.

After about five minutes the message of this call was clear, the steely-eyed Mamba was purposely moving into a role of a wise, embracing and grateful leader of a community that had shown him so much patience and love.
“It’s crazy, watching this city and growing with it,” he said before hanging up. “I feel such an appreciation, I can never pay the city back for what it’s given me.”

And now he’s gone. Kobe is gone. Kobe is gone.
I’ll say it 81 times and it still won’t make any sense.
Kobe Bryant is gone and, so, too, is a little bit of all of us.
