How were they so far off from there supposed landing site?

From what I read the pilot got caught up in the weather and had to circle the LA zoo at a point while also having to fly dangerously low to stay out of the fog.

They were apparently flying so low that the air traffic controllers couldn't effectively hear or communicate with the pilot around the time of the crash.

Eventually the combination of the weather, being off course and inability to communicate resulted in the pilot attempting to climb this steep terrain (I believe he went from 1200 to 2000 feet) but eventually crashed at about 1700 feet.

I was thinking the same thing

Yeah that flight path is crazy
I know the news said they were hovering/circling above the city (I assume it was over Pasadena )
Waiting for some kind of special clearance from the FAA, to proceed through the fog
Maybe they really got turned around & lost their bearings
But that is one hell of a detour though
From this pic below, you can see how they were circling around Pasedena.....

they were off course, but i think the prior map post was off. el monte is nowhere near the mamba complex near thousand oaks. calabasas is near thousand oaks which is where they were headed. pilot may have been trying to go around the fog area and got disoriented. but all of la was bad weather (by our standards) pretty much all weekend (it was sunny out for a while yesterday - i was at the convention center/staples yesterday)

for those not living in la/southern california, imagine a big skillet with a quarter of the skillet cut out. the edges of the skillet is the mountains around the la basin which holds in smog (and fog), and the cut out section is the shoreline/pacific ocean.

this truly was a worse case scenario all around - weather, pilot error, you name it.

Damn. That's a pilot error. They should have never been in the sky. I think LAX has grounded flights because of it.

Sounds like that was probably trying to make an emergency landing in El Monte, but the dense fog prevented that, so that pilot decided to try and make the flight to Thousand Oaks?

perhaps...but el monte is way to the east (the blue mark on the map). judging from the yellow flight path, they flew straight northwest from his home in oc right over downtown la (probably wanted to see the skyline/staples center from the chopper) on the way to thousand oaks/simi valley. they could have landed in van nuys or something rather than pushing on, but from that photo posted earlier, there was a gym full of kids waiting to see kobe so there was some time pressure there. i'm not a pilot and definitely not inclined to fly in helicopters (did before, great experience, still scary), so not even remotely qualified to speak on what might have been going through the pilot's mind this morning. everything went wrong. tragic for all involved
