At the John Wick 4 Los Angeles premiere on March 20, the cast and crew of the film shared their deep affection for their late co-star Lance Reddick. Those who worked with him were still mourning the loss on the red carpet after Reddick’s unexpected death just a few days prior, on March 17. “He was a very beautiful person, a special artist,” Keanu Reeves told AP. “He had such a passion for his work and his craft. He was gracious, he had a dignity to him and a presence. Just to be in his light and to get a chance to work with him, I’ll cherish for the rest of my life.” “We lost our brother, and in a really sort of very shocking way. I think we’re all still in shock,” Fishburne said, acknowledging the emotional impact Reddick’s death had on him. “Life is … hard sometimes.”
“I really wish he could be with us tonight, but, you know, life,” the John Wick director Chad Stahelski said. “But we’re very fortunate to have known him. And he’s a great man, a great artist, a great human, a dear friend.” John Wick 4 will be released on March 24, and while it won’t be Reddick’s last onscreen performance, it will be his last time appearing in the franchise that he helped define.

An Appreciation for the King of Olympus

We are devastated to hear of the untimely passing of Lance Reddick, our Zeus in season one of Percy Jackson and the Olympians. I’ve been in shock since yesterday, trying to understand how such a vibrant, kind and talented man could be so quickly taken from the world.
I met Lance on set just a few months ago, and he could not have been more wonderful and welcoming. His gravitas and regal bearing made him perfect for the king of the gods, but from what I could tell, in person he was nothing like the blustery and distant sky god. He had a marvelous and quirky sense of humor. He was thoughtful, caring and piercingly perceptive. He was a multi-faceted artist who elevated every part he played from Cedric Daniels in The Wire to Charon in John Wick to Zeus in our own show.
A musician by training, he seemed to bring that sensibility to the screen — quickly reading the tempo, the melody, and the structure of every piece, finding his place in the ensemble, and then creating unforgettable, unexpected interpretations that turned the compositions into masterpieces. As a fan, I will miss him terribly. As the creator of Percy Jackson, I will never see Zeus the same way again, and I feel so fortunate that our paths crossed, if only briefly.
It will be difficult working on those scenes in which Lance appears — not just because we mourn him, but because they will remind us of how much brilliance we have lost. At least it’s comforting to know that we’ll be able to share that performance with Lance’s millions of fans, and we will get to see his artistry in action one more time. As for me, I have trouble believing such a force of nature could ever really be gone. I will choose to think that maybe Mount Olympus simply had need of their king. Godspeed, Mr. Reddick, and thank you.

Keanu Reeves, Chad Stahelski Share Memories of Lance Reddick at ‘John Wick: Chapter 4’ Premiere: ‘A Special Artist and a Gentleman of Grace’

By
Angelique Jackson, J. Kim Murphy

The Los Angeles premiere for “John Wick: Chapter 4” on Monday evening was a celebratory, yet somber occasion, as star Keanu Reeves and director Chad Stahelski paid tribute to the late Lance Reddick, who starred as Charon in all four “John Wick” films before dying suddenly on Friday. He was 60.

Upon arriving at the TCL Chinese Theatre, attendees at the Los Angeles premiere were given blue ribbon pins to wear to honor Reddick. Blue was the late actor’s favorite color.

“Lance is a people person, a special artist, a gentleman of grace and dignity,” Reeves said on the carpet. “It’s just really something special, every time he stepped on set, to watch the passion he had for his work. It’s really easy to work with him.”

“It’s not just one memory. It’s not just one day. It’s a collective. I had Lance in my life almost 10 years,” Stahelski told Variety. “Although that was done over the course of four films, we’ve worked together on other things. I just got to be happy and be proud of the fact that I got to spend so much time with him. We’re going to miss him.”

After an introduction by Reeves and Stahelski, the screening kicked off. Reddick’s first appearance onscreen early in the film earned a huge round of applause from the audience.

Although series newcomer Hiroyuki Sanada shares no scenes with Reddick’s Charon in “Chapter 4,” the Japanese actor has been a fan for nearly a decade, keeping up with prior entries.

“His role was considered one of my favorite characters,” Sanada shared. “I could see him at the beginning of this month during the junket. I knew he was a great actor, but I recognized how he was a kind person and a great human being. So I was shocked. I still can’t believe it. Hopefully, people can enjoy his performance in this movie and never forget him.”

“One of the greatest things about Lance is we became friends after the first film. It’d been about a decade,” series creator Derek Kolstad shared, shedding a few tears. “He’s a great actor, but he’s a better man. He’s a kind man, a gentleman. He just wore his heart on his sleeve.”
“It’s heartbreaking. A couple days ago, we were all in Austin at SXSW and Chad called me,” Joe Drake, Lionsgate Motion Picture Group chair said. “He had great humanity. Last year, we talked about how much he enjoyed being part of this. It’s really sad.”

