I don' get it. Biggie was aiiight. He only had 1 album when he lived, a few after he died. His topic matters were basically pussy, money, killing and getting high. Not trying to hate but why celebrate him like his catalog, body of work, rap / cultural influence was on some next level shit? Most of biggies rap peers have exceeded him in all the categories I mentioned. and fuck it, ima say it... it was a dumb ass move taking his ass out to cali when that east/west coast shit was poppin off. Not hating, just don't understand the desire to elevate Biggie in death when in life, he was ok with a nice buzz. As far as Lil Cease and Kim? If they ain't talking about biggie, they don't have shit to say. Clearly their still keeping themselves attached to biggies shine to stay relevant.

There’s a reason well respected emcees, past and present, put Big on that pedestal. It’s not a coincidence or by happenstance.

It’s more than likely something you’re not meant to understand and appreciate and that’s cool. Just keep it moving and let those who do respect and understand it, do just that.

Biggie was dope, no ifs or ands. He was a clever lyricist, fun to listen to, likable for a so-called gangsta, and his voice and cadence were original and dope. He was the air apparent of fat dudes after Heavy D and before a Fat Joe or Pun. He never got a chance to drop a whack album, similar to Eddie Murphy never dropping a whack special. The timing was (for a lack of better words) right. Give the man his props or forever be a hater.

He actually has plenty of music and wrote for others. His second album was released right after he passed away it's not like he didn't complete it. You sound like a hating ass nigga if you can't see his brilliance it might be you that's the problem.

Sounds like a bunch of east coast cats. My point stands. I'm a fan of hip hop but biggie to ME ain't all that. I'm sorry his first album was dope but we never got a chance to hear his range. His top 5 songs came from his 1st album and the 5th is 2nd album. His peers that ride for him, mainly are NY cats but whose kidding who. Just because you disagree don't make me a hata. Niggas are quick to call another nigga a hata but never fucking define hating? Just because my opinion differs from yours don't make me a hater. It means I have a opinion different that yours. I like biggie but he don't deserve the mad props he's given based off his body of work. Period, point blank. Now if any one of you clowns want to debate "catalog, sales, cultural relevance outside of hip hop", direct influence on both hip hop and non hip hop matters, expanse of song material", lets' go. Other than that, save the bs, I stand by my original comments.

bullshit. Biggie got elevate as the East coast GOAT as a direct response to the west coast elevating Tupac as the West coast GOAT. I remember the state of hip hop after PAC died and the west coast kept showing Pac love, the east coast cats felt they had to elevate Biggie. It's like giving our boy props even though you know he ain't got it in him. I never said Biggie was wack, my point was this outsize props after death did not match his work while he lived. Cats are quick to crown someone the GOAT when their body of work is way too short to make a true comparison. Biggie fits into that category.

I disagree with this. Biggie was sick with it, but Ready To Die was overrated. That's why most of the album had to be remixed. It wasn't his rhymes, it was the production. Was he "ahead of his time"? No. Was he ill with the bars? HELL YEAH!
Now this I can get with. Your sharing your opinion without beefing about something that was never said. Biggie had bars I won't debate but did he have range? No I don't think so. in my opinion, you can summarize biggie down to "pussy, drugs, partying...guns". Not much range in that. I like these but need more range from an artist for me to take them seriously.

I think if he lived long enough, we would've gotten the range you speak of. How you feel about Bigs, is how I felt about Jay Z. Dope, but limited subject wise. Hov's last album is one of my favorites, because it was introspective.

I agree with this guy.

Born and raised New Yawker and I honestly have never understood the reverence that Biggie gets. There are rappers like Kool G Rap and Grand Poohbah who were much better in flow and barz who also wrote for other artists that don't even get a mention. But I get that certain artists just hit the right note at the right time and somehow it's exactly what the public wanted at that moment.

Everybody likes what they like so I could care less, just an observation. And I was there when Rap was born. IMO Chuck D is the GOAT.

It's one of those things where you hear something new, and it blows your mind. That's why it's hard to compare eras. JDL from Cold Crush was THE man to me, and then I heard "Rap's New Language" by The Treacherous 3 and Spoonie, and that fucked me up. And then I heard DLB & Tito on "Fearless Freestyle" by the Fearless Four. That fucked me up! And then I heard Rakim and Kane, and THAT fucked me up, and so on.
