Shocked? Lil Wayne Declares JAY-Z To Be The G.O.A.T.

Lil-Wayne-827x620.jpg

Though Lil Wayne declared himself “The Best Rapper Alive” in 2005 with the release Tha Carter II, which turned into a short-lived bout with JAY-Z, using a year-old promotional clip for his signature Bumbu rum he crown’s Hov with the greatest of all-time title.

“Who’s the GOAT to you? I got Jay!” Wayne captioned on the clip.

By this time, it shouldn’t be a surprise that Lil Wayne hails Jigga as the greatest. The love and respect the two Carters share between each other is evident.

Aside from helping Weezy settle his $14 million tax debt in March, the Roc Nation founder previously credited Wayne for lighting the fire under him that resulted in his No. 1 album The Blueprint 3 in 2009. At one point, the Brooklyn rap mogul made an attempt to sign him to Roc-A-Fella Records for $175,000.

The loving camaraderie didn’t come without incident, however. Lil Wayne always showed major love to JAY-Z because that is hisfavorite rapper. When JAY announced his retirement following the release of 2003’s The Black Album, the Young Money CEO quickly assumed the best role with his song “Best Rapper Alive.” On his 2006 comeback album Kingdom Come, JAY took issue with Weezy’s proclamation on the track “Trouble.”

Shortly after Kingdom Come‘s release, Wayne did an interview with Complex saying he was better than JAY-Z.

“I don’t like what he’s saying about how he had to come back because Hip Hop’s dead and we need him,” Lil Tunechi said in the interview with Complex. “What the fuck do you mean? If anything it’s reborn, so he’s probably having a problem with that. You left on a good note, and all of the artists were saying, ‘Yo, this is JAY’s house. He’s the best.’ Now he comes back and still thinks it’s his house. It’s not your house anymore, and I’m better than you.”

During the summer of 2007, Hov further took shots at Weezy on T.I.’s “Watch What You Say To Me.” By the end of the year, Wayne apologized and the two seemingly made amends when the New Orleans bred rapper appeared on “Hello Brooklyn 2.0” off American Gangster.

Likewise, upon Wayne’s delivery of his highly-anticipated album Tha Carter III, fans were pleased with their “Mr. Carter” collaboration. Jay even made his own rendition of “A Milli” titled “A Billi.”

Now, Lil Wayne considers his idol JAY-Z to be a close friend.

Currently, Tunechi is prepping for the release of his forthcoming album Funeral now that the world finally has Tha Carter V.

If pressed I'll say Jay.

He's actually a good emcee who has sold a ton of records , had the longest string of hits, still gets respect on the mic as well, and had grown as a man and a businessman outside the booth.

Longevity, chart success, critical acclaim , business acumen, all that adds up. Even if he isn't my personal favorite rapper, he's exceeded my other favorites in other categories.

And he literally owns a streaming platform, which is the new distribution. Game over

Not gonna call him them the goat because he use to spit alot of biggie lines lol. I'll give him credit for great longevity in the game and putting out quality music for such a long period.

It's Jay-Z hands down... Not even a competition.. And I'm not saying he's necessarily the best in every area of entertainment /rap... He does well enough in every statistical category you could invent as a metric for this rap shit. And he did it without too much of a road map from others. But most people you'd name after him are using his blueprint for their success

Right, because there is huge difference between someone being your favorite MC and someone being the best MC.

That favorite part clouds people's opinion so I don't even want to argue with them. Plus each generation there are new favorites and new all-time greats. It's like kids who think Lebron is better than MJ, they don't get it & peeps can say the same to me about Bill Russell. It's never ending.

Jay has had the best rap career hands down. I don't know if he's the G.O.A.T. mc, but he belongs in any objective conversation.

Selling records and success is more about promotion and timing, Jay been overrated or overhyped from Day 1. If you have noticed, you do not have be a skilled MC to sell records or even get rich in the music business. All you need a nice gimmick, and weak audience that can be easily influenced.

Me and my boys been talking about how Jay Z been able to get over on people since his second album, 20 years later shit is still funny, the fucking Pied Piper.

I agree with a lot of that. At the same time, it aint like he's not nice on the mic.

He is nice, like a whole lot other MC's that came before him and after him.

And those that came before and after haven't been able to turn it into what he turned it into. That's all I was saying. I make the distinction between career and skill. I think a lot of cats conflate the two. Career wise, no question he's the best to ever do it. Skills wise....I think he's earned a place in the conversation but I won't commit further than that.

Jay came in when with a good marketing scheme, he took advantage of a lot of political shit, but he aged out now. There will be young guns who will come into the game with a better gimmick, take advantage of the new social media and streaming platforms, and will make 2 or 3 times more money than him through a career.

I think Eminem has sold more albums than Jay Z, and I think Diddy and Dr. Dre have made more money than Jay Z as rappers/producers.

Lil Wayne is entitled to his opinion, but he had a good career for some of the same reasons Jay Z had a good career, and it ain't got shit to do with quality of content.

Dre made the bulk of his money through the Beats venture, Diddy made a lot of his money through non music ventures as well....and those guys are high in the rankings for best career as well. Em is a phenom. The mere fact that you're mentioning these titans of the industry as comparisons kinda solidifies my point. Good marketing schemes are something every rapper should strive for, other wise, post your shit on SoundCloud for free. I dont understand why you're acting like that's a negative. And let's be honest.....finding a good marketing scheme for a kinda unassuming cat like Jay took some crafting. Yeah, he's aged....but not aged out. When he drops something new, it's still an event. The man owns his own distribution platform. Every young gun that takes advantage of social media and streaming platforms will be reading from the Sean Carter manual. And I'm saying all of this not even being his biggest fan. I just give props where they're due. And again.....this is his career acumen. As far as G.O.A.T. mc, those are very different metrics but I think his body of work on the mic earns him a place in the conversation.

I look at Jay Z, the same way I look at Coach K. Coach K got over 1000 wins, 5 national championships. He has probably made more money than any college coach, and has made Duke the most watched college basketball team, but when you look beneath the surface, he is not the best coach of all time.

Coach K and Jay Z had perfect timing, great marketing schemes and slick gimmicks, took advantage of the politics in their industries, and use their power to influence shallow people into think they are greater than they really are.

Jay Z simply never puts the best product on the streets, just good at marketing to the sheep.