News of Reddick’s death shocked Hollywood, with tributes pouring in from his former co-stars on shows like “The Wire,” as well as his friends and admirers. Reeves, Stahelski and Shamier Anderson were in Toronto for the Canadian premiere of the film when the news broke on Friday afternoon.
“I just want to say something about a great man and a great artist, a good friend, that was part of our family. Lance Reddick passed away today,” Stahelski told the crowd, choking up briefly as Anderson put a hand on his shoulder to comfort him. “So you guys get to meet him up on the screen. He’s a great part of the family and hopefully you enjoy the performance.”

Stahelski and Reeves also released a joint statement dedicating “John Wick: Chapter 4” to Reddick’s “loving memory,” writing, “We are deeply saddened and heartbroken at the loss of our beloved friend and colleague Lance Reddick. He was the consummate professional and a joy to work with. Our love and prayers are with his wife Stephanie, his children, family and friends… We will miss him dearly.”

Reddick was also expected to appear in the upcoming “John Wick” spinoff, “Ballerina,” starring Ana de Armas and Ian McShane.

McShane also released a statement to Variety after Reddick’s death, writing that he was in, “Total shock and disbelief. Lance was a wonderful human being and a wonderful colleague. My deepest condolences, peace and love to his wife, Stephanie, and all his family.”
“John Wick: Chapter 4” releases in theaters this Friday.

I'm really curious about this brothers cause of death.

I won't lie seeing people like him who are seemingly in great health and appear to be taking care of themselves freaks me out.
You too? It's crazy, but I have the same feeling. Seen people who are in the relative good health pass away what they say is natural causes and conversely seeing older fat unhealthy white people still kicking bothers me even more

I had intended on re-watching Fringe once I saw that it was on HBOMAX about a monthago, I just wish this wasn't the reason I put it on.

No one had a bad word to say about dude. When people like that pass away the world is worse off, I think

This dude has excellent diction and the way he articulates sentences reminds me of an English professor. He was always incredibly believable as an actor. Damnit. Why do all are stars keep leaving us?? and as someone pushing 40, seeing fairly young black stars pass scares the fuck out of me. I’d rather live to my 90’s and be half feeble than die young and healthy

They stated natural causes and I'm like wtf is natural about dying at his age? I wonder if he has previous illnesses because his eyes always have a yellowish jaundice look.

Still a shock. I've never seen Fringe, but I think I will start to look at it.

Agreed, it doesn't make sense.

It took me a while to watch Fringe as well but you'll enjoy it.

If you have HBOMAX you can check out Fringe. I'm sure you will enjoy it

You are correct about his jaundiced eyes. I wonder if he had any health issues

Watching Fringe right now I am captivated by the way he delivers his lines. It's immaculate, but somehow not robotic.

Many people who act, when they attempt to enunciate, it comes off as robotic, less than human. It's actually bad acting when they do it, though they don't realize it. One of the best examples is below.

Kristen Stewart perfectly delivers the line, "Whoa. What is going on," exactly as it is written, but somehow her delivery and enunciation comes off as lifeless bad acting.

Lance Reddick has perfect diction, but his lines have a bit of natural humanity pumped into them do they don't come off as stiff, bad acting.

He is a person other actors could and should study as to how to deliver their lines. Sheer brilliance.

Of course his stoic nature adds to it, but he's so fucking smooth

Funny thing is I always thought he'd make a great captain to lead a star trek show like Avery Brooks because of the very points you made.

I was watching Young Sheldon and saw him in a couple of episodes as one of Sheldon's college professors. I remember thinking that "Mobay doesn't miss a check". At the time, it was the Panoramic and I had finished a Wire run like a month before, and was finishing up Bosch, and also saw him in White House Down like a few weeks before....& now he's gone. Shit is crazy

exactly. He is very precise and cultured. Almost like Patrick Stewart but I cannot see Picard pulling off a street cop. His intensity in facial experessions as well. He doesn’t contort his face and strain to force the feeling it just…happens. Guy was amazing. He will be missed

The irony of @tebriel69 mentioning Star Trek's Picard as well earlier in this thread isn't lost on me. He could have done it and done it well

Even the sun goes down heroes eventually die
Horoscopes often lie and sometimes, "Y"
Nothin' is for sure, nothin' is for certain and nothin' lasts forever
But until they close the curtain...

This fucked me up. I watched the resident evil tv show on Netflix based on his acting skills from other shows and movies. The brother was talented. May he R.I.P.

It’s hard to tell with us because our skin doesn’t crack. Underneath the skin and inside our bodies could tell a different story about our heart condition, cholesterol level, etc.

RIP to Lance
